  1. KMIJ Kenwood TS-850S Control for Windows.

  3. INTRODUCTION
  4. KMIJ is a control program for the Kenwood TS-850S H.F. Amateur Radio Transceiver using the Microsoft Windows Interface.

  6. FILES
  7. KMIJ.EXE is the main file.  This is written in Visual Basic and therefore requires the VB DLL (VBRUN100.DLL or newer).  The help files are KMIJhelp.HLP and KMIJhelp.IDX.  Files that end in .TSM are memory files and used to store memory information.  KMIJ.INI contains the default information such as the selected Com Port.

  9. FILE LOCATIONS
  10. All files except the .TSM files, need to be placed in the same directory.

  12. HOW KMIJ WORKS
  13. KMIJ controls your Kenwood through the serial port functions.  Just use your keyboard & mouse to select controls through the menu, buttons or by clicking on the display.

  15. FILTER 
  16. 8.83MHz & 455kHz filters may be selected by the menu or by clicking directly on the display indicators.  If the 455kHz, 12k filter is selected, the 8.83MHz, 12k is selected automatically.

  18. MODE 
  19. Modes may be selected by using the Menu or clicking on the desired mode button.  The selected mode will appear above the main frequency display.  Reverse and nomal modes for CW and FSK are toggled by a second click on the button.

  21. VFO 
  22. VFO's may be selected by Menu, control keys (^A,^B,^M) or by clicking on the VFO selection indicators on the right side of the display.  The display indicators allow split operation by selecting the desired RX VFO first and then the desired TX VFO.

  24. VFO TRANSFER
  25. VFO information may be transferred from/to any VFO/Memory.  Click on the desired freq. and drag/drop it on the one to be changed.

  27. KEYPAD
  28. Double click on the main frequency display, use the VFO menu or Control-K to bring up a direct entry keyboard similar to that found on the TS850S.

  30. BAND 
  31. The BAND menu selection allows a quick jump to any ham band by a pre-determined frequency.  30 metres does not allow SSB operation.  These frequencies will be alterable through the DEFAULTS selection in a further release.  Also, time signals from WWV and CHU may be selected for a sense of propogation.

  33. OFFSET
  34. Offset may be selected by menu or button selection. RIT/XIT indications are given on the display.  Offset is always given to allow setup before it is enabled.

  36. MEMORY FILE
  37. Upload, Download from the radio, Save and Open files and Editing are all possible through the Mem_File menu.  Memory values in this program are separate from the radio and have to be Downloaded to take effect.  CTCSS tone will be enabled only if there is a TX/RX split and FM.

  39. MEMORY EDITOR
  40. Upload, Open or create a memory file from scratch.  My Kenwood didn't like 0 values sent to it (for empty channels) so I have disabled empty channels from downloading. (for now?)  Double click on a channel listing to load it into the Memory Channel edit box.  CH has to be double digit number for valid memory channel (eg. 00, 09, 37).  Enable Split to alter TX settings.  Entry works like KEYPAD but needs your keyboard.

  42. CONFIG
  43. Com port selection is here.  A demo mode allows software display of a limited "phantom" radio.

  48. MENU
  49. The MENU button kills the overhead menu, to reduce screen space.  Click again and it comes back.

  51. VOICE
  52. Triggers the voice synthesizer in your radio, if installed.

  54. TRAK
  55. Not enabled in this version.  If you select a split TX/RX combination, TRAK will cause the TX to follow the RX by the offset when enabled.  Great for crossband sattelite operation.

  57. M UP, M DN
  58. Steps the selected memory up or down.
  59.  
  60. SLOPE TUNE
  61. Scroll bars select the LOW and HIGH slope rolloff.  Click on the title bar and the values are stored and SLOPE TUNE is opened all the way.  Click again and it returns to the selected values.

  63. FIRST LOAD
  64. KMIJ will try to read KMIJ.INI.  If not found, it will create one.  Presently, KMIJ.INI holds only the COM port info, but will contain default values in further releases.

  66. LEAVING TS850S
  67. Just close the program, like any other windows software.  The configuration information will be saved automatically.

  72. KMIJ is not, nor has ever been, public domain or free software.

  74. The registered version of KMIJ may not be duplicated other than for backup purposes. A registered copy of KMIJ may not be used in more than one computer at the same time.

  76. Users are granted a limited license to use the Unregistered, trial version of KMIJ for a limited evaluation period of up to 45 days, in order to determine if it suits their needs. Any other use of KMIJ or use past this period requires registration.

  78. All users are granted a limited license to copy the Unregistered version of KMIJ only for the purpose of allowing others to try it, subject to the above restrictions as well as these:

  80. KMIJ must be distributed in absolutely unmodified form, including ALL program, documentation, and other files.

  82. KMIJ may not be included with any other product for any reason whatsoever without a license.

  84. No charge or payment may be levied or accepted for KMIJ.

  86. Bulletin Board system operators may post the unregistered version of KMIJ on their BBS for downloading by their users without written permission, only if the above conditions are met, and only if no special fee is necessary to access the KMIJ files other than a BBS access fee.

  88. Distributors of User Supported and Public Domain software MUST obtain written permission from myself before distributing KMIJ and must follow the above conditions. This is necessary to ensure protection for myself and KMIJ users from unscrupulous individuals.

  90. LICENCE INFORMATION

Registering KMIJ allows you to use the product after the trial period. Registered KMIJ users get the current version of KMIJ on disk along with their own serial number, mailed notification of major KMIJ updates, and priority when calling the KMIJ Software support (we guarantee no support to unregistered users).

  94. KMIJ registration costs $29, and includes a 'registered' copy of KMIJ on disk.

  96. Payment may be in the form of check, money order.  All US dollar checks must be drawn on a US bank, and all Canadian dollar checks must be drawn on a Canadian bank.

This is not Public Domain Software as noted in "ABOUT" and may not be modified without permission.  However, feel free to use, copy and distribute, as long as no charges for time or materials are made.  If you don't have a Kenwood TS850S, but have another serially controlled Kenwood you would like to use this on, include the full command set information and we will attempt to integrate it.

I guarantee nothing and will not be held liable for any damages, etc. if you decide to use this software.  If you're squeemish, delete it now.  I use this and like it.  If you find something you think is a bug, let me know the circumstances and effect and I may be able to fix it in a future release.
