  4.     Look  at  the  brake  pads. If
  5. they  are not  new-looking replace
  6. them  with good  quality pads. The
  7. most  expensive  ones  work  best.
  8. (Sorry  about  that!)  The  single
  9. most  effective  improvement  in a
  10. poor bicycle braking  system is to
  11. put on the best brake pads you can
  12. get.

  14.     DIAGNOSING BRAKE PROBLEMS

  16.      The most common brake problem
  17. is "the stickies", where the brake
  18. does  not  open  well  after being
  19. squeezed.

  22.     Apply the brake,  not from the
  23. hand  lever, but  by squeezing the
  24. caliper itself. If  it opens well,
  25. the problem is not in the caliper.
  26. Squeeze  the  brake  caliper again
  27. and  with your  other hand squeeze
  28. the  brake hand  lever. Let  go of
  29. the hand lever,  but not the brake
  30. caliper.  Can  you  move  the hand
  31. lever easily? If so the problem is
  32. in the cable.
  33.     If  the brake  lever is stiff,
  34. disconnect  the cable  to be  sure
  35. the  problem  is  isolated  in the
  36. hand lever. A stiff hand lever can
  37. sometimes  be  fixed  by  applying
  38. careful  pressure   laterally,  to
  39. free  up the  pivot. Oil sometimes
  40. helps and never hurts.
