  8. February 1993 - Boxer Software is pleased to announce the release of v5.0 of
  9. the Boxer Text Editor. This version adds over 50 new features and options to
  10. Boxer, the text editor which has been called "the BEST Shareware text editor
  11. available today" by Michael Callahan, Editor-in-Chief of Shareware Magazine.

  14. Here are some of the most important features added in v5.0:
  15.  
  16.  .  Color Syntax Highlighting: Boxer will display program source code,
  17.     script languages, etc. with highlighted comments, reserved words,
  18.     symbols and constants in user-definable colors! Misspelled keywords
  19.     and unclosed comments and strings become readily visible! Popular
  20.     languages are supported; easily configurable for others. This
  21.     feature must be experienced to be appreciated!!
  22.  .  CUA Style Menus: Boxer now supports Alt-letter menu access, with
  23.     user- definable menu access keys, menu item hot letters, and hot
  24.     letter colors!
  25.  .  Multi-Level Redo: Did you ever Undo too far? Redo lets you undo Undo!
  26.  .  Options can now be placed in a configuration file on disk, as well as
  27.     on the command line, or in the "BOXER" environment string
  28.  .  Extension-specific configuration allows options to be selected
  29.     automatically according to the extension of the file being edited!
  30.  .  The 26 macro areas, normally accessed with Ctrl-A to Ctrl-Z, can be
  31.     reassigned to any key sequences desired!
  32.  .  Copy, Cut, Paste and Delete quick-icons allow for faster block
  33.     operations by mouse
  34.  .  Preferred File Extensions: designate a list of file extensions which
  35.     Boxer will consult when searching for a file to open
  36.  .  "Quick Marking": 6 new commands have been added which initiate
  37.     marking and extend the cursor in a single step
  38.  .  8 New Screen Modes have been added: switch to 26, 29, 35 or 38 lines
  39.     in EGA; 30, 33, 40 or 44 lines in VGA!
  40.  .  Auto-Scroll: provides variable speed scrolling for hands-off file
  41.     browsing
  42.  .  Searchable Help Text: search the online help to quickly locate topics
  43.     or phrases
  44.  .  Quicker Exits: a Write & Quit command has been added to save all
  45.     files and exit in one step

  47. And these are some of the features that have made BOXER popular:

  49.  .  edit in multiple overlapping or tiled windows - no limit
  50.  .  a multi-level Undo command allows *all* commands to be undone - not
  51.     simply deletions
  52.  .  full mouse support is implemented within the editor - not with a 3rd
  53.     party utility.  Mark text, scroll/drag/resize/zoom/close windows and
  54.     select commands from pull-down menus
  55.  .  extensive word processing commands provide several types of justifica-
  56.     tion, wordwrap, pagination, line spacing, headers/footers, etc.
  57.  .  reconfigurable keyboard with menus and on-line help which adjust
  58.     dynamically to display the current assignments - no user editing of
  59.     help needed to match key assignments.  Popular formats supplied
  60.  .  compile programs from within the editor and be placed upon errant
  61.     lines for correction.  Swaps to EMS/disk to make room for the complier
  62.  .  set screen colors within the editor with a miniaturized program screen
  63.     which shows the effect of color changes as they are made
  64.  .  nearly all editor options are available from within the editor - no
  65.     need to run through a lengthy external setup program to configure
  66.  .  a *comprehensive* set of marked text commands operate on both block
  67.     and columnar text: cut, copy, append, paste, delete, write, print,
  68.     indent, sort, detab, invert, total, average, fill, case operations
  69.  .  search and replace automatically across all edited files
  70.  .  locate all files matching a pattern across a drive and select files
  71.     for editing from a pop-up file list
  72.  .  extensive on-line, context sensitive help
