  15. <h1>Understanding logical device migration</h1>
  16. <p>Logical device migration is a powerful and flexible feature of controllers in a Adaptec Storage Manager system.
  17.   You can use logical device migration to:</p>
  18. <ul>
  19.   <li><a href="achgrlcc.htm">Change the RAID level of existing logical devices</a></li>
  20.   <li><a href="aexpldcc.htm">Increase free space, so you can create additional logical devices</a></li>
  21.   <li><a href="aexpldcc.htm">Increase the size of an existing logical device</a></li>

  23. <p>You can migrate a logical device while the %SERVER% is running with only minor
  24.   performance degradation for users during the process. You can start the migration
  25.   immediately or <a href="ctskschd.htm">schedule</a> it for a later date and time.

  28.   do <strong>not</strong> support logical device migration.</p>
  29. <p> <b><img src="images/note.gif" width="15" height="17"> Notes:</b> To perform
  30.   a logical-drive migration, the following must be true:</p>
  31. <ol>
  32.   <li> No more than 23 logical devices currently exist. <br>
  33.     <br>
  34.     <p>During logical-drive migration, the Adaptec Storage Manager creates one logical
  35.       drive for temporary use. (You must have an extra logical device onto which
  36.       the data can migrate.) The Adaptec Storage Manager sets this logical device to
  37.       the system state. When migration is complete, this logical device is removed.<br>

  40.   <li> The logical device that you have selected to migrate must be in the optimal
  41.     state. <br>

  44.   <li>The logical device cannot be configured with RAID level-10 or RAID level-50.</li>

  46. <p>If a physical drive fails during a logical device migration and you are migrating
  47.   between RAID levels other than RAID level-0, the migration will continue and
  48.   complete. Then, you must replace and rebuild the failed physical drive. </p>
  49. <p>Logical device migrations also can recover from a power failure. If power is
  50.   lost to the %SERVER% during a logical device migration, the migration will restart
  51.   as soon as power is restored and complete without data corruption.</p>
