  5. 1.    About GrpIcon
  6. GrpIcon is a simple little utility for Microsoft WindowsTM 3.0 that allows you to
  7. visually customize your Windows Program Manager by associating icons to your
  8. Program Groups to replace the default Group Icon which all Groups display.
  9. GrpIcon reads icons from Windows .ICO, .EXE, .DLL and .DRV files.
  10. It also supports hDC Icon Designer .IL files.
  11.  
  12. 2.    Installing GrpIcon
  13. Installing GrpIcon is simple.  Using the Windows File Manager, copy or move
  14. the GRPICON.EXE file to the directory where you wish to leave GrpIcon.  
  15. Then double-click on the filename GRPICON.EXE, and GrpIcon will execute.
  16. An About... dialog will appear, containing two pushbuttons and a checkbox
  17. at the bottom of the dialog.  The checkbox reads 'Start GrpIcon when Windows
  18. Starts.'  Check this box to have GrpIcon automatically start when Windows
  19. starts up.  If you check this box, or if you had already put GrpIcon in
  20. your WIN.INI file, the checkbox will be grayed out and will be disabled.
  21. To make the About... box close, click the pushbutton which reads 'Let's
  22. Try It Out First!'
  23. After the About box disappears, you will have no visual indication that
  24. GrpIcon is active, as the program runs hidden from view.  If you ever want
  25. to close GrpIcon, start a second copy of GrpIcon, and the first one will appear
  26. as an icon on the Windows desktop.  You may then close GrpIcon via the Close
  27. command on its System Menu.

  29. 3.    Using GrpIcon
  30. To customize your Program Manager Group icons, follow these steps:
  31.     3.1.    Click once on the System Box (in the upper left corner of the
  32.             window) of any Program Manager Group.  This will open the Group's
  33.             System Menu.
  34.     3.2.    You will notice that two menu options have been added to the
  35.             System Menu.  These options read "Assign New Icon..." and 
  36.             "About GrpIcon..."  Select Assign New Icon.
  37.     3.3.    The "Select Icon for Group" dialog will appear.  The listbox
  38.             titled "Files" will list all .ICO, .EXE, .DLL and .IL files 
  39.             in the current directory.  You may use standard Windows 
  40.             keyboard (ALT+underlined letter) and mouse commands to 
  41.             navigate through your directory structure with the 
  42.             "Directories" listbox.
  43.     3.4.    When a file is highlighted in the Files listbox, if the file
  44.             contains icons, the first icon will appear in the box titled
  45.             "Icon Images".  If you have selected a .ICO file, the buttons
  46.             on either side of the Icon Images box will be disabled, as .ICO
  47.             files will only contain one usable icon.  Other file formats 
  48.             may contain several icons.  In this case, you can use the buttons
  49.             on either side of the icon image to search forward or backward for
  50.             additional icons.
  51.     3.5.    When you have found a suitable icon, click the Assign button.  
  52.             This will assign the icon to the Group.  To close the dialog box, 
  53.             press the Close button.
  54.     3.6.    Perform the preceding steps for each Group whose icons you wish to customize.

  56. 4.    Registering GrpIcon
  57. GrpIcon is distributed via BBSes and other channels in its Demonstration Mode.
  58. Demonstration Mode allows you to evaluate the complete program without any 
  59. limitation of features so that you can make an informed decision as to whether
  60. or not you will purchase GrpIcon.  If you purchase GrpIcon, you will receive
  61. a Registration Number which will place the program in Operating Mode.  
  62. The only difference between the two modes is that when GrpIcon is operating
  63. as a Demo, it reminds you every now and then that it is running (It was 
  64. discovered during our Beta Test cycle that the enhancement GrpIcon provides
  65. is so natural and commonsense that people tend to forget that GrpIcon is there!).

  83. SOFTWARE LICENSE
  84.  
  85. GrpIcon is not and has never been public domain software, nor is it free software.
  86. Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use GrpIcon on a 14-day 
  87. trial basis for the purpose of determining whether GrpIcon is suitable for 
  88. their needs.  The use of GrpIcon, except for the initial 14-day trial, 
  89. requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of GrpIcon, outside of 
  90. the initial 14-day trial, by any person, business, corporation, government 
  91. agency or any other entity is strictly prohibited.
  92. A single user license permits a user to use GrpIcon only on a single computer.  
  93. Licensed users may use the program on different computers, but may not use the 
  94. program on more than one computer at the same time.
  95. No one may modify or patch the GrpIcon executable files in any way, including 
  96. but not limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering 
  97. the program.

  99. A limited license is granted to copy and distribute GrpIcon only for the trial 
  100. use of others, subject to the above limitations, and also the following:
  101.  
  102.     I.        GrpIcon must be copied in unmodified form, complete with the 
  103.             file containing this license information.
  104.     II.        The full machine-readable GrpIcon documentation must be included 
  105.             with each copy.
  106.     III.    GrpIcon may not be distributed in conjunction with any other 
  107.             product without a specific license to do so from New World Software.
  108.     IV.        No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or accepted, 
  109.             except as authorized below:
  110.  
  111.         A.    Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops) may make 
  112.             GrpIcon available for downloading only as long as the above 
  113.             conditions are met.  An overall or time-dependent charge for 
  114.             the use of the bulletin board system is permitted as long as 
  115.             there is not a specific charge for the download of GrpIcon.
  116.         B.    Software vendors may distribute GrpIcon, but only after obtaining 
  117.             written permission from New World Software.   Such permission is 
  118.             usually granted.  Please write for details (enclose your catalog).  
  119.             Vendors may charge a disk duplication and handling fee, which, 
  120.             when may not exceed five dollars.
  121.         C.    Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the GrpIcon files 
  122.             to their members, subject to the above conditions, without specific 
  123.             permission. Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee 
  124.             not to exceed five dollars.
