  4.      You  can  often  repair stiff
  5. chain  links with  oil or  careful
  6. lateral bending. Severe cases will
  7. require   replacement   of  links.
  8. Links  are replaced  in pairs,  an
  9. inner link and an outer.
  10.      1- and 3-speed bikes use 1/8"
  11. wide  chain,  for  which  you  buy
  12. master   links.   These   snap  on
  13. easily.
  14.      Derailleur-type bikes have no
  15. master link, all the links are the
  16. same. For these  chains you need a
  17. chain  tool.  This  tool  drives a
  18. rivet of  any link almost  all the
  19. way  out  of  the  link, making it
  20. possible  to  separate  the chain.
  21. Never  drive  the  rivet  entirely

  26. re-install  it.  After  your chain
  27. repair  is complete,  simply drive
  28. the  rivet back  into position. If
  29. stiff,  bend  the  link  laterally
  30. (carefully)  to  make  it flexible
  31. again.
  32.      With  care,  you  can  use  a
  33. hammer  and  a  nail  instead of a
  34. chain tool to drive a rivet out.
  35.      If  you  are  putting  a  new
  36. chain  on a  derailleur bike,  the
  37. correct  length   is  the  longest
  38. possible  while   engaged  on  the
  39. smallest  rear and  smallest front
  40. sprockets without sagging.
