Bac(carat) Door
(--------------------------------)
Copyright (C) 1989 by David Truong
In baccarat, the object of the game is to have a hand that is higher than your
opponents, but no more than nine. It's almost like "21 - blackjack" except that
it is only to nine. We use six decks of cards in the game. You will be dealt
two cards, if the amount of the two cards is over nine, we will take away the
tens digit. For example, you're dealt a five and a seven, which equals twelve,
but since that is over nine, we take away the tens digit, so you really only
have two. There will also be a "deuce" card in the decks, which are worth two.
You will have the option of playing for time (not really recommended) or to
play for score. If you decide to play for score, you will also have the option
of whether or not you would like to be able to play ACTUAL users on the board.
Of course, they will not be here playing at the same time, but the computer'll
control their actions for them. Remember, though, if you opt to play against
other users, you're also fair game for them to play against when they are on! I
recommend playing and allowing other users to play against you, because it'll
make the game much more interesting. Imagine logging off this board having only
$300 to your name, and then calling back tomorrow and having $1000! That can
happen if a person plays you and loses to "you" (or the computer you). You can
also try to unseat the "champion" right now (provided that he/she is challenge-
able). I hope you get the idea, it's a lot of fun if you can get many users to
participate in this kind of set-up. In case there isn't enough participation in
"Bac Door", there is also a dealer that is always ready to play for your choos-
ing. The dealer always has ten times as much money as you do. Good way to try
and win some money, but be careful! On some boards, the SysOp may opt to use
the option to make it mandatory that you are able to be played against by other
real users and you can play against them. If you lose, please do not hang up.
"Bac Door" will automatically update your records even if you hang-up.
As for playing for "time", I do not recommend it, and your SysOp may also not
have that available for you, as it is toggle-able, also. If you do play for
time, remember, that is real time you're playing for, and if you lose it all,
you won't be able to call back until tomorrow. The dealer you play against for
time always has 50% more time than you do. As with the score, please don't hang
up, as your records will still be updated no matter what.
If you're a new user to "Bac Door", a screen welcoming you (new user) to this
door will be shown after the cards are shuffled. It will explain a little about
baccarat and this door (in case you didn't read these docs) and it will ask you
either one or two questions (depending on whether your SysOp has made it manual
that you let players play against you, and vice versa or not). The first quest-
ion, of course, will be "Do you want to play against others?", and if you are
shown this question, I would strongly recommend that you answer "Yes", if not,
you'll only be able to play against the dealer from now on. The second question
will be somethig to the extent of "How high should your cards be until ya don't
take a third card?". This question is only for when you are not on, and someone
challenges you. That will help the computer decide better, your preferences.
Accordingly, if you chose not to allow others to play against you, you won't be
asked this question. I would recommend that you choose "nine (9)" for this,
question because the user is a bit smarter when it's on nine (hint, hint for
people that read the docs!). You won't be into the big money until a while
after you play the game. Don't bet too big when you first start out, you have
to work your way up. You only start with $100.00, and if you lose it all,
you'll still be able to play, but you will be LENT another $100.00, and if you
lose that, you'll be lent another, but it all builds up until after it's too
late, you're in debt for a lot of money. The door does keep track of debts!
The cards and values for them are as follows: The numbered cards (except for
ten) is taken at face value. An ace is worth 1 point. A ten and all face cards
are worth nothing at all, and a deuce is worth two points. There are six decks
that are played, you can ONLY take three cards total. You are dealt two cards
originally, and you have a choice or whether or not to take another card. Just
remember, you're trying to get to "nine" or be the closest to nine. All totals
that are over ten get their tens digit subtracted. So you can get a nine and a
nine and still come out with eight. I hope I haven't confused you too much, but
that is all there is to know about baccarat. Have fun, and I hope you win lotsa
"money". There will also be a rankings program at the end that ranks every user
(not just the top ten) and at your SysOp's discretion, will make a top ten user
bulletin for display in the real BBS.
Now, when you look at a log of all matches and results, you can start at a
particular date. So you don't have to go through the whole list just to see the
newest matches. When you answer "Yes" to see the matches, Bac Door will not ask
you for a date. That date tells Bac Door to list matches that occurred on and
after the date you typed in. Be sure that the date is always in this format:
MM-DD-YYYY, for example, 06-01-1989 or 10/01/1989 or 12.21.1989 (you get the
idea?). I find that when you're on a streak, it is often good to quit the door
and go back in, I know this is against all logic, but it works for me!
