  6. This  file describes the CrossMAC demo.  Only some of utilities in the
  7. commercial product are distributed in the demo version.
  8.  
  9. The  demo  is a READ ONLY version of the CrossMAC FileSystem.  It also
  10. will only allow access to the floppy drives, access to Hard Drives and
  11. CD-ROMS have been disabled. 
  12.  
  13. Requirements to operate this DEMO:
  14. AmigaDOS 2.0 or higher
  15. ---AND---  Amiga high-density drive to access Mac 1.44M disks
  16. ---OR---   Amax cartridge with Mac 800K drive
  17. ---OR---   Amax II plus/Amax IV card with standard Amiga drive.

  19. If you enjoy the demo product and would like to order the full version
  20. of  CrossMAC,  please  use the "Order_Form" program.  Fill out all the
  21. information and send it to the mailing address for Consultron which is
  22. displayed  at  the end of the "Order_Form" program.  Prices are listed

  55. FEATURES IN THE COMMERCIAL VERSION

  57. For those unfamiliar with the CrossMAC product, here is a list of some
  58. the features that CrossMAC supports:

  60. Mac formatted disks (HFS) are supported with following hardware:
  61.     · Low-density, 800K floppies with either the Amax cartridge and a
  62.       Mac  800K  drive or the Amax II plus/Amax IV cards and standard
  63.       Amiga floppies.
  64.     · High-density,   1.44M   floppies   with   an  Amiga-compatible
  65.       high-density drive.
  66.     · Hard drives with the appropriate Amiga hard drive controller.
  67.     · Mac HFS-formatted CD-ROMs with the appropriate Amiga hard drive
  68.       controller.
  69. Quasi-Mac  formatted disks (HFS) are supported with the standard Amiga
  70. hardware:
  71.     · Low-density, Amax 800K floppies.
  72.     · Low-density, Emplant 800K floppies.

  89.     All  writing  has  been disabled in the demo version this includes
  90. formatting of floppies and the automatic separation of MacBinary files.

  100. UTILITIES IN DEMO VERSION
  101.  
  102.     The  Resource  Extractor  has been included with the CrossMAC demo
  103. but the ability to extract resources has been disabled.
  104.     
  105.     View Hex has also been included and is fully functional.

  108. UTILITIES IN COMMERCIAL VERSION
  109.  
  110.     Besides  the  Resource Extractor and View Hex there are some other
  111. utilities  included  with  the  CrossMAC product.  The utilities and a
  112. brief description are:
  113.  
  114.     CrossMAC  commodity  --  The CrossMAC commodity allows the user to
  115. optionally  translate  Mac  text  characters  to  or  from  Amiga text
  116. characters  or  eject  removable  media  is  supported in hardware and
  117. software.
  118.     
  119.     ConfigDisk  --  A  utility  to configure CrossMAC devices.  It can
  120. create  a  mountfile  describing  the Mac disk to the Amiga OS.  It is
  121. used primarily to configure Mac hard drives and Amax partitions.
  122.     
  123.     Mac_File_Salv -- A utility that allows you to try to recover files
  124. from a corrupted Mac disk.  It WILL NOT fix the disk but allows you to
  125. select which files you want to recover to another disk.

  127.     File_Type_Manager  -  A  utility  that  allows  you  to  manage an
  128. internal CrossMAC database.  The database coordinates the Mac 'finder'
  129. information to the file extension you can assign to the file.
  130.  
  131.     DiskChk  - This utility attempts to check and read validity of any
  132. disk and report any errors.
  133.     
  134.     DiskChg  -  This  utility  forces  a  disk change on the specified
  135. device.    This  command  is  useful for forcing a disk change on some
  136. removable  hard  drive  partitions which lack the hardware or software
  137. supporting automatic disk changes.
  138.      
  139.     Dr_CrossMAC  -  Dr_CrossMAC  is  designed  to  help   you diagnose
  140. possible problems using CrossMAC should the need arise.
  141.     
  142.     Also  included  are  Mount, Format, and DiskCopy which can replace
  143. older system utilities.

  146. RUNNING THE CROSSMAC DEMO
  147.  
  148.     To run the CrossMAC demo, double-click on the Mount'Em icon.  This
  149. will   make   an   assignment   and   mount   the   floppy  drives  as
  150. MAC0:,MAC1:,MAC2:  and MAC3:.

  153. GENERAL USE OF CROSSMAC 
  154.  
  155.     CrossMAC  separates  the  Mac file into two AmigaDOS files, a data
  156. file  and  a resource file.  A resource fork is accessed or identified
  157. on  the  Amiga  as  a file with an extension of ".rs".   CrossMAC only
  158. displays  the  forks  that has information in them.  If a fork doesn't
  159. have any information in the fork, the file will not be displayed.
  160.  
  161.     CrossMAC  displays the Mac icons for the files.  The icons are the
  162. same  icons  seen  when  reading  that  disk running under a Mac.  For
  163. CrossMAC  to  display  the icons under Workbench, the icon information
  164. must  exist.  The icon information comes from the resource part of the
  165. Mac  file.   If  the resource fork doesn't exist or the icon cannot be
  166. located within the resource fork, a default icon will be displayed for
  167. the file.  If the icon information exists, the data and resource files
  168. will display the same icon picture.
  169.  
  170.     CrossMAC  puts  special information in each icon for the different
  171. forks  displayed  under  Workbench.  If the icon displayed is the icon
  172. for  a  resource  fork,  double-clicking the icon brings up one of our
  173. utilities,  the "Res_Extractor".  If the icon displayed is an icon for
  174. a data fork, another utility, "VHex" (View Hex) will run.  This allows
  175. the examination of the data before any operations are performed.

  177.     To access the MacBinary file use the data fork name (no ".rs") and
  178. append  a  ".bin"  to it.  Then copy or read the file using the ".bin"
  179. name.   Please  remember  that this creates a MacBinary II format file
  180. and some programs may not understand the MacBinary II format.
