  4. version 1.3.  This README.TXT, along with LICENSE.TXT, are all the 
  5. documentation you will need to use QTB.

  26. The shareware version has been improved!  You can now set all of the speed
  27. options used by QTB and configure QTB to use Proxy servers for Internet data.

  29. NOTE: Only registered version are allowed to add customized ticker symbols and
  30. select different stock servers.

  34. This README has 2 halves.  The first half gives you some general
  35. information concerning QTB.  The second section gives some information 
  36. about the installation and execution of QTB.

  39. 1 - QTB Information
  40. ====================================
  41. QTB will have different behavior, depending on the OS that you are using.  
  42. QTB's ideal environment is Windows95.  Using the new 
  43. Shell Extensions to Windows95, QTB will create an AppBar, that is, a 
  44. window like the TaskBar at the bottom of the Win95 screen, and scroll 
  45. selected stock tickers across it. If you are not using Windows95, you will
  46. see either a bar that will sit on top of all of your other applications, 
  47. or a minimized icon, that will change it's title to display the stock 
  48. information.  QTB runs on the following platforms: 
  49.  
  50. o Windows 95
  51. o Windows NT v3.51
  52. o Windows NT v3.51 with the new shell*
  53. o Windows v3.x with Win32s installed**
  54.  
  55. *When used with the new shell for Windows NT, you will see an AppBar, 
  56. like Windows95, but it does NOT resize the desktop the way it does with 
  57. Windows95. This seems to be a problem with the alpha versions of the 
  58. Windows NT shell; they will fix it soon.

  62. Other information you might want to know...
  63.  
  64. The AppBar - As far as I know MS-Office v7.0 is the only other application
  65. to effectively use the AppBar, and even then it is used as a tool bar. 
  66. Using the AppBar proved even more difficult than it should have, even 
  67. though there is almost no documentation on this particular control. 
  68. Whatever documentation that exists is either all theory or all example, and
  69. almost no explanation.  But here, it works. In the registered version, you 
  70. even have a choice of sides to dock the bar to. 
  71.  
  72. The Stock Information - Probably the most important piece, the stock 
  73. information is gathered from a stock ticker server located somewhere on 
  74. the Internet. While QTB could pull information from anywhere, there are 
  75. 4 particular servers that are used to get information for QTB.  All of 
  76. these servers require no login ID, no payment for their services, and display 
  77. prices that are DELAYED BY AT LEAST 15 MINUTES.  These servers display their 
  78. data is different HTML formats; if any other servers/services want to be used 
  79. for QTB, I need to be sent the format of their HTML results. The HTML needs 
  80. to be stripped before the data becomes useful. Note: This is a hint to any 
  81. Quote Server provider - if you want QTB to use your server, an arrangement 
  82. can be made!  Email me for more information.

  84. If a server is down, QTB will just return error messages or blank results. 
  85. You can always use the "Update Information" menu item to perform ad-hoc 
  86. updates from the server.

  89. 2 - QTB Execution/Operation
  90. ====================================
  91. To install QTB, simply unzip the ZIP package into a new or existing 
  92. directory.  You will find QTB.EXE, STOCKS.DLL, this README.TXT, and LICENSE.TXT.  The 
  93. LICENSE.TXT is very important, and should be read before you use QTB.  
  94. QTB.EXE is the main executable, and the STOCKS.DLL is required to connect to the internet;
  95. there are no other files that are needed.

  97. SHAREWARE VERSION:
  98. To use QTB, run QTB.EXE.  If this is the first time you've run QTB, you will
  99. get all of the default values.  The default 2 stocks that you will begin to pull back 
  100. are Microsoft (MSFT) and Netscape (NSCP).  Stocks will be refresh every 10 
  101. minutes, and the display will change approximately every 5 seconds.  Due to 
  102. Windows' multitasking nature, these settings may very on different machines.  THESE
  103. OPTIONS CAN ONLY BE CUSTOMIZED IN THE REGISTERED VERSION!

  105. Ad-hoc Displaying:  You may view all of the stocks at one time, by selecting 
  106. the "Display all" option from the system menu.  This menu is available by 
  107. clicking on the Properties button in Windows95, or by clicking on the system 
  108. menu button for all other OS's.
  109.  
  110. Ad-hoc Updates:  If you want to bypass the timed update, you can force an 
  111. update, from the internet server(s), by selecting the "Update stocks" option 
  112. from the system menu.  This will process an update from the server.
  113.  
  114. Other:  Close QTB by selecting Close from the system menu, in either style 
  115. of interface.  An About box, giving a little bit of QTB information is 
  116. also available, in both designs.
  117.

  119. Properties:  There are a certain number of options that can be customize
  120. and saved for all of your QTB settings.  These include the stocks that are 
  121. retrieved, the amount of time before a new stock appears, the interval between 
  122. data refreshes, and an option to choose what server the information is pulled
  123. from. 
  124.  
  125. The Property dialog had 3 tabs that are available.  The first is used to display 
  126. the stocks that you want to see.  You CANNOT add or edit any symbol on this tab;
  127. that is only in the registered version.  The second tab is used to change the interval 
  128. between displays and data retrievals, the speed of scrolling stock tickers, and the 
  129. alignment of the AppBar (only for the new interface of Windows95).  The current server
  130. used to get the stock data from is displayed here, but cannot be changed; that is
  131. only possible in the registered version.

  133. Your settings are saved when you leave the tab that you changed the 
  134. information in. 
  135.  
  136. The third tab is used for Proxy configurations.  If you are not behind a firewall, when
  137. you use the internet, you do not need to worry about this tab.  If you use an http
  138. proxy server to connect to the internet, use this tab to configure QTB to get information.
  139. The tab has 3 available fields.  The first edit box is used to store the name of your
  140. proxy server.  This should be a name within your domain (i.e. www.proxyserver.com).  The
  141. second editbox is used to set the port used for your http server.  In most cases this
  142. is port 80 (this is the default port for Netscape and http).  If your proxy server doesn't
  143. use port 80, put the port number here.  The last option on this tab will turn the 
  144. proxy support on or off.  If the proxy support is Off (the default), the settings mentioned
  145. above will be ignored, and the normal http methods will be used.

  147. In most cases, if Proxy support is needed, configure QTB to the same settings used by your 
  148. web browser.

  151. 3 - A few known problems...
  152. ====================================
  153. o    When using the AppBar (Windows95/NT), you can accidentally resize 
  154.     the AppBar.  This doesn't stop execution, and can still be resize to
  155.     it's proper size.
  156. o    The AppBar does NOT realign and draw the workspace, when using 
  157.     Windows NT 3.51, with the new shell.
  158. o    QTB will NOT run on Windows v3.x, without Win32s v1.30.
