I. Report on Vietnamese character encodings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Vietnamese Standards Working Group (Viet-Std Group) has completed
the design and testing of the 8-bit VIetnamese Standard Code for
Information Interchange (VISCII) and the 7-bit VIetnamese Quoted
Readable Specification (VIQR). (VIQR is a convention to write
Vietnamese in 7-bit ASCII.) These standards are published in
a report entitled:
Vietnamese Character Encoding Standardization Report:
VISCII and VIQR 1.1
by Viet-Std, September 1992
The report contains the following articles:
No. Article
--------------------------------------------------------------
1 Preface
2 Th▀ Ng÷ G╪i Quφ V╕ Trong Ngαnh ╨i«n Toßn
3 A Unified Framework for Vietnamese Information Processing
4 M╡t Khu⌠n Kh▒ Th»ng Nhñt Cho Vi«c X╪ L² Dµ Ki«n Vi«t Ngµ
5 Announcement of VISCII-Compliant Software Applications
A few remarks are in order. The second article is in Vietnamese; its
title means "Open letter to the computing community." The fourth
article is the Vietnamese version of the third article.
The entire document is currently available in 4 forms:
a) PostScript format
b) plain text in VISCII code
c) plain text in VIQR convention (ASCII code)
d) hard copy
The first three formats are in electronic form and can be retrieved
by anonymous ftp at sonygate.Sony.COM under the /tin/viet-std directory.
A) PostScript format: Please print these files on a PostScript printer
and bind them in the following order:
1. 1title.ps title page, copyright notice, and prefaces
2. 2engppr.ps Viet-Std specifications, in English
3. 3vnppr.ps Viet-Std specifications, in Vietnamese
4. 4trchl.ps TriChlor Software announcement title page
5. 5sftware.txt TEXT file of public-domain software listing
B) Plain VISCII text format: The entire report is in a single 8-bit
text file named report.tx8. The file can be viewed by a
VISCII-compliant editor such as
* On UNIX: vnelvis
* On DOS: vnelvis, butviet, or utilities such as "more,"
"less" or DOS word processors running under vietdos
* On MS-WINDOWS 3.1: MS-write, MS-word (assuming WINVNKEY was
already installed, select text and choose a Vietnamese font)
The file can be printed out:
* On Unix: vnpstext (PostScript printers)
* On DOS: vietdm (dot-matrix printers), vlaser 2a (laser printers),
vprint (both laser and dot-matrix printers)
C) Plain ASCII text format: The entire report is in a single file
named report.tx7. The file can be viewed by any text editor
because it consists of 7-bit ASCII characters only. It can be printed
on any printer that supports ASCII.
D) Hard copy: The entire report is bound together. If you want to obtain a
copy, please sending a note and a check for US$6.00 to cover the cost.
The user can print the whole report or just an article of it by
using an editor to split the file.
II. Vietnamese Software
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Public-domain, VISCII- and VIQR-compliant, Vietnamese software and
Vietnamese fonts are also available which can run on Unix, X-Windows,
DOS, and MS-Windows 3.1. A survey of these software products
is included in the report mentioned above. Currently, these
products satisfy almost all demands in editing, displaying, printing,
word processing, software development tools, software utilities.
Vietnamized TeX is also available.
All software can be retrieved by anonymous ftp at sonygate.Sony.COM
under tin/VN. Unix binaries are also available for various platforms
(e.g., SUN3, SUN4, DEC, RS/6000, etc.) by anonymous ftp at sonygate.Sony.COM
under tin/VN/UNIX/binaries. DOS and MS-Windows 3.1 software is also available
on 2 floppy disks (3.5" or 5.25" type) with setup and installation automated.
