  20.   - Non-farm payrolls increased by 106,000 in January, the Labor 
  21.     Department reported  Friday, to a seasonally adjusted total 
  22.     of 108,842,000.  Expectations were for an increase of 100,000-
  23.     125,000. In December, non-farm payrolls rose by 90,000.  They 
  24.     were initially reported as increasing by 64,000. The unemployment 
  25.     rate was 7.1%.  It had been 7.3% in December and was expected  
  26.     to remain at that level.  However, the decline in the unemployment  
  27.     rate was due in large part to a shrinking of the civilian labor  
  28.     force, to a seasonally adjusted total of 127,083,000 from 127,591,000  
  29.     in December.  Civilian employment fell to 118,071,000 from 118,311,000 
  30.     in December.  The average work week remained at 34.4 hours.  Average 
  31.     hourly earnings rose to $10.74 in January from $10.69 in December.                                   
  32.     Retail trade payrolls rose 69,000 in January, manufactufing  payrolls  
  33.     were up by 34,000 and service-producing payrolls, which includes retail 
  34.     trade, rose by 113,000.  However,  services payrolls fell by 19,000  in  
  35.     January and construction payrolls fell by 37,000.  All are seasonally 
  36.     adjusted.

  39.   - President Clinton Friday signed the family leave bill. The Senate 
  40.     passed the bill 71 to 27, and the House followed on a 247 to 152  
  41.     vote, just minutes before midnight. The law requires employers to 
  42.     give workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to deal with birth,  
  43.     adoption or a serious illness affecting themselves or members of 
  44.     their immediate families. Employers would have to maintain health  
  45.     insurance coverage.  The bill takes effect in six months.                     
  46.                                                                                 
  47.   - The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. said Friday that interest rates  
  48.     on fixed 30-year mortgages fell to an average 7.80 percent - their 
  49.     lowest level since June 1973 and down from 7.86 percent last week.                     
  50.     The group said the 15-year fixed rate fell to an average 7.29 percent, 
  51.     down from 7.37 percent last week and 7.51 percent two weeks ago.                    
  52.     One-year, adjustable-rate notes were unchanged at 5.06 percent.

  54.   - Consumer credit surged $2.46 billion in December.  Consumer credit         
  55.     rose by $1.08 billion in November.
