  8.             A few tips on getting the most out of BIBL/NET
  9.  
  10.   o  You can change your password and/or export directory via
  11.      the User Information option under Maintenance. Note that
  12.      if you change your export directory, your personal datbase(s)
  13.      will have to be moved to that new directory or BIBL/NET
  14.      won't know they exist!
  15.  
  16.   o  If you have several databases, give the one you use most often
  17.      a name that sorts first in the list of your databases...that
  18.      will cause that database to display first in your selection
  19.      pick-list and can be activated by simply pressing RETURN
  20.      (or hitting escape).
  21.  
  22.   o  Be sure to put a hyphen between terms used in your descriptor
  23.      field.  BIBL considers anything with a space on either side
  24.      of it a 'word' when indexing. BIBL will index up to 9 'words'
  25.      in the descriptor field.
  26.  
  27.   o  If you have a mouse, you can close this screen by clicking
  28.      on the small box in the upper left corner. Clicking on the
  29.      'scroll bars' will move through this file.  The same is
  30.      true for the internal file viewer (V on the Main Menu).

  32.   o  Enter data into your records just as you'd like it to appear
  33.      in subsequent export files (e.g., enter Smith, John A. for the
  34.      author, not John A. Smith).
  35.  
  36.   o  Data is stored in UPPER CASE in the various BIBL index files,
  37.      but you may use any case when entering search requests. Your
  38.      input is converted to upper case before comparison with the
  39.      index is made.
  40.  
  41.   o  If you should experience a problem with a particular database,
  42.      run the BRX program to rebuild the file.
  43.  
  44.   o  You can use the LABELLED OUTPUT option (under EXPORT) to backup
  45.      your database and the ASCII Import function to read it back
  46.      into your database. Since the labelled output file contains
  47.      only the data in each field (not the extra spaces or the empty
  48.      fields), the file is often 50% smaller than your *.DAT file.
  49.  
  50.   o  When you want to transfer records from one database to
  51.      another you can use the 'T' (for Transfer) option when
  52.      the record you want to move displays. This writes a
  53.      copy of the record to the ASCII file, TRANSFER.BIX.
  54.      (the BIX extension stands for BIBL Import/eXport).
  55.      Each time you press 'T' the record displaying is
  56.      ADDED to the TRANSFER.BIX file.  When you have put all
  57.      the things you want to move into TRANSFER.BIX, use
  58.      ASCII Import to read these records into another database.
  59.  
  60.      Tip: If you want to move a lot of records that have
  61.      something in common, use the [F]ull search option on the
  62.      search menu. Then you can move through the matches by
  63.      pressing F or B and transfer the desired records by
  64.      pressing T when they display.
  65.  
  66.   o  BIBL / NET offers six levels of security. Summarized
  67.      briefly, they are:
  68.  
  69.      Level 0: read-only access. No export
  70.      Level 1: Read Only access. Limited export
  71.      Level 2: Add records to public databases. No edit/delete
  72.      Level 3: Add records. Edit/Delete records user creates.
  73.               Level 3 and above users may create personal
  74.               databases that are placed in their Export
  75.               directory. Level 3 and above users have all
  76.               rights in their personal databases.
  77.      Level 4: Add/Edit/Delete any records in any public database
  78.      Level 5: Unlimited access. Create/delete databases. Rebuild
  79.               Indexes if necessary.

  85.      this file.  Just be sure to create the file using an ASCII
