  2.                              VMEM PREFERENCES

  6.         The VMem preferences program is added to your system in the "Prefs" 
  7. drawer of your boot disk. From this program, all features of the VMem package 
  8. can be controlled  by simply selecting the gadgets.

  10.         When you run VMem,you will see a window with gadgets for the 
  11. following options:

  16. NOTES :
  17.         *       Many of these options are for advanced users,and could
  18.                 (and should) be ignored by novices.
  19.  
  20.         *       Help is available in the VMem Prefs program by pressing
  21.                 the Help key, or clicking the right mouse button while
  22.                 the mouse pointer is over a gadget.

  27.         Fast:           This option allows you to set the FAST memory
  28.                         emulation mode. Clicking the gadget (or Holding the
  29.                         right Amiga-Key and pressing F) will toggle between
  30.                         the following :

  32.                         FAST:           Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  33.                                         allocate FAST memory to use FAST
  34.                                         memory . (This is the normal mode)
  35.  
  36.                         CHIP:           Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  37.                                         allocate FAST memory to use CHIP
  38.                                         memory instead.
  39.  
  40.                         PUBLIC:         Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  41.                                         allocate FAST memory to use PUBLIC
  42.                                         memory instead. (This is probably
  43.                                         the best option for an Amiga without
  44.                                         FAST memory installed.)

  46.         Chip:           This option allows you to set the CHIP memory
  47.                         emulation mode. Clicking the gadget (or Holding the
  48.                         right Amiga-Key and pressing C) will toggle between
  49.                         the following :

  51.                         FAST:           Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  52.                                         allocate CHIP memory to use FAST
  53.                                         memory . (This is a very dangerous
  54.                                         option - don't use unless you know
  55.                                         what you're doing !)

  57.                         CHIP:           Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  58.                                         allocate CHIP memory to use CHIP
  59.                                         memory. (This is the normal mode -
  60.                                         You should probably leave it alone.)

  62.                         PUBLIC:         Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  63.                                         allocate CHIP memory to use PUBLIC
  64.                                         memory instead. (This is a very
  65.                                         dangerous option - don't use unless
  66.                                         you know what you're doing!)

  68.         Public:         This option allows you to set the PUBLIC memory 
  69.                         emulation mode. Clicking the gadget (or Holding the
  70.                         right Amiga-Key and pressing P) will toggle between
  71.                         the following :

  73.                         FAST:           Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  74.                                         allocate PUBLIC memory to use FAST
  75.                                         memory. (This is a dangerous option-
  76.                                         don't use it unless you know what
  77.                                         you're doing.)

  79.                         CHIP:           Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  80.                                         allocate PUBLIC memory to use CHIP
  81.                                         memory instead. (You probably
  82.                                         shouldn't use this!)

  84.                         PUBLIC:         Sets VMem to cause all attempts to
  85.                                         allocate PUBLIC memory to use PUBLIC
  86.                                         memory. (This is the normal mode,and
  87.                                         should probably be left alone.)

  89.         Clear:          This gadget allows you to disable programs' requests
  90.                         for CLEAR memory. (You should probably keep this
  91.                         option at "CLEAR" ).
  92.  
  93.         Reverse:        This is option allows you to disable programs'
  94.                         requests for REVERSE memory. (You should probably
  95.                         keep this option at "REVERSE").
  96.  
  97.         Force:          This option allows you to force programs to allocate
  98.                         CLEAR or REVERSE memory even if they didn't ask for
  99.                         it. (You should probably leave this at "No Force".)
  100.                         (Programmers may find the "Clear" option handy for
  101.                         debugging, but remember to leave it off to test your
  102.                         program properly).

  104.         LowMemLimit:    This option allows you to set the minimum amount of   
  105.                         (real) memory to keep free. This should probably be
  106.                         kept at about 50000 to allow the Amiga to display
  107.                         messages,etc.

  109.         Select:         This gadget will bring up a "Drawer Requester" with
  110.                         which you can select the drawer where you want VMem
  111.                         to store it's temporary files. The more this drawer
  112.                         can hold,the more Virtual Memory you will have.

  114.         Save:           Sets and Saves your current preferences, and quits.
  115.  
  116.         Use:            Just Sets (doesn't save) current preferences, and
  117.                         quits.

  119.         Cancel:         Resets preferences to previous settings, and quits.
