------- Message to "SAMPLE" version users -------
If you have received a version of LPE which prints the word
"SAMPLE" on your envelopes, you have received the demonstration
version of this commercial software. If you decide that you
would like to purchase this software, you may call our order
line (have your credit card nearby) or print the order form
and send it in to us. If you use the demonstration version to
print the envelope you mail to ETS, the word "SAMPLE" will not
appear when our company address is the destination address.

Pressing the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON
generally behaves exactly like pressing the ESCape key.
NOTE: The series of GRAY BARS located in the UPPER RIGHT of
the LPE MAIN SCREEN are called STATUS BARS. You may click your
LEFT MOUSE BUTTON inside any of these status bars
to change the current setting of that item.
ONLINE HELP: (The F1 key)

and will always display the appropriate information. Sometimes, while
viewing a HELP screen, you will need to press the PAGE DOWN key to
view the entire HELP text.
4
USING THE MENUS-------------------------------------------------------
THE MAIN MENU:
This MENU appears on the initial program screen,
and stays up during most of the program.
D - DESTINATION ADDRESS: Who the envelope is addressed to.
R - RETURN ADDRESS: Who the envelope is from. You are able to
choose from SIX different return addresses.
P - PRINT ENVELOPE(s): Select this option to PRINT an envelope,
test envelope, or add the current Destination Address to the MAIL
LIST. NOTE: LPE has the ability to print from the screen, or
to retrieve it's Destination Address from a MAIL LIST which you have
created.
M - MAIL LIST: Use this to Select, View, Tag or Delete addresses
in your MAIL LIST.
E - ENVELOPE SIZE: Use this to select from all of the common
envelope sizes, or create your own CUSTOM envelope size.
NOTE: CUSTOM SIZE is most commonly used for Greeting Cards:
ie: Birthday, Christmas cards.
N - NUMBER OF COPIES: Your Laser Printer can print from 1 to
99 copies of any envelope. Select the quantity here. One copy is the
default setting.
F - FONT SELECTION: You can choose from many different FONTS.
LPE can use DOWNLOADED SOFT FONTS or your printers' internal LANDSCAPE
FONTS. If you have any Landscape Soft Fonts used by other programs
( .SFL or .USL ), you may copy some of these to your LPE
directory and use them to print your envelopes.
S - SETUP OPTIONS: You may have up to TWENTY different
SETUPS which you have pre-programmed into LPE. Each Setup contains
the complete information needed by LPE to print using a particular
style which you have saved before.
2 - MENU TWO: First time LPE users should use this to tell the
program what kind of hardware is connected to their computer. Use
to change Printer type, LAN option, printer tray and feed. (Manual
or Automatic Feed)
C - CHANGE COLORS: You are welcome to change your Screen Colors.
LPE will remember your new colors each time you run the program.
5
MENU TWO (The SUB-MENU)
S - SET ADDRESS LOCATIONS: Graphically MOVE and PLACE all items
on your envelope. A MOUSE is required to move any items. Simply
click on any item, and drag it to the desired location
by using your MOUSE.
NOTE: If you are mailing pre-return-addressed reply mail,
and exchange the locations of the RETURN and DESTINATION address,
LPE will properly calculate the BARcode from the RETURN address. This
allows you to use your MAIL LIST file to insert RETURN addresses,
and keep your address as the DESTINATION address.
A - ATTENTION LINE: Add, Edit or Remove your attention line
using this menu item. NOTE: The Post Office automatic reading
equipment does NOT like your Attention Line below the ZIP CODE. Be
advised, and use this feature at your own risk.
X - .PCX FILE: LPE allows you to place a maximum of FOUR .PCX
(picture) files on your envelope. These are graphic images created
in your paint programs. LPE restricts you to BLACK and WHITE images
only. No images which have an un-compressed size greater than 65k
bytes are allowed. (this is about the size of a dollar bill) LPE comes
with several .PCX examples.
B - BARCODES: Use this menu to Enable or Disable the BARcode
and FIMcode features. You may also choose from THREE locations for
your BARcode. The BARcode placement is strictly controlled by the
Post Office, and no other locations are permitted by their rules.
T - TRAY SELECT: Allows you to select MANUAL (feed envelopes
by hand) or AUTOMATIC (envelopes feed automatically).
P - PRINTER TYPE: Some generic pictures of Laser Printers will
be drawn on the screen. Choose the picture which most closely matches
YOUR printer. One of these six choices WILL work with your printer.
If you have any doubts, try the TOP THREE first.
O - PRINTER PORT: Select from LPT1: LPT2: or LPT3:. This program
does not support the SERIAL PORTS. Your Laser Printer
must be connected to a PARALLEL PRINTER port.
L - SET LAN OPTIONS: If you are on a Local Area
Network, and sharing a Laser Printer with others, turn this
option ON. This forces LPE to re-download all fonts and pictures
immediately before printing each envelope.
P - PRINTER ALIGNMENT MENU: Please try this feature sometime
to visually check how far out of alignment your Laser Printer Paper
Feed path is. Follow the instructions on the printout, and LPE has
the ability to compensate for any mis-alignment. This is an optional
feature for the more advanced user!
C - CUSTOMER SUPPORT LINES: If you need to contact ETS Inc.
for any reason, our phone numbers are listed here.
6
The PRINT MENU
P - PRINT ENVELOPE NOW: This will print the currently showing
return and destination addresses to your envelope immediately.
A - ADD to MAIL LIST then PRINT: This is just like the above
feature, except that the destination address is also added to your
currently active MAIL LIST file.
D - ADD to MAIL LIST - do not PRINT: Adds the currently showing
destination address to the currently active MAIL LIST file.
E - PRINT ENTIRE MAIL LIST: The Destination Addresses will be
taken from your currently active MAIL LIST file. The Return Address
will be taken from the screen.
NOTE: If you are doing pre-addressed-reply mail, and have
manually exchanged the return and destination addresses,
(SET ADDRESS) your destination addresses will still come from
the MAIL LIST file, but you have now moved the destination address
where the return address used to be, creating reply mail.
The barcodes will be calculated correctly, do not worry.
T - PRINT TAGGED ONLY: Only MAIL LIST addresses which you have
manually TAGged will be printed.
F - PRINT FULL SIZE TEST SHEET: Prints a TEST envelope
to a full size sheet of paper with a thin border drawn around the
envelope edges. Please use this feature to check your setups before
ruining an expensive greeting card envelope!
S - PRINT A SAMPLE OF ALL FONTS: This will scan your LPE directory
and print all .SFL or .USL Landscape Soft Fonts found. If your
printer has less than 1MEG of memory, not all may print well.
The ENVELOPE SIZE MENU
1 - Select from the list of pre-set common envelope sizes. All of the
USA standard sizes, and a few EUROPEAN sizes are already programmed.
There is no standard Greeting Card size, so you may have to
occasionally program a CUSTOM size.
The CUSTOM ENVELOPE SIZE MENU
Please measure your envelope with a ruler. LPE will ask you the HEIGHT
and WIDTH of the envelope. Please use INCHES, not METRIC. You must
estimate to within the nearest ONE EIGHTH of an inch.
7
BASIC FEATURES OF LPE-------------------------------------------------
RETURN ADDRESS
From the MAIN MENU select R
Six return address boxes appear. Select the return address you wish
to edit from the six addresses you are shown.
DESTINATION ADDRESS
From the MAIN MENU select D
This allows you to enter the destination address which you want printed
on your envelope. When you are adding addresses to the MAIL LIST,
you are creating the address here.
PRINTING AN ENVELOPE
From the MAIN MENU select P
You will be shown a list of print options which are fairly completely
described. Choose the items you wish to print using this menu.
NOTE: We suggest that the first time printing with this
program that you select the OPTION F. Your envelope will print
on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper. Sometimes Laser Printers
don't print well on envelope folds or corners. This is the best
way to trouble shoot any printing problems you are having,
and to test the placement of your addresses and pictures
before printing an envelope.
SELECTING NUMBER OF COPIES
From the MAIN MENU select OPTION N
A Laser Printer can print up to 99 identical copies of your envelope.
The default is one copy, but you can enter any number up to
99 using this option.
SELECTING YOUR LASER PRINTER TYPE
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2
Then Select OPTION P
You will be shown a picture of six printers. Pick the picture which
most closely matches the way the envelopes go into your printer. Try
all three top selections if you have any doubts. ONE WILL work.
SELECTING THE PRINTER TRAY and FEED
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2
Then Select OPTION T - PRINTER TRAY AND FEED
There are two choices, AUTO and MANUAL feed. AUTO means that the printer
will AUTOMATICALLY feed the envelopes from the default tray. MANUAL
means that the printer will wait for you to insert each envelope by
hand before printing. If you are using an ENVELOPE TRAY, please select
that item. The ENVELOPE TRAY will always feed AUTOMATICALLY.
SELECTING THE PRINTER PORT
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2
Then Select OPTION O - PRINTER PORT
There are three choices in this menu: LPT1 LPT2 and LPT3. If you are
not sure, select LPT1 first. LPE will not work on SERIAL ports.
8
ADVANCED FEATURES-----------------------------------------------------
CHANGING THE FONTS
From the MAIN MENU select OPTION F (FONT SELECTION)
You have many choices here. You have the ability to use a different
font for the FIRST (top) LINE in both the return and destination address.
Example: Your company name can be printed in a larger font than the
street, city, state and ZIP code lines. A different font may also
be selected for the Attention line.
LPE has the ability to use:
Downloadable Soft Fonts from the hard disk
All of the Downloadable Soft Fonts you wish to use must be located
in the same directory as the LPE program. LPE will show you each font
visually to make the selection easier. Click TWICE on any name in
the list on the left side of the screen to select that font. You may
also use the arrow keys and the PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN keys to move
around the font list.
- or -
Your printers' internal Landscape Fonts.
If you are using an INTERNAL font, you must be able to provide
the COMMAND STRING which the printer needs to select that font.
The Command String can be found by performing a PRINT FONTS
TEST from the front panel of your Laser Printer. This will print
several sheets of fonts which your printer has available internally.
The printout will also show you the EXACT COMMAND STRING which you
must type to select that font. IGNORE the PORTRAIT fonts.
LPE can ONLY use the LANDSCAPE fonts. This option is intended
for experienced computer users only. This is an advanced
feature. If you don't know exactly what you are doing, do not use
this option. When entering a command string, it MUST start with an
ESCape character and end with the ENTER key. It MUST also contain
PITCH and POINT information, or LPE will reject the command.
CHANGING FONT SPACING
From the MAIN MENU select OPTION F then OPTION 9
80% spacing moves your lines closer together vertically.
100% spacing is the normal spacing contained in your font.
120% spacing spreads your lines farther apart vertically.
NOTE: after changing your font spacing, it is a good idea to
print a full size test sheet to test your settings.
PRINTING FONT SAMPLES
From the MAIN MENU select OPTION F then OPTION S
Make sure that your printer is ONLINE and READY. LPE will scan the
LPE directory on the hard disk for all Soft Fonts with the file extensions
.SFL and .USL. This is a great way to print examples of
all your soft fonts. Keep the printout handy when making soft font
changes, so that you may really see what the font will look like on
your envelope.
NOTE: Printer memory varies. Some printers (like the Laser II
series) can only print up to 16 fonts per page. If some of the fonts
toward the bottom of the test sheet print out in COURIER, then your
printer memory capacity was reached, and too many fonts were downloaded
to your printer. If this happens to you, it is NOT an error, your
printer just needed more memory to print the full page.
9
THE TWENTY SETUPS
From the MAIN MENU select OPTION S
The 3 choices are:
1 - LOAD: Retrieve a previously saved SETUP. A list appears
which allows you to RECALL a SETUP you have saved before.
2 - SAVE: Save everything shown on the screen to a NEW SETUP
number. You are also prompted to enter a 23 character description
of this new setup you are saving.
3 - RESET: Sets the currently selected SETUP to the FACTORY
DEFAULTS.
The NUMBER and DESCRIPTION of each SETUP is shown on the screen to
make it easy to choose your next setup. Each SETUP file contains the
complete information LPE needs to print an envelope. You are encouraged
to experiment with this powerful feature. You should be able to find
numerous ways to make your various printing tasks much easier! As
a suggestion: use different setups for MAIL LISTS, HOME, BUSINESS,
BIRTHDAYS, CHRISTMAS, CHURCH, etc.
When entering a SETUP DESCRIPTION, use identifiable words. You are
writing a message to yourself which will remind you later about what
this particular setup file will be used for!
THE MAIL LISTS
From the MAIN MENU select OPTION M
1 - ADD - This adds the currently showing DESTINATION ADDRESS
to the currently active MAIL LIST file.
2 - VIEW - GET - TAG - DELETE - This selection moves you to
the MAIL LIST screen. Here you will be able to find a destination
address from your MAIL LIST.
3 - LOOK - View your MAIL LIST file in it's native ASCII TEXT
form.
4 - CHANGE - Change the currently active MAIL LIST.
5 - CREATE NEW - Use this to Create a NEW MAIL LIST file. You
will be asked to give the file a name. A maximum of 8 characters is
allowed. LPE will add the extension .ML to the name you enter. LPE
will allow up to 300 different MAIL LIST files to be in the LPE
directory on your hard disk.
EXAMPLES OF MAIL LIST NAMES WHICH ARE OK:
BIRTHDAY DEALERS MISSOURI ASPEN
CUSTACCT PASTDUE HOBBY BS1
BS101 BS440 ROUTE22 MARKCUST
CALIF BOSTON NEVADA ARIZONA
EXAMPLES OF NAMES WHICH ARE >>NOT<< OK:
BIG.ACCTS CAR LOTS BBS.ML LPE.ML
COUSINS[ DENTISTS.ML DO*CTORS MSISIS.IS
6 - ADD NAMES BY DATE - When this selection is active, any time
you add a name to the MAIL LIST, it will be appended to the END of
the MAIL LIST.
7 - ADD NAMES ALPHABETICALLY - When this selection is active,
any time you add a name to the MAIL LIST, it will be inserted into
the MAIL LIST alphabetically.
NOTE: We suggest you experiment with all of the choices listed
above to become familiar with all of the MAIL LIST features and uses.
10
BARCODES and FIMcodes
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2
Select BARCODES
BARCODES (called Postnet Codes) are used by the Post Office
to route your mail automatically. Normally they are printed in the
lower right corner of an envelope. They may also be printed immediately
above or below the DESTINATION address. Remember: if you have swapped
your RETURN and DESTINATION address (pre-addressed reply mail) LPE
will calculate the BARCODE from the address which was placed the farthest
RIGHT on the envelope.
BARCODED envelopes will save you postage when 50 or more letters are
addressed to the same first 3 digits of the ZIP code. (check with
your local Post Office for variations on this rule.)
FIM CODES (Facing Identification Marks) are the 5 tall vertical bars
printed near the stamp. The FIM CODES tell the automatic envelope
routing machines at the Post Office that there is a pre-printed
BARCODE on the envelope. LPE uses FIM type A Codes, which tell
the Post Office that the Sender is paying the postage.
MOVING YOUR ADDRESSES AND PICTURES
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2 OPTION P
This option requires that you have a MOUSE connected to your
computer. Place your MOUSE CURSOR upon any item you wish to move.
Hold down the LEFT button while moving the selected item. This
allows you to place your various envelope items visually to suit your
tastes.
NOTE: Use this feature for address swapping
(pre-addressed reply mail).
The ATTENTION LINE
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2 OPTION A
You may enter any SENTENCE of up to 40 characters which you want to
appear somewhere on your envelope. Use this feature with care. It
is natural that you will want to place your ATTENTION LINE in the
lower left corner of the envelope. Try to avoid this temptation, because
the Optical Character Readers (OCR) at the Post Office will NOT want
to see any characters below the ZIP CODE of the DESTINATION address.
NOTE: Use the ATTENTION LINE at your own risk. Placing it in
the WRONG place on your BULK MAILINGS could cause the Post Office
to reject your entire job.
11
ADDING PICTURES TO YOUR ENVELOPE (.PCX FILES)
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2 OPTION X
LPE allows you to place up to FOUR .PCX files (black and white pictures)
on your envelope. This is useful for RETURN address company LOGOS,
Birthday cards, Christmas cards and other creative purposes. LPE comes
with several .PCX files which you may use on your envelopes. You can
make .PCX files of your own by using your favorite drawing software.
PCX FILE LIMITATIONS:
1 - Your .PCX image must NOT be larger than 65,530
bytes when un-compressed in memory. This is about the size
of a dollar bill.
2 - Your .PCX image must be in BLACK and WHITE. LPE cannot handle
COLOR images.
NOTE: When creating a .PCX image in your drawing software, remember
this: A Laser Printer has 300x300 dots per inch resolution. If you
want to create a LOGO which is 2 inches wide and 1 inch tall on the
envelope, make the image size in your drawing program 600 dots wide
and 300 dots tall.
Envelopes will print slower than usual when a .PCX image is being
drawn. This is because of the large amount of data transfers involved
inside your printer. Do not be alarmed by this, it is natural for
your printer to behave this way.
EXACT PRINTER ALIGNMENT
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2 OPTION R
This is a fairly ADVANCED feature and is completely OPTIONAL.
Most laser printers are NOT aligned perfectly with the paper feed
path. LPE allows you to test the accuracy of your individual printer.
Select the RAW ALIGNMENT option first, and the printer will print
out a test sheet. Follow the instructions on the sheet which prints
out, and you may (optionally) enter any HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL offsets
which will correct your printer alignment.
THE LAN OPTION
From the MAIN MENU select MENU 2 OPTION L
If you do not know what a LAN is, you are NOT on one, and should
SKIP this feature.
People who are on a LAN (Local Area Network)
may set this option ON or OFF. Setting LAN ON will force
LPE to download all fonts and images immediately before printing each
single envelope (only when printing single envelopes). The printer
will be RESET after each envelope is printed. This allows other LAN
users to share the LAN printer without interfering with each other.
CHANGING SCREEN COLORS
From the MAIN MENU select OPTION C
A color menu will appear and you may select from a wide variety of
screen text colors, background colors and patterns. This is particularly
useful to people who own LAPTOP computers to compensate for different
LCD screens.
EXITING THE PROGRAM (From the MAIN MENU select OPTION Q)
When you QUIT LPE, your current setups are saved to disk, and if any
envelopes were printed, the downloaded Soft Fonts are removed from your
printers' memory, and the printer is reset. The program then exits.
12
APPENDIX--------------------------------------------------------------
Q: It's my first time printing an envelope, and the RETURN address
printed way too low, or the barcode printed way too high. What am
I doing wrong?
A: You have not selected your printer type yet. There are basically
3 types of printers. Left feed, Center feed, and Right feed. From
the MAIN MENU select MENU 2 then PRINTER TYPE. Choose the picture
that most closely matches the way your envelope is fed into your
printer. ONE of the choices WILL work correctly.
Q: My RETURN ADDRESS looks sort of smudgy. How can I fix it?
A: Laser Printers, unfortunately, are very sensitive to changes
in paper thickness, especially around the corners of an envelope where
up to three thicknesses of paper are folded together. First, try moving
your RETURN ADDRESS left and down. (MENU 2 then the FIRST CHOICE).
Second, you may have to buy a better (smoother) envelope type. Always
print a TEST SHEET when you are in doubt. (MAIN MENU then PRINT, then
PRINT TEST SHEET).
Q: I have selected my INTERNAL FONTS, and typed in command strings,
but they are not printing properly. What can I do?
A: From the FRONT PANEL of your printer, print out a FONTS TEST.
Ignore the PORTRAIT fonts. Below each font is the EXACT string which
MUST be typed to obtain that font. Remember that most printers don't
have SCALEABLE fonts in LANDSCAPE mode, only in PORTRAIT mode. If
you continue experiencing problems with this, your technical knowledge
is not broad enough to use this feature, and you should not use it.
We cannot give you the command strings for the thousands of font
cartridges, etc., because we don't know them either.
Q: I need to add about 1,000 names to my MAIL LIST, is there
a quicker way to do this?
A: Yes. The LPE MAIL LIST was thoughtfully designed to be a
simple ASCII TEXT file. Use your favorite TEXT EDITOR to edit your
MAIL LIST directly. If you don't know what a TEXT EDITOR is, then
don't use this suggestion, use LPE to add and delete names from your
database. Explaining how to do even simple TEXT EDITING is well beyond
the scope of this manual.
Q: I want to change an address in my MAIL LIST. How do I do it?
A: First, DELETE the name from the MAIL LIST. Second, type the
new name and address. Third, add this name to the database.
Q: I have 100 clients to mail to. I want to include a return
envelope inside, addressed back to my company, and the clients' address
pre-printed in the upper left. Help me.
A: Print your first 100 envelopes using a #10 size. (for example)
Next, go to MENU 2 item ONE. Swap the RETURN and DESTINATION addresses.
(the DESTINATION ADDRESS will be in the upper left corner) Next, select
a #9 envelope size. (for example) Print your 100 envelopes again.
It's neat. The BARCODE will be calculated for YOUR (RETURN) address.
13
Q: Do you have a version of LPE for Windows?
A: Not yet. Don't hold your breath, that will take me a while!
Q: Can I print on TYVEK envelopes?
A: NO. They MELT inside your printer and ruin it. Don't even
think of trying it! Ask me someday how I know...
Q: Can I get upgrades to this program?
A: Yes. Upgrades by mail cost $10.00. Upgrades via modem are free.
(you pay only for the phone call) If you don't know how to use
your modem, get the upgrades by mail. If you are very good with your
modem, call one of our BBS lines, and have your LPE diskette nearby.
From the MAIN MENU in the BBS, type DOOR. Follow the instructions
to download your free upgrade.
THANK YOU for buying ETS Software.
We sincerely hope you enjoy using it!
