Hi There,
Thanks for taking time to read this file. It should save
you a couple of minutes of frustration.
First of all, here is what you MUST have ...
If Installing to a Novell(tm) Network, Then YOU MUST be
logged in as 'SUPERVISOR'. Otherwise, crash and burn.
YOU MUST have at least 500 k bytes free after loading DOS,
the Network Shell, and any of your memory resident programs.
OK, those were the only 2 musts, not so bad.
There are 5 batch files that come with the KBS:email archive.
They are ...
1) installC.bat .. will install the files on drive C:
2) installD.bat .. will install the files on drive D:
3) installE.bat .. will install the files on drive E:
4) installF.bat .. will install the files on drive F:
5) installG.bat .. will install the files on drive G:
Pick the drive that you want to install KBS:email on and 'run'
the corresponding install?.bat program.
DO NOT RUN the einstall.exe program, let my batch file do it.
If you have already run the einstall.exe program then you must
get all the files from the archive and start over.
For Example ...
If you have chosen installF.bat then the following has
occured.
A directory called F:\KMAIL has been created.
KBSEMAIL.EXE and ESETUP.DBF have been copied to the
directory F:\KMAIL. Additionally, a backup file of
ESETUP.DBF called ESETUP.BAK is also created and
placed there.
A directory called F:\XMAIL has been created.
Nothing exists in this directory except the following
sub-directorys ...
F:\XMAIL\KBSEDATA\ & this is where the system
data files are kept.
F:\XMAIL\1\ & mailbox data file reserved
for supervisor.
F:\XMAIL\2\ & mailbox
F:\XMAIL\3\ & mailbox
F:\XMAIL\4\ & mailbox
F:\XMAIL\5\ & mailbox
5 mailboxes have been created as directories under
F:\XMAIL\, for the first 4 users that you wish to sign up.
( you, as the 'SUPERVISOR', are assigned mailbox number 1.)
if you need more users, then simply create a directory
under F:\XMAIL\. Example MkDir 6 etc .. and when you add
the next user, use 6 as his/her mailbox.
( This goes without saying, but, if you are installing
to a network, you must give all potential KBS:email
users enough rights to get to these directories. )
If you already have the XMAIL and KMAIL directories,
the install program will try to create them anyway.
Using the sysop pull down menu and selecting the ADD USER
function will allow you to add, delete, and edit user
information. You might want to change your name here.
If you are NOT ATTACHED to a network then you will be asked for
your sign on name. It is 'SUPERVISOR' and your password
is 'CIARA'. You will be asked for these.
If you are running on a network, you MUST BE logged in as
'SUPERVISOR', as no other users exist in mail yet, and you will
not be asked to sign on like you would be if you were not on a
network.
After you have installed the package and you want to sign on,
type KBSEMAIL in the \kmail directory.
At this time, you are the only user that exists. You
must add another user if you want to send mail to
them. Add 4 users, using the already set up mailboxes.
Assign each user a mailbox number that already exists as a
subdirectory. ( mailboxes 2 - 5 )
As 'SUPERVISOR', you may change the location of the data
and the mailbox files by pressing the F1 key at the main menu.
If you change the locations then you must immediately exit
the program and copy all appropriate files to those locations.
Failing to do so will cause the program to crash and burn. If
you make a mistake, then copy esetup.bak to esetup.dbf to
erase what you just did and you can re-run the program. If
you change the location of the data and mailbox files, leave
a copy of them where they were until you verify that the
program is using the new files. Then you can erase the old
files.
The F9 key will toggle between color and black and white
screens. ( at the main menu only )
Please Note : This is a demo version and is not CRIPPLE-WARE,
some functions are simply not active.
they are ...
1) shell to dos
2) run pconsole
3) run snipes
4) run ud program #1
5) run ud program #2
ud stands for 'user defined'
Also, this demo is Novell(tm) aware and will RUN MULTI-USER if a
network is detected.
Of course, when you purchase a registered version, all functions
will be active and you will receive complete documentation.
This is a demo version, intended for you to take a look at the
capabilities of KBS:email.
This is the only documentation available for the KBS:email
DEMO. A full set of documentation is available with the
registered version. So, look around and experiment, running
the program is simple. If you have any problems then you
can address them on the BBS

include your name in the documentation as credited to you.
KNOWN ERROR MESSAGES :
internal error 3 Me N. Syracuse, New York
A memory error has occurred after a RUN that prevents
rebuilding of the buffer system. This occurs when the
system tries to rebuild the R space and there is less
than 16K available from DOS.
KBS:email uses the Novell(tm) SEND command in conjunction
with the 'run' command to tell other users that mail was
just left for them. ( the 'RUN' command is also associated
with running other Novell(tm) KBS:email programs. )
If removing some of your memory resident programs does not
correct the problem, log into KBS:email as 'SUPERVISOR',
and at the main menu ( horizontal top ) press the F1 key.
This will load the set up screen. Change the 'use send
command' to say 'NO' instead of 'OK'. This will bypass the
'run' and 'send' combination in the program. ( you will also
not be able to 'run' some of the Novell(tm) functions from
within KBS:email. )
open error <fname> (11) Me N. Syracuse, New York
The dbf files are not configured correctly for this
network. ( or they are not the origional dbf files )
DBF files, as they are being installed, are matched to
a network, and can not be used on any other network or
stand alone PC. (security feature)
type mismatch Me N. Syracuse, New York
You are attempting to use un-encrypted dbf files,
a no-no. ( or your indexes are corrupted, if so, delete
all indexes and let the system rebuild them naturally )
out of memory Me N. Syracuse, New York
In all likelyhood, you do not have enough memory in the
640k area free. Remove some of your memory resident
programs and try again. This may solve the problem.
KNOWN ERROR MESSAGES : continued
If you are running under Microsoft Windows and get an error,
you may have 'minimized' something to much. (ooops!)
