A GEDCOM file is a file in a special format which can be read by other
genealogy programs. You can exchange data with other people which use
different computers or different programs. This version is approved for
submitting data to the Ancestral File.
C - Create a GEDCOM file (export data)
A - Add GEDCOM file to Brother's Keeper (import data)
B - Back to BK5 main menu
This program will move data from a GEDCOM file to BROTHER'S KEEPER data files.
This program can read GEDCOM files created in PAF 2.0 or 2.1 or 2.2 format.
There will be a set of BROTHER'S KEEPER files which will get added to,
and a GEDCOM formated file, which is the file being read.
As people are read from the GEDCOM file and added to the BROTHER'S KEEPER set,
they may have new numbers assigned. If the BROTHER'S KEEPER files are
currently empty, then the numbering will start with 1.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO MESS UP YOUR EXISTING FILES IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG
WITH THIS PROGRAM. (Hardware, software, or disks full, etc.) THEREFORE:
Everyone from the GEDCOM file will be added, and linked together.
If you are adding to existing data files, use the ADD routine in BROTHER to
link to the previously existing data (using F8 or the peoples' numbers).
CREATE A GEDCOM FILE
This program can create a Gedcom file which can be read by PAF or any other
program which is compatible with PAF 2.1 Gedcom files. Some programs which
read Gedcom files, expect all DATES to be in Type 2 format. Read DOC file
about date types, and about utility program which converts dates.
The default parameters are as follows:
- in Brother's Keeper - - in Gedcom file -
Birth information > Birth information
Date after birth > Christened information
Death information > Death information
Date after death > Buried information
Fifth date > not copied
Ref (below fifth date) > Ref Num
Occupation (last field) > Occupation
Marriage information > Marriage information
Date after marriage > not copied
Message lines (7) > Notes
Text files ($$) > Notes
Program stopped - no changes made
Note: This program only inputs information if there is a
corresponding field in Brother's Keeper.
Write to Brother's Keeper files on: example C:\BK5
Read Brother's Keeper files on drive: example C:\BK5
is not a valid drive or subdirectory name
Type a drive letter, or a drive letter and a subdirectory name
Please try again
Now type the name of the GEDCOM file to read from.
If the GEDCOM file is in a subdirectory, type the drive and subdirectory also
For example: C:\PAF\SMITH.GED to read the SMITH.GED file in C:\PAF
Now type the name of the GEDCOM file to create.
The file name itself may contain up to 8 characters plus .GED
If you want to create a GEDCOM file on a specific drive or in a specific
subdirectory, then give that information along with the file name.
For example: C:\PAF\SMITH.GED to create the SMITH.GED file in C:\PAF
Normally the name of the GEDCOM file should end with .GED
Name of the GEDCOM file: example SMITH.GED
FILE NAME REQUIRED
file not found
was empty
Name contains invalid drive or invalid subdirectory name
already exists.
Do you want to Write over it or Quit? (W or Q)
Error trying to open file:
Brother's Keeper files currently contain:
This version will copy all names from Brother's Keeper files. If you wish to
copy only some of the names, use the program BKSPLIT5 first.
This version creates GEDCOM files in PAF 2.1 format. (Same as PAF 2.2 format.)
If a person has over 6 message or note lines, which drive or path do you want
the message text file created on? example C:\BK5
Normally, message or note lines are put into the message area, unless there
are more than 6 lines, and then the extra lines are put into text files.
If you want ALL message lines put into text files instead, then answer Y
Notice: if you type Y, then even a single message line for a person will take
up a large amount of disk space (2000 bytes minimum file size).
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU ANSWER N. ALL MESSAGE LINES WILL STILL TRANSFER.
Do you want ALL message or note lines put into text files, instead of into
the normal message fields? y or N
A floppy can only hold up to 244 files, unless you create a subdirectory.
0 - Read a PAF 2.0 format file (the old Gedcom format)
1 - Read a PAF 2.1 or PAF 2.2 format file (the current Gedcom format)
3 - Read a Gedcom file copied from a CD-ROM disk (ID numbers include alpha)
Choose from above (0 or 1 or 3)
2.1 Format
CD-ROM format
2.0 Format
You may choose to have all dates converted into one of the following formats:
That is the way the dates will display and print
Choose date format desired 0-6
Move the TITLE field (if used) to: 1 = before the name
2 = after the name
3 = occupation field
Location (place) names will have extra commas deleted.
In other words if a location in the gedcom file looks like:
Chicago,,,Illinois
it will be changed to Chicago, Illinois
If you want the extra commas left in, type C otherwise just press Enter
Will read GEDCOM file in PAF version 2.1 format.
Will read GEDCOM copied from a CD-ROM disk.
Will read GEDCOM file in PAF version 2.0 format.
