  1. AUTODESK MECHANICAL DIVISION SHIPS FIRST PRODUCTS

  3. DesignExpert and ManufacturingExpert Now Available in Special Bundled
  4. Offer With AutoCAD

  6. Sausalito, CA - February 16, 1993 - Autodesk today announced that
  7. Autodesk DesignExpert and Autodesk ManufacturingExpert for the Sun
  8. SPARCstation, the first two mechanical design software products to be
  9. released by its new Novi, Michigan-based Mechanical Division, are now
  10. available for customers in the United States, Canada, and Latin
  11. America.  Versions for DOS and UNIX platforms will also be made
  12. available by the end of April 1993, according to Autodesk officials.

  14. Offered as two separate bundled packages, DesignExpert and
  15. ManufacturingExpert solve difficult modeling and manufacturing problems
  16. and are broadly applicable across multiple industry segments.  Included
  17. in both packages is AutoSurf, an advanced CAD/CAM software product that
  18. enables customers to design highly complex parts in 3D using precise
  19. NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline)-based technology.  Together,
  20. these product bundles provide a total solution for both 2D and 3D
  21. design and detailing, freeform surface modeling, and 2- through 5-axis
  22. NC (Numerical Control).

  24. "These are very competitive CAD/CAM design and manufacturing tools for
  25. the MCAD market, and they are available now, at a best-value position,"
  26. said Len Rand, vice president of Autodesk's Design Automation Group. 
  27. "They represent a significant milestone in our commitment to make
  28. high-end mechanical design and engineering technology available to
  29. current CAD customers.  More importantly, by introducing these
  30. products, we are extending the Autodesk family of products to make it
  31. more responsive to today's challenging and rigorous mechanical design
  32. and manufacturing environment."

  34. "With these new products, mechanical designers, engineers, drafters,
  35. and NC programmers can create and produce the most complex of today's
  36. components," said Ken Spenser, general manager of the Autodesk
  37. Mechanical Division.  "The real-world challenge is to tightly integrate
  38. the design and manufacturing function to decrease overall time to
  39. market and simultaneously increase quality and make this technology
  40. available to everyone.  What DesignExpert and ManufacturingExpert offer
  41. is such an integrated approach.  Users can create manufacturable
  42. geometry based on the extensive knowledge of manufacturing processes
  43. and technologies that we in the Autodesk Mechanical Division bring to
  44. this market."

  46. Along with AutoSurf, the DesignExpert bundle also includes AutoCAD
  47. Release 12 and the AutoCAD IGES Translator.  The Translator, which is
  48. free (a US$1,200 value), is a production-worthy tool that allows
  49. customers to work cooperatively with customers and suppliers and
  50. exchange information across a variety of systems.

  52. Included in the ManufacturingExpert package is AutoSurf and AutoMill,
  53. an NC application that enables customers to machine parts using
  54. sophisticated 2- to 5-axis NC technology and that also includes the
  55. generic NC postprocessing package PostMaster.  Also included in this
  56. product bundle are AutoCAD Release 12, the AutoCAD IGES Translator, and
  57. MILLMASTER.  MILLMASTER, which is free (a US$4,995 value), provides
  58. off-hours, gouge-free, multi-surface machining.

  60. Among the new features common to both products are NURBS-based surface
  61. mathematics, offered in a simplified Motif/OpenLook-compliant user
  62. interface, automatic surface trimming, dynamic surface editing,
  63. improved 3D working coordinate systems, and improved tutorials and
  64. documentation.  Written in C++, both products are extremely portable
  65. and extensible.  As well as IGES and DXF, both product bundles also
  66. support a wide spectrum of other CAD data translation facilities,
  67. including several proprietary formats.

  71. The English-language version of both these new products can be obtained
  72. through Authorized Autodesk Dealers and Distributors.  The suggested
  73. retail price of the DesignExpert bundle is US$7,750.  The suggested
  74. retail price of the ManufacturingExpert bundle is US$13,750.  For a
  75. limited time through the summer, both product bundles will be available
  76. at special introductory prices of US$7,000 and US$13,000, respectively.

  82. For both packages, Autodesk will also be offering a software update
  83. service.  Customers who subscribe to this service will be entitled to
  84. an automatic upgrade to the next release, in which the AutoSurf and
  85. AutoMill components of the two packages will be more closely integrated
  86. into the Autodesk product family.  (Upward file compatibility with the
  87. current product bundles will be assured in this next release.)
