  1. Bitstream Inc. has donated eight Postscript Type 1 fonts to the MIT X
  2. Consortium, four styles each of the Bitstream Charter and Courier
  3. typefaces.  Six of these fonts were shipped with the X11 Release 5
  4. core software in Speedo outline format.  The Type 1 outlines can be
  5. used with the Type 1 rasterizer shipped as part of the contributed
  6. software for X11R5.

  8. The eight fonts comprising this donation are as follows:

  10. Courier Italic
  11. Courier Bold
  12. Courier Bold Italic
  13. Bitstream Charter
  14. Bitstream Charter Italic
  15. Bitstream Charter Bold
  16. Bitstream Charter Bold Italic

  21. How to use these outline fonts:

  23. If you have not already done so, integrate the Type 1 font rasterizer
  24. into your font library.  To do this, move or copy the directory from
  25. R5 contrib:
  26.  
  27. contrib/fonts/lib/font/Type1   to    mit/fonts/lib/font/Type1
  28.  
  29. See contrib/fonts/lib/font for the files to change to integrate this
  30. code.  Rebuild the font server and/or X server.
  31.  
  32. (You may also wish to move contrib/fonts/scaled/Type1 to
  33. mit/fonts/scaled/Type1 to use the other Type 1 fonts contributed for
  34. R5.)

  36. The Charter Bold fonts distributed in R5, both bitmaps and Speedo
  37. outlines, are actually Black, a heavier weight than bold.  The Charter
  38. Bold fonts in this set really are bold.  What we have done in our
  39. local sources at MIT is to rename the old fonts to "black" and use the
  40. new fonts for bold.  The steps for doing this are described below.

  42. The bitmap Charter Bold fonts in R5 are just a rasterization of the
  43. Speedo fonts, so they can be removed to make the change-over easier.
  44. Remove the mit/fonts/*dpi/charB*bdf files.  The Imakefile in each of
  45. the fonts/75dpi and fonts/100dpi directories will have to be edited
  46. to remove references to these font files.
  47.  
  48. Edit mit/fonts/scaled/Speedo/fonts.scale to rename the
  49. -bitstream-charter-bold-* fonts to -bitstream-charter-black-*.
  50.  
  51. Move the files in this directory into mit/fonts/scaled/Type1/,
  52. merging fonts.scale with any fonts.scale file already present.
  53. Update the Imakefile to include the new fonts.
  54.  
  55. Restart the font server or rehash the font path in the X server, and
  56. you are set to use the new fonts!
