BTVIEWER Installation Instructions/
Last minute notes.
All BTVIEWER files are found in a file called BTVIEW.ZIP. You
should extract all files from the ZIP file and make sure all
files are found on the PATH.
An important feature is that while opening a file or looking for
.DDF files, the directories specified by the environment variable
BTFILEPATH are also searched. NOTE THAT YOU MUST HAVE .DDF FILES
TO USE BTVIEWER! We are working on a .DDF Build program, but
for now you must have .DDF files. (It kills me to point you off
in the direction of a competitor, but since I do not expect to have
a DDF Builder program until March 93, I will direct you to a
commercial source: Smithware, (615) 860-3500. They sell a DDF
builder program for about $ 129.00.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL ABOUT UNZIPPING BTVIEW.ZIP! Make sure you do
not unzip the sample .DDF files so that you overwrite your good
.DDF files.
If you have any trouble seeing the menus, try resetting the
colors (Set Colors under the Options menu). Also, a new file is
now sent, CINSTALL.DAT. This will install the standard green
screen color set. I ran into some problems with folks having
strange screen problems. Very odd stuff.
Another troubleshooting tip: If you are having a problem with
running BTVIEWER, Please(!) try loading BTRIEVE.EXE with the /E
parameter that causes BTRIEVE not to use extended (or is that
expanded?<G>) memory. Many a problem has been eliminated by
that advice. Also, if you have some application that runs with
Btrieve and BTVIEWER does not run, try to determine what start-up
parameters the working system uses, and load BTRIEVE the exact
same way before going into BTVIEWER.
Please begin using BTVIEWER by working with the sample data or
WELL BACKED UP data of your own. BTVIEWER is a powerful tool,
and like all powerful tools, can have unexpected side effects.
BTVIEWER may be registered on CompuServe by typing GO SWREG at
any '!' prompt. BTVIEWER's Registration ID is 135.
Registration charges will be billed to your CompuServe account.
If this software is more than 9 months old, please send you name
and mailing address, along with a blank diskette and postage for
2 ounces and I will send you the latest version of the
software. I understand that shareware tends to live on forever,
but I would like you to have the best possible impression of my
work, and while I am not currently aware of any bugs, I can
pretty much assure you that the software will be even better 9
months down the line than it is now. The address is:
Access Microsystems Inc.

Brick, New Jersey 08724
Thank you!
What's New?
01/05/92 Fix bug with string field handling.
12/08/92 Fix several details related to JOINS.
12/07/92 Fix the way we report about file not being found, also
make sure all fields are offered to be added.
Add support for ALL/WITH MATCH/WITHOUT MATCH joins.
12/01/92 First BETA 1.20 release, with 2 file join.
11/22/92 Fix ZString support. Now we delete trailing spaces for
ZStrings. It is a hard go to do anything else to ensure
that only spaces you want are at the end of a string.
11/12/92 Add Mnemonic key support to all menus.
11/11/92 (Thanks to all veterans!) Fix support for quoted
strings in restricts. It was working just the oposite
of the correct way, with respect to trimming trailing
spaces.
11/10/92 Ensure that batch processing works correctly in all
situations.
Fix problem with float decimal display. Fix at 6,
unless someone finds a way to set decimals in float
field DDF record, which appears not to be supported
by XQL/XTRIEVE, etc.
11/06/92 Fix minor problem with length of fields in browse display.
11/02/92 Release 1.11A. Add Export to .DBF dBase III files.
A more subtle change: Allow modify to
"non-modifiable" fields in file. To do this, make the
change you wish. If the return code indicates
modifiable error, BTVIEWER will now delete the old
record, and insert the modified record as a "new"
record. I would think that this could cause a problem
with autoincrement keys (yet another problem with such
keys). Let me know if this presents a problem that I
have not foreseen. I will make it an option in
version 1.11B if it seems to present a problem.
Enjoy!
10/05/92 Fix a bug in import, version 1.10C.
10/02/92 Add "ALL SPACES" and "NOT ALL SPACES" to allowed
restrictions for string fields. Increase space allowed
for integer ASCII display. Add option (make it default)
to trim trailing spaces during export.
09/24/92 Fix misc. problems pointed up by use with Macola's
DDF files.
09/21/92 Fix several problems: 1. Prevent use of "Define
Summary" option when no fields are selected. 2.
Change the title of the "List Operation Codes" menu to
read correctly. 3. Fix editing problem when
calculated field is included in view. (Thanks to:
Andres Just Cifres). (Ver. 1.10B).
09/17/92 Fix problem with Trailing Sign translation and negative
numbers. (Thanks to: Tim Goodwin).
09/15/92 Fix checking for old .VU file.
09/12/92 Fix bug related to printing. (For you C++ gurus, you CAN NOT
mix calls to malloc()/free() and new/delete...)
09/09/92 Fix problem with Import. Note that imported comma-delimited
ASCII lines must be 10 K or less in length.
08/26/92 Fix a problem with the division operator on calculated fields.
08/25/92 Fix a problem with some types of restricts of string
values.
08/21/92 Fix a problem that sometimes cropped up with large
records/limited memory.
(later...) Change behavior when deleting a single record.
Cause "Modify all" to look to default open mode in
configuration. This makes it MUCH faster if the mode
is set to Accelerated. HOWEVER, MAKE SURE DATA IS
BACKED UP IF YOU USE ACCELERATED MODE! This mode
disables all of Btrieve's safeguards. The file will
be corrupted if the file is not clossed correctly.
08/17/92 Add error message when "Modify all" tries to modify what
cannot be modified (part of a non-modifiable key).
08/06/92 Lots of small changes to make this work with some very
odd strings (with embedded NULLs). Also, enable
proper display of unsigned.
08/02/92 FIX support for modify where the value given after the
operator is a field name.
08/01/92 Fix problem with owner names not being read correctly.
07/28/92 Add support for field type 0x11 (hex 11) or Trailing
Sign. Appears to be one of the new field types with
Btrieve ver. 6.0. Used by Macola.
07/27/92 Fix a potential problem with Modify All. Add Modify
All information into .VU file, add support for
specifying function keys in keystroke files (~01 for
F1 through ~12 for F12).
07/21/92 Add support for modify where the value given after the
operator is a field name. This allows for some neat
modifications to the file, especially using the
calculated field mentioned below. This is the
complete functionality planned for version 1.10.
07/20/92 Beta for ver. 1.10. Add calculated fields, clean up
Load and Save View function to include version
information. One calculated field per view. Yet to
do for version 1.10: add support for modify where the
value given after the operator is a field name.
07/15/92 Add "Define Summary"/"Print Summary" to View/Field menu
Summary for numeric fields includes MIN, MAX, SUM, AVG.
Summary for string fields includes MIN and MAX.
07/08/92 Re-compile under BC C++ 3.1.
Fix problem when run on systems with PATH longer than
100 characters.
06/29/92 Replace help file that was improperly prepared. Sorry
about that!
Modify algorithm that calculates column width for display
and reports.
06/26/92 Fix problem with longer than 80 character string fields.
Fix memory leakage problem.
06/24/92 Fix problem with MODIFY ALL on string fields where the
new string is EXACTLY the length of the field.
06/19/92 Fix minor problem with NUMERIC import.
Add REPLACE <value> WITH <value> operation in Modify
All menu option.
06/07/92 Fix problem with DATE Import/Export.
06/03/92 Fix problem with BFLOAT import. Was not working
correctly for all valid sizes.
