AUTODESK MECHANICAL DIVISION SHIPS FIRST PRODUCTS
DesignExpert and ManufacturingExpert Now Available in Special Bundled
Offer With AutoCAD
Sausalito, CA - February 16, 1993 - Autodesk today announced that
Autodesk DesignExpert and Autodesk ManufacturingExpert for the Sun
SPARCstation, the first two mechanical design software products to be
released by its new Novi, Michigan-based Mechanical Division, are now
available for customers in the United States, Canada, and Latin
America. Versions for DOS and UNIX platforms will also be made
available by the end of April 1993, according to Autodesk officials.
Offered as two separate bundled packages, DesignExpert and
ManufacturingExpert solve difficult modeling and manufacturing problems
and are broadly applicable across multiple industry segments. Included
in both packages is AutoSurf, an advanced CAD/CAM software product that
enables customers to design highly complex parts in 3D using precise
NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline)-based technology. Together,
these product bundles provide a total solution for both 2D and 3D
design and detailing, freeform surface modeling, and 2- through 5-axis
NC (Numerical Control).
"These are very competitive CAD/CAM design and manufacturing tools for
the MCAD market, and they are available now, at a best-value position,"
said Len Rand, vice president of Autodesk's Design Automation Group.
"They represent a significant milestone in our commitment to make
high-end mechanical design and engineering technology available to
current CAD customers. More importantly, by introducing these
products, we are extending the Autodesk family of products to make it
more responsive to today's challenging and rigorous mechanical design
and manufacturing environment."
"With these new products, mechanical designers, engineers, drafters,
and NC programmers can create and produce the most complex of today's
components," said Ken Spenser, general manager of the Autodesk
Mechanical Division. "The real-world challenge is to tightly integrate
the design and manufacturing function to decrease overall time to
market and simultaneously increase quality and make this technology
available to everyone. What DesignExpert and ManufacturingExpert offer
is such an integrated approach. Users can create manufacturable
geometry based on the extensive knowledge of manufacturing processes
and technologies that we in the Autodesk Mechanical Division bring to
this market."
Along with AutoSurf, the DesignExpert bundle also includes AutoCAD
Release 12 and the AutoCAD IGES Translator. The Translator, which is
free (a US$1,200 value), is a production-worthy tool that allows
customers to work cooperatively with customers and suppliers and
exchange information across a variety of systems.
Included in the ManufacturingExpert package is AutoSurf and AutoMill,
an NC application that enables customers to machine parts using
sophisticated 2- to 5-axis NC technology and that also includes the
generic NC postprocessing package PostMaster. Also included in this
product bundle are AutoCAD Release 12, the AutoCAD IGES Translator, and
MILLMASTER. MILLMASTER, which is free (a US$4,995 value), provides
off-hours, gouge-free, multi-surface machining.
Among the new features common to both products are NURBS-based surface
mathematics, offered in a simplified Motif/OpenLook-compliant user
interface, automatic surface trimming, dynamic surface editing,
improved 3D working coordinate systems, and improved tutorials and
documentation. Written in C++, both products are extremely portable
and extensible. As well as IGES and DXF, both product bundles also
support a wide spectrum of other CAD data translation facilities,
including several proprietary formats.
Special Pricing
The English-language version of both these new products can be obtained
through Authorized Autodesk Dealers and Distributors. The suggested
retail price of the DesignExpert bundle is US$7,750. The suggested
retail price of the ManufacturingExpert bundle is US$13,750. For a
limited time through the summer, both product bundles will be available
at special introductory prices of US$7,000 and US$13,000, respectively.
Educational and international (including Canadian) prices for Autodesk
products and upgrades may vary. To obtain the name of the nearest
Authorized AutoCAD Dealer in the United States, call 800-964-6432. For
international prices, please contact an Autodesk office.
For both packages, Autodesk will also be offering a software update
service. Customers who subscribe to this service will be entitled to
an automatic upgrade to the next release, in which the AutoSurf and
AutoMill components of the two packages will be more closely integrated
into the Autodesk product family. (Upward file compatibility with the
current product bundles will be assured in this next release.)
