  7. <H1>Rebuilding a hot-swap drive</H1>
  8. <P>A hot-swap rebuild refers to a rebuild operation that is started by the
  9. controller when it detects that a drive that is part of a disk group and
  10.  in the failed state has been removed and reinserted on the SCSI cable or
  11. backplane. The reinsertion of the physical drive, whether it is the same drive
  12. or a new drive, will trigger the controller to start the rebuild
  13. operation. During the rebuild operation, the drive being rebuilt is in the
  14. rebuild state, and the logical device remains degraded until the rebuild
  15. operation has been successfully completed. </P>
  16. <P>On most %SERVER%s, when a hot-spare drive is available, the rebuild operation
  17. begins automatically without the need to replace the failed drive. If more than
  18. one drive fails within the same disk group, no rebuild takes place. If multiple
  19. drives fail in separate disk groups (one physical drive per array), the controller
  20. initiates a rebuild operation for the logical devices within the disk group containing
  21. the first failed physical drive. This rebuild operation is performed on the
  22. <I>first</I> hot-spare drive of sufficient size to become a valid member of the
  23. disk group.
  24. <P>Complete the following steps to start a hot-swap rebuild:
  25. <OL type=1>
  26.   <LI>Without removing the drive completely, gently remove the physical drive
  27.   from the %SERVER%, using the handle of the hot-swap tray. If necessary, refer to
  28.   the documentation that comes with your %SERVER% for information about removing a
  29.   physical drive. <BR><BR><B><IMG height=15 src="images/attentio.gif"
  30.   width=22>Attention:</B> When power is removed from a hot-swap drive, the drive
  31.   immediately parks the heads, locks the actuator in the "landing zone," and
  32.   begins spinning down. However, the spinning down of the disk might require up
  33.   to 20 seconds after power is removed. Do not move the drive while it is
  34.   spinning down. Moving the drive while it is spinning down might damage the
  35.   drive. <BR><BR>
  36.   <LI>Wait 20 seconds to allow the physical drive to completely stop spinning.
  37.   <BR><BR>
  38.   <LI>If you are certain there is nothing wrong with the physical drive you
  39.   removed, gently reinstall the drive into the %SERVER%. Make sure the drive is
  40.   completely installed in the backplane connector.
  41.   <P>Otherwise, replace the physical drive with a new drive that is the same
  42.   size (or larger) and continue with the rebuild operation. <BR><BR>

  52.        optimal physical drive that is defective, avoid doing so.
