  4. NOTES ON USING APPLICATIONS WITH MS-DOS VERSION 5.0

  7. This document provides important information not included in
  8. the Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference or in online
  9. Help.
  10.  
  11. Look through the following table of contents to determine
  12. whether your application is included.

  60. CAUTION: The Intel Above Board installation program that
  61.          shipped before May 1989 tests extended memory in a
  62.          way that can corrupt extended memory.
  63.  
  64. Before using an Above Board installation program prior to
  65. May 1989, make sure you haven't loaded software such as
  66. SMARTDrive or RAMDrive that uses extended memory.  After the
  67. Above Board has been installed, other software using
  68. extended memory is unaffected.

  70. 2. Amload
  71. ---------
  72. If you can't use the Apricot Computer Amload program,
  73. use the following LOADFIX command:
  74.  
  75.    LOADFIX amload.exe
  76.  
  77. For information about the LOADFIX command, see the section
  78. "You receive the 'Packed file corrupt' message" in Chapter 4
  79. of Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started.
  80.  
  81. 3. AutoCAD release 10
  82. ---------------------
  83. To run AutoCAD release 10 for MS-DOS, contact Autodesk for a
  84. patch file. No patch is needed for AutoCAD386.
  85.  
  86. 4. AUTORUN.EXE
  87. --------------
  88. If you can't use Mountain Network Solutions AUTORUN.EXE, a
  89. tape-drive backup program, contact your vendor for an
  90. upgrade.
  91.  
  92. 5. CodeView
  93. -----------
  94. CAUTION: Using versions 3.0 to 3.13 of the CodeView CV.EXE
  95. file may cause data loss if your system has a 80386 memory
  96. manager (such as EMM386.EXE) and device drivers or programs
  97. that use extended memory. To determine which version you
  98. have, type CV.EXE at the command prompt.
  99.  
  100. To start CodeView versions 3.0 to 3.13 safely, use the
  101. CV.COM file included with MS-DOS 5.0, and HIMEM.SYS version
  102. 2.77 or later.
  103.  
  104. To use the CV.COM file included with MS-DOS 5.0, copy it
  105. from Setup Disk 2 (5.25-inch disks) or Disk 3 (3.5-inch
  106. disks). Copy it to the directory that contains your CV.EXE
  107. file.
  108.  
  109. This problem has been fixed in CodeView version 3.14. Call
  110. Microsoft C Support to get this version.
  111.  
  112. 6. Easel 6.0
  113. ------------
  114. Interactive Images Easel 6.0 is incompatible with the
  115. DOS=HIGH and EMM386 commands. Contact your vendor for an
  116. update.
  117.  
  118. 7. Fastback
  119. -----------
  120. If you have a version of Fifth Generation Systems Fastback
  121. earlier than 3.0, you must use the LOADFIX command before
  122. running Fastback or the Fastback installation program. Type
  123. the following:
  124.  
  125. LOADFIX FB.EXE
  126.  
  127. or
  128.  
  129. LOADFIX FBINSTAL.EXE
  130.  
  131. For information about the LOADFIX command, see the section
  132. "You receive the 'Packed file corrupt' message" in Chapter 4
  133. of Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started.

  135. 8. GeoWorks
  136. -----------
  137. If you have a version of GeoWorks (PC/GEOS) earlier than
  138. 1.2, use the SETVER command to report version number 4.01 to
  139. the GEOS.EXE file. Type the following:
  140.  
  141. SETVER GEOS.EXE 4.01
  142.  
  143. Do not run the installation program for GeoWorks Ensemble
  144. when MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper is active.
  145.  
  146. Use the Exclusive Tasking option when running GeoWorks
  147. Ensemble with Windows.
  148.  
  149. 9. LINK.EXE: Unexpected Error Messages
  150. --------------------------------------
  151. If you get unexpected error messages while linking programs,
  152. make sure you don't have an old version of LINK.EXE in your
  153. DOS directory or path.
  154.  
  155. LINK.EXE is not supplied with MS-DOS 5.0.
  156.  
  157. 10. Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.0
  158. ---------------------------
  159. For information about Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.0, see the
  160. section "Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.1 won't start" in Chapter 4
  161. of Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started. This information also
  162. applies to Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.0.

  164. 11. Manifest
  165. -----------
  166. Versions 1.01 and later of Quarterdeck Manifest are
  167. compatible with MS-DOS 5.0. If you have a version earlier
  168. than 1.01, contact your vendor for an upgrade.
  169.  
  170. 12. Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions
  171. -------------------------------
  172. Use MSCDEX.EXE version 2.20 or later with MS-DOS 5.0. If you
  173. have an earlier version, contact your vendor for an upgrade.
  174.  
  175. 13. Paintbrush 2.0
  176. ------------------
  177. If you have an EGA monitor and want to run Microsoft or
  178. ZSoft Paintbrush 2.0, you must remove the DEVICE=EGA.SYS
  179. command from your CONFIG.SYS file. After removing the
  180. command, you may have difficulty with screen swapping when
  181. using Task Swapper in MS-DOS Shell.

  183. 14. Paradox 3.5
  184. ---------------
  185. For information about Paradox version 3.5, see the section
  186. "Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.1 won't start" in Chapter 4 of
  187. Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started. This information also
  188. applies to Paradox 3.5.
  189.  
  190. 15. PC-Kwik Disk Accelerator
  191. ----------------------------
  192. Do not load versions of Multisoft PC-Kwik Disk Accelerator
  193. earlier than 2.0 into the upper memory area.
  194.  
  195. 16. PeachTree Complete III Single-User Version
  196. ----------------------------------------------
  197. If you are using the single-user version of PeachTree
  198. Complete III (batch 01 through batch 13), contact PeachTree
  199. for an update.
  200.  
  201. There is no compatibility problem with the network version.
  202.  
  203. 17. Pklite
  204. ----------
  205. Do not use Pklite to pack device drivers.
  206.  
  207. If you have a PC-Kwik cache on your system, and you can't
  208. run a packed program, do one of the following:
  209.    * Use the LOADFIX command to start the program.
  210.    * Run MS-DOS 5.0 in conventional memory.
  211.    * Run a version of the program that was not packed with
  212.      Pklite.
  213.    * Disable asynchronous reads on the PC-Kwik cache.
  214.

  218.  
  219. 18. ProKey Plus
  220. ---------------
  221. If you have problems using a version of RoseSoft ProKey Plus
  222. earlier than 5.0, contact your vendor for an upgrade.
  223.  
  224. ProKey Plus is incompatible with MS-DOS Editor and QBasic.
  225.  
  226. 19. Sidekick 2.0
  227. ----------------
  228. If you are running MS-DOS 5.0 in the high memory area, use
  229. the following LOADFIX command to start Borland Sidekick 2.0:
  230.  
  231.     LOADFIX sk2.exe
  232.  
  233. For information about the LOADFIX command, see the section
  234. "You receive the 'Packed file corrupt' message" in Chapter 4
  235. of Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started.
  236.  
  237. 20. Soft-ICE
  238. ------------
  239. When using Nu-Mega Soft-ICE, load it before loading other
  240. drivers. Otherwise, you may lose data stored in extended
  241. memory by drivers such as SMARTDrive.
  242.  
  243. 21. Software Carousel
  244. ---------------------
  245. Software Carousel 5.01 is compatible with MS-DOS 5.0.
  246. If you have an earlier version, contact SoftLogic Solutions
  247. for an update.
  248.  
  249. If you installed HIMEMSLS.SYS, remove the
  250. DEVICE=HIMEMSLS.SYS command from your CONFIG.SYS after
  251. running MS-DOS 5.0 Setup.
  252.  
  253. To use DOSKEY, load it after you load Software Carousel into
  254. memory.
  255.  
  256. 22. Task Swapper and Asynchronous I/O
  257. -------------------------------------
  258. Some programs that perform asynchronous communications are
  259. incompatible with MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper. Terminal-
  260. emulation software (such as SmartCom and Procomm Plus) and
  261. server/client software (such as Laplink and Blast) are
  262. asynchronous communications programs. If you can't use an
  263. asynchronous program with Task Swapper, contact your vendor
  264. for more information, or disable Task Swapper.
  265.  
  266. 23. Turbo Debugger 386
  267. ----------------------
  268. The Borland Turbo Debugger 386 is configuration-dependent
  269. and must be reinstalled after you upgrade to MS-DOS 5.0.
  270.  
  271. 24. Ventura Publisher
  272. ---------------------
  273. If you can't start Ventura Publisher, make sure your Ventura
  274. Publisher directory is within the first 70 characters of the
  275. PATH command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  276.  
  277. 25. WordPerfect WPINFO.EXE 5.1
  278. ------------------------------
  279. Some versions of the WPINFO.EXE file included with
  280. WordPerfect 5.1 are incompatible with MS-DOS 5.0. Contact
  281. your vendor for more information.

  283. 26. WordPerfect Office 3.0
  284. --------------------------
  285. Some versions of WordPerfect Office 3.0 are incompatible
  286. with MS-DOS 5.0. Contact your vendor for more information.
  287.  
  288. 27. XTreeNet
  289. ------------
  290. To use XTreeNet with MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper, select the
  291. Prevent Program Switch option in the MS-DOS Shell Advanced
  292. dialog box. For more information about specifying advanced
  293. properties, see Chapter 8 of the Microsoft MS-DOS User's
  294. Guide and Reference.
