  2. 3.  Loosen  the  anchor  bolt (the
  3. bolt with a  hole drilled sideways
  4. through it  in which the  cable is
  5. fastened),  pull  the  cable tight
  6. while  squeezing  the  brake  pads
  7. together, and re-tighten the bolt.
  8. Sometimes an  assistant is helpful
  9. for  this step.  The tightness  of
  10. this  bolt is  critical. The first
  11. mistake   most    beginning   bike
  12. mechanics  make  is  to  break  an
  13. anchor  bolt.  Yet,  if  you don't
  14. tighten it enough,  when the brake
  15. is  applied hard  in an  emergency
  16. stop, the cable  will slip through
  17. the bolt, causing an accident. You
  18. must test the bolt by pulling hard
  19. on the brake hand lever to be sure
  20. the cable does not slip.

  24. 4. You  can fine adjust  the brake
  25. tension by  unscrewing the adjust-
  26. ing  barrel  a  little  bit.  This
  27. effectively shortens the cable.

  29. 5. Center the brake.  If it is too
  30. close to one side of the rim:

  32. IF IT IS A SIDEPULL BRAKE:
  33. Try  loosening  the  mounting  nut
  34. (that holds the brake caliper onto
  35. the   bike),  holding   the  brake
  36. caliper  centered,  then  retight-
  37. ening the nut.
  38.     If   the   caliper  stubbornly
  39. returns  to   the  same  position,
  40. leave  the nut  tight, then gently
  41. bang on the spring with a punch or
  42. dull  screwdriver and  hammer. The
  43. impact will cause  the position of
  44. the caliper to shift.
