Rational Shift
==============
by Paul Butcher
Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rational Shift is a (very) small application that makes the "Shift" and
"Caps Lock" keys work the same way as they do on a typewriter. In other
words, if "Caps Lock" is on, then pressing the Shift key will result in
characters appearing in upper case while simultaneously switching "Caps
Lock" off. This is opposed to the "standard" brain-dead PC approach of
having characters appear in lower-case if "Caps Lock" is on and the
Shift key is used.
Both Windows/NT (March release) and Windows/16 versions are included.
They are identical in functionality, except that the NT version doesn't
change the keyboard LEDs :-( This is because MS (mistakenly IMHO)
disallows this under NT. There may be a way to do it properly under
(using device drivers and the like), but I haven't had time to look into
this yet :-(
Installation
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Simply copy the files ratshift.exe and rs_dll.dll (rtshft32 and
rs_dll32.dll for NT) to anywhere on your hard disc (rs_dll.dll should
either be in the same place as ratshift.exe or in one of the "standard"
places for DLLs - on your path or in your windows directory). If you
decide to use the program long-term, then you will probably want to add
it to your "start=" line in win.ini, or the StartUp group in Program
Manager, or whatever.
Usage
~~~~~
The program is installed when it runs - no icon will be displayed. To
deinstall RatShift, run the program for a second time.
Limitations and rough edges
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
o RatShift doesn't work in a DOS Box.
o It has no icon :-( If anyone can design a pretty and appropriate one,
I'd love to hear from you ;-)
o There are all sorts of things that could be added - ask me nicely and
I'll see what I can do.
Distribution
~~~~~~~~~~~~
RatShift may be distributed freely, as long as this file is included.
The source code is available from the author on request.
