UltraFAX Help Information
Have some problems sending/receiving with UltraFAX? Please try the following
steps to help you get UltraFAX up and running.
1. Copy the new CASZ.DLL file into your UltraFAX directory OR the
Windows/System directory. This will depend on where the old file was. You
selected where UltraFAX should put these files when you first installed the
program.
2. Run Windows and UltraFAX. Try to send/receive a fax and see if you are
successful. Make sure your phone numbers are set correctly as well. Step 1
should solve your send/receive problem but if not continue to step 3.
3. If you still have problems with UltraFAX, close the main UltraFAX program.
Minimize program manager by clicking on the down arrow in the top left hand
corner. You should now see two icons. UltraFAX server (the one that looks
like a fax machine) and Program Manager. Close the UltraFAX server icon.
The only icon on the screen should be Program Manager.
4. Double click on the Program Manager icon to bring the Program Manager back
up to the full screen mode. Now find and run Windows Terminal. This is a
terminal program that is included with Windows. It should be in your
Accessories group.
5. Once in Terminal, click on Settings/Communications. Click on the
appropriate COM port that your fax/modem is on then click on OK. When you
first run Terminal it may ask you in the beginning which COM port you would
like to use.
REMEMBER: Windows sometimes will redo the order your COM ports are regularly
set to in DOS. For example, your fax/modem mat be COM2 in DOS but it would
be COM1 or COM3 in Windows.
6. You will get a cursor on a blank page, type ATZ and hit enter. *Note* The
text might not show up on screen unless your modem is in ECHO mode or you
have set Windows Terminal to Echo back characters to the screen. If you
can't see what you are typing that is not a problem. Make sure when you type
ATZ you type it in all upper-case on a line all by itself. Hit return a few
times to make sure before you type ATZ <enter>.
7. If terminal responds with OK go to step 9.
8. If you did not see any response, you have some sort of conflict with your
modem and Windows. Your fax/modem may work just fine in DOS but Windows is a
different environment. Make sure you are know for sure which COM port
Windows thinks your fax/modem is on. You can do this by trying different COM
port selection in Windows Terminal (go to Settings/Communications). Also,
double check that the UltraFAX Server Icon is closed.
REMEMBER: Under Windows, if one program is using the COM port then other
programs can not use it. So if you have Windows Terminal running in the
background (and not even communicating) UltraFAX can not use the COM port.
To check and see which programs you are running, double click on your
wallpaper/background and that will bring up the Task Manager with a list of
everything you are running. If the modem is working in DOS but not Terminal,
you probably want to contact Microsoft technical support as there may be a
problem with your Windows configuration.
9. Type AT+FCLASS=? then hit enter
10. You should get 1 of 5 possible responses:
Response Means
0,1 You have a CLASS 1 modem
0,2 You have a CLASS 2 modem
0,1,2 You have a dual class modem. We suggest you
run it as CLASS 2.
ERROR Your modem has a proprietary chip set and will
not work with UltraFAX. It has to be either a
CLASS 1,2 or CAS compatible fax/modem to work
with most any fax software.
Picks up the phone If your modem picks up the line and you get a
dial tone it means your modem hardware is out
of date and will not work with UltraFAX. On
some fax/modems you can call the fax/modem
manufacturer and get an updated chip to go in
the modem that will make it work better.
11. If you have a CLASS 1 fax/modem go to step 12. If you have a CLASS 2
fax/modem Type AT+FMFR? and hit enter. This will tell you the modem
manufacturer. Please write this information down for Tech Support.
12. Type ATI3. This may tell you the modem manufacturer and should tell you
the revision of the firmware of the modem. Please write this information
down. Note that there are quite a few CLASS 1 modems that will not work
because they do not adhere to the CLASS 1 specification 100%. If this is the
case sometimes a ROM/Firmware update will help. You can check by calling the
fax/modem manufacturer.
13. Please have the above information available if you still can not get
UltraFAX working with your fax/modem. ZSoft's technical support number is
404-428-0008.
