  3. In order for UNIX(tm) to survive into the nineties, it must get rid of
  4. its intimidating commands and outmoded jargon, and become compatible
  5. with the existing standards of our day.  To this end, our technicians
  6. have come up with a new version of UNIX, System VI, for use by the PC -
  7. that is, the "Politically Correct."

  15. The "man" pages are now called "person" pages.
  16.  
  17. Similarly, "hangman" is now "person_executed_by_an_oppressive_regime."

  19. To avoid casting aspersions on our feline friends, the "cat" command
  20. is now, more generally, "domestic_quadruped."

  22. To date, there has only been a UNIX command for "yes" - reflecting the
  23. male belief that women always mean yes, even when they say no.  To
  24. address this imbalance, System VI adds a "no" command, along with a
  25. "-f[orce]" option which will crash the entire system if the "no" is
  26. ignored.

  28. The bias of the "mail" command is obvious, and it has been replaced by
  29. the more neutral "gendre" command.

  31. The "touch" command has been removed from the standard distribution due
  32. to its inappropriate use by high-level managers.

  34. The "compress" utility has been replaced by the lightweight "feather"
  35. command.  Thus, old information (such as that from Dead White European
  36. Males) should be archived via "tar" and "feather".

  38. The "more" command reflects the materialistic philosophy of the Reagan
  39. era.  System VI uses the environmentally preferable "less" command.

  41. The biodegradable "KleeNeX" displaces the environmentally unfriendly
  42. "LaTeX".

  44. SHELL COMMANDS:

  46. To avoid unpleasant, medieval connotations, the "kill" command has been
  47. renamed "euthanise."

  49. The "nice" command was historically used by privileged users to give
  50. themselves priority over unprivileged ones, by telling them to be
  51. "nice".  In System VI, the "sue" command is used by unprivileged users
  52. to get for themselves the rights enjoyed by privileged ones.

  54. Optionally "history" is available as "herstory."

  56. The "quota" utility can now specify minimum as well as maximum usage,
  57. and will be strictly enforced.

  59. The "abort()" function is now called "choice()."

  61. TERMINOLOGY:

  63. >From now on, "rich text" will be more accurately referred to as
  64. "exploitive capitalist text".

  66. The term "daemons" is a Judeo-Christian pejorative.  Such processes
  67. will now be known as "spiritual guides", or "channels".

  69. There will no longer be a invidious distinction between "dumb" and
  70. "smart" terminals.  All terminals are equally valuable and valued.

  72. Traditionally, "normal video" (as opposed to "reverse video") was white
  73. on black.  This implicitly condoned European colonialism, particularly
  74. with respect to  people of African descent.  UNIX System VI now uses
  75. "regressive video" to refer to white on black, while "progressive
  76. video" can be any color at all over a white background.

  78. For far too long, power has been concentrated in the hands of "root"
  79. and his "wheel" oligarchy.  We have instituted a dictatorship of the
  80. users.  All system administration functions will be handled by the
  81. People's Committee for Democratically Organizing the System (PC-DOS).

  83. No longer will it be permissible for files and processes to be "owned"
  84. by users.  All files and processes will own themselves, and decided how
  85. (or whether) to respond to requests from users.

  87. The X Window System will henceforth be known as the NC-17 Window
  88. System.

  90. And finally, UNIX itself will be renamed "PC" - for Procreatively
  91. Challenged.
