This file documents the upgrade procedure for users running a previous
version of 4OS2 and upgrading to version 1.11. This information was
inadvertently left out of the 4OS2 version 1.11 README.DOC file.
Upgrading from a Previous Version of 4OS2
-----------------------------------------
If you are already running 4OS2 1.0 or 1.1, use this method to install
4OS2 version 1.11. (If you are installing 4OS2 for the first time, you
can ignore these instructions.)
PLEASE NOTE: This procedure involves modifications to your
CONFIG.SYS file. An error during such modifications can prevent
your system from booting. While this is extremely rare under
OS/2, it is nevertheless a good idea to make sure your original
OS/2 floppy disks are available as a backup whenever you modify
CONFIG.SYS (whether for 4OS2 or any other reason).
(1) Extract all of the files from the 4OS216.ZIP or 4OS232.ZIP file
to a new 4OS2 directory on your hard disk. Do NOT use the same
directory you used for your previous version of 4OS2. If you are
running OS/2 1.x, or the original release of OS/2 2.0 without the
"Service Pack" (IBM CSD XRx6055) installed, you MUST use the 16-bit
version of 4OS2 (4OS216.ZIP). If you are running OS/2 2.0 with the
Service Pack installed, or a later version of OS/2 (including OS/2
2.1), you can use the 32-bit version of 4OS2 (4OS232.ZIP).
(2) If you have a registered (purchased) copy of 4OS2, find your 4OS2
BRAND card. Change to your new 4OS2 directory and run the BRAND
program (BRAND.EXE). (If you don't have the 4OS2 BRAND.EXE on your
hard disk, you can install it from the original 4OS2 distribution
disks using the Extract Individual Files option from the 4OS2 INSTALL
main menu.) Answer the questions from BRAND based on the information
on your brand ID card -- be sure to enter the information EXACTLY as
it appears on the card. This will install your name and serial
number into 4OS2 version 1.11.

(3) Edit your CONFIG.SYS file with any ASCII file editor. Find the
lines beginning SET OS2_SHELL= and SET COMSPEC=, both of which should
refer to your old 4OS2 directory. Change these lines to refer to
your new 4OS2 directory.
(4) If your original 4OS2.INF file is in the 4OS2 directory, then the
name of that directory should be listed on the SET BOOKSHELF line in
CONFIG.SYS. Modify the SET BOOKSHELF line to address the new
directory rather than the old. (If you moved 4OS2.INF from the 4OS2
directory to another location on your BOOKSHELF path, you do not need
to modify the SET BOOKSHELF line. However you should move the new
4OS2.INF file to the same directory, so that the new help information
will be available when you start 4OS2 HELP.)
(5) If your original 4OS2H.MSG file is in the 4OS2 directory, then
the name of that directory should be listed on the SET DPATH line in
CONFIG.SYS. Modify the SET DPATH line to address the new directory
rather than the old. (If you moved 4OS2H.MSG from the 4OS2 directory
to another location on your DPATH, you do not need to modify the SET
DPATH line. However you should move the new 4OS2H.MSG file to the
same directory, so that the new help information will be available
when you ask for "/?" help.)
(6) If your 4OS2.INI file is in your old 4OS2 directory, move it to
the new directory. Use an ASCII editor to edit 4OS2.INI for any
changes in the new version of 4OS2 (see README.DOC for changes in
this version). If you were running the 4OS2-32 version 1.1 update,
you may have modified the HelpBook setting in 4OS2.INI to include the
"add-on" help for 4OS2-32. This is no longer necessary -- with
version 1.11, help information for the 16-bit and 32-bit versions of
4OS2 is fully integrated into 4OS2.INF. To remove this extra help
file, "4OS2-32" from the HelpBook= setting.
(7) Use the procedure described under "Installing 4OS2 Icons" in the
4OS2 README.DOC file to assign the appropriate icon in the new 4OS2
directory to each object on your desktop which uses a 4OS2 icon.
(8) If you created any objects on your desktop which refer explicitly
to 4OS2 files or programs, be sure to modify these objects to refer
to the new 4OS2 directory. (This is not necessary for normal 4OS2
session icons, which use "*" as the program name. It is only needed
if you manually created objects which contain explicit references to
the old 4OS2 directory.)
(9) Make any necessary adjustments to existing batch files, aliases,
desktop objects, etc. to make them compatible with or take advantage
of changes in 4OS2 version 1.11. The changes in 4OS2 version 1.11
are unlikely to require any changes elsewhere in your system, but
it's important that you check the change list in README.DOC to be
sure.

(10) Shut down and reboot your system so that the changes made above
take effect. If you wish you can then delete the files in your old
4OS2 directory.
If you wish, you can use a simpler method which does not involve
rebooting your system or modifying CONFIG.SYS, and allows you to
overwrite the old 4OS2 files with the new ones. This is not as
conservative a procedure as what's described above, but it is faster and
does not require as many modifications to system files or objects on
your desktop.
(1) Perform steps (1) and (2) in the first method above.
(2) If you are using the SHRALIAS program, start a 4OS2 session and
unload SHRALIAS with the command SHRALIAS /U. After SHRALIAS is
unloaded, close all 4OS2 sessions. (The reason you must unload
SHRALIAS and close 4OS2 sessions is that OS/2 will not allow you to
overwrite SHRALIAS.EXE or 4OS2.EXE if they are currently in use.)
(3) From a DOS session, MOVE the new 4OS2 files to overwrite the old
ones, using a command line like the following (adjust this for the
appropriate directory names on your system):
move \4os2111\*.* \4os2\
This example overwrites your original 4OS2 files in the \4OS2
directory with the new files from the \4OS2111 directory. If any
"access denied errors" occur during the MOVE command, you probably
did not shut down all 4OS2 sessions and unload SHRALIAS. Go back to
step (2) and try again to move the remaining files.
(4) If you chose to manually move the original 4OS2.INF file from its
default location in the 4OS2 directory to another location on your
BOOKSHELF path, be sure to move the new 4OS2.INF file to the same
directory, so that it will be available when you start 4OS2 HELP.
Similarly, if you chose to manually move the original 4OS2H.MSG file
from the 4OS2 directory to another location on your DPATH, be sure to
move the new 4OS2H.MSG to the same directory.
(5) If necessary, remove "4OS2-32" from your HelpBook setting, as
described in step (6) of the first method above.
(6) If you wish to update to the new 4OS2 icons, use the procedure
described under "Installing 4OS2 Icons" in the 4OS2 README.DOC file
to reassign the appropriate icon to each object on your desktop which
uses a 4OS2 icon. (If you don't take this step, the current icons
will remain associated with the 4OS2 objects on your desktop.)
(7) Make any necessary adjustments to your system as described in
step (9) of the first method above.

(8) Restart any 4OS2 sessions and they will now run 4OS2 version
1.11. Reload SHRALIAS if you unloaded it in step (2) above.
