  2.         REPLACING A CABLE
  3.      Examine the  brake cables for
  4. fraying.  Look  carefully  at  the
  5. part of the  inner wires connected
  6. into the hand levers. A cable with
  7. even  one  broken  strand  is  not
  8. reliable.
  9.     Replacing a cable  is easy. At
  10. the  bike  shop   you  can  buy  a
  11. universal  cable. It  will be long
  12. enough for any  bike, and may have
  13. two ends on it,  one of which will
  14. fit any bike.
  15.     Using  sharp diagonal  or wire
  16. cutters, cut off the end that does
  17. not fit your  bike. Pull the inner
  18. wire  entirely out  of the housing
  19. (sometimes  called  "casing"). Lay
  20. the housing against  your bike and

  24. cut it to  the proper length. Make
  25. sure  to allow  enough length that
  26. the handlebars can be turned fully
  27. to either  side.
  28.     Cover  the   inner  wire  with
  29. grease,  then  slide  it  into the
  30. housing. Hook the  inner wire into
  31. the  hand  lever,   then  have  an
  32. assistant  or a  clamp squeeze the
  33. brake  caliper while  you pull the
  34. slack  out of  the cable  wire and
  35. tighten   the   anchor   bolt.
  36.     Squeeze  the hand  lever hard,
  37. then loosen the binding bolt, pull
  38. more slack  out of the  inner wire
  39. and retighten.  Fine adjustment is
  40. made  by   turning  the  adjusting
  41. barrel.   Test    your   work   by
  42. squeezing the hand lever hard. The
  43. cable should not slip.
