  2. Follow this procedure exactly:

  4. 1.  Deflate  and   make  sure  the
  5. outside of the tube is dry.
  6.  
  7. 2.  Using sandpaper,  or the metal
  8. scraper that comes with some patch
  9. kits,  buff  the  tube  around the
  10. area  of  the  hole  to remove the
  11. outer   surface   of   the  rubber
  12. revealing fresh rubber underneath.
  13. Make  sure  to  buff  at  least as
  14. large an  area as the  whole patch
  15. will  cover.  If  you  use a metal
  16. scraper,  be  careful  not  to cut
  17. deep enough to create new holes.

  19. 3. Put glue over the buffed area.

  23. 4. Let the glue dry fully. Really!

  26. (This  kind of  glue, also  called
  27. contact   cement,  must  dry comp-
  28. letely before  applying the patch.
  29. Many  people  are  confused  about
  30. this and do strange things includ-
  31. ing setting the glue on fire!)

  33. 5.  Peel the  foil or  the plastic
  34. backing off the patch and press it
  35. firmly on  the glued area.  Do not
  36. touch the side  of the patch which
  37. sticks  to the  glue because  even
  38. the microscopic amount of material
  39. on  your  fingers  deactivates its
  40. stickiness.
