  19.      WHY?
  20.  
  21.      There is a massive force of "ANTIHOSTILE" software on the market.
  22.      Most of the programs like to call themselves "ANTIVIRUS". This is
  23.      absurd and deceptive  since the viral threat is only a small part
  24.      of the entire dangerous array - including your own clumsiness. To
  25.      help aid the concerned user,  who might otherwise throw his hands
  26.      up in despair and ultimately choose to avoid the issue, this list
  27.      of software, will, we hope, be of use.
  28.  
  29.      This list is neither comprehensive nor complete, but from time to
  30.      time we hope to add to it.  What it will do is define those areas
  31.      of system protection that must be addressed.  Then the individual
  32.      software packages can be rated on their overall abilities to save
  33.      a computer under assault.
  34.  
  35.      We will assume, for the purpose of this evaluation,  the majority
  36.      of computer users do NOT want to make a career out of yet another
  37.      software package.  If ten separate jobs are needed to protect ten
  38.      separate system areas, then the jobs will be rated separately and
  39.      the overall performance of each will be LOW.   A software package
  40.      that combines many ANTIHOSTILE functions with as little interven-
  41.      tion as possible for the user, will likely receive a high rating.

  45.      WHAT?
  46.      
  47.      These are the areas of your system that must be protected:
  48.  
  49.      1. Master Boot Record. This represents 4% of the system (in terms
  50.      of importance and proneness to attack.) Some software will "scan"
  51.      for old virus signatures, but finding none, they will report that
  52.      "all is well." The surest protection is a FULL COPY of the MBR.
  53.  
  54.      2. The DOS or System Boot Record.  This also represents 4% of the
  55.      system's significance and attackability.
  56.  
  57.      3. The File Allocation Tables (2 copies) are frequently assaulted
  58.      by Trojans.  The idea is that by scrambling the contents, you can
  59.      no longer locate the files.   The ideal solution is an up-to-date
  60.      copy which can then be restored. The problem is that the FAT will
  61.      constantly change as new files are added, deleted, or updated.  A
  62.      15% weight is placed on the importance of the FATs because of the
  63.      many Trojans that have historically attacked it.
  64.  
  65.      4.  The hidden System Files  (IBMBIO.COM and IBMDOS.COM, but also
  66.      known by other names) have an approximate 3% significance rating.
  67.  
  68.      5.  More commonly assaulted, especially by virii, is COMMAND.COM.
  69.      This is why this single file's importance gives it a 15% rating.
  70.  
  71.      6.  Next are the common executable files - files with extensions
  72.      COM and EXE. Since these are the most prolific targets of virii,
  73.      their significance is weighted at a 40% rating.
  74.  
  75.      7.  General path and file structures rate 4% and 5% respectively.
  76.  
  77.      8.  Last is System Memory.  Viruses that have taken over a system
  78.      can sometimes be detected in the active RAM, rating 10%.

  82.      HOW?
  83.  
  84.      The following codes are used in discussing the system areas:
  85.  
  86.           B=Backup    C=checksum    S=Scan   R=Restore   X=Clean
  87.  
  88.  
  89.      BACKUP is the ability of the software to have access to a total
  90.      copy of the drive area.  By comparing the area byte-for-byte, a
  91.      program can accurately determine data error or infection.
  92.  
  93.      RESTORE is the ability to recover the original system area from
  94.      a backed up copy.
  95.  
  96.      CHECKSUM is the act of performing calculations, not necessarily
  97.      "sums", on the contents of a drive area (BOOT, FAT, file),  and
  98.      storing the results for comparison purposes.  If the result has
  99.      varied the next time the calculation is performed, the area has
  100.      changed (either by user update or by contamination.)
  101.  
  102.      SCANNING is a process of comparing system files and memory to a
  103.      set of virus "signatures" (strings of hexadecimal code detected
  104.      in known viruses).   The trick is to detect only the virus, but
  105.      because of the imperfect nature of this technique, false alarms
  106.      can occur when a string, which has been extracted from a virus,
  107.      has also been found to reside in a normal and safe file.   This
  108.      happened recently when an earlier version of a major Anti-Virus
  109.      product (Norton Anti-Virus 2.0) detected a string for the Malta
  110.      Aboeba virus inside a major archiving utility (PKUNZIP.EXE).
  111.  
  112.      CLEANUP is the ability of a program to remove hostile code from
  113.      an infected original. This is not always a successful operation
  114.      because cleaning up is usually based on static assumptions. The
  115.      hostile code will not always contaminate its victim in fashions
  116.      that are predictable.  The ideal solution is to "start over" by
  117.      erasing the contaminated area and restoring the original.
