  2. Installing a Coaster Brake Rear Wheel
  3. text/3/20
  4. Loosely   fasten   the   wheel  in
  5. position.  Put the  small nut  and
  6. bolt back  into the brake  arm and
  7. its  holder strap.  Do not tighten
  8. it yet. Note:  there should be one
  9. or   two  washers   on  each  side
  10. between the axle  nut and the bike
  11. frame.
  12.    Check  the chain  tension while
  13. turning the  pedals. Sprockets are
  14. not  perfectly  round  and  so the
  15. chain  tension will  vary as  they
  16. turn.  The  correct  tension  is a
  17. compromise.  If there  is periodic
  18. resistance   as  the   pedals  are
  19. turned, the chain is too tight and
  20. can  damage the  bearings. If  the
  21. chain is too  loose, (1/2" or more

  25. deflection) it may fall off, which
  26. is  unsafe. By  loosening the axle
  27. nuts, one at a  time, you can sort
  28. of walk  the wheel back  and forth
  29. to  get the  proper chain tension.
  30. When you are  satisfied, make sure
  31. the   nuts  are   tight  and  then
  32. tighten the little nut and bolt at
  33. the brake arm.
