  14. <h1>Understanding scheduled tasks</h1>
  15. <p>The Adaptec Storage Manager Task Scheduler allows you to run lengthy operations at a
  16.   convenient time, such as a <a href="cldmigra.htm">logical device migration</a>
  17.   or <a href="csynchld.htm">verifying a logical device</a>.

  19.   All schedulable tasks work the same way: To schedule a migration, for example, you
  20.   perform the standard set of steps; then, in the last step, you can choose to run the
  21.   task immediately or to schedule it for another time.</p>

  24.   You can run the task at the given
  25.   date and time or make it a recurring task. If the task is recurring, it runs
  26.   on a regular basis according to the interval you choose: the same time each
  27.   day, the same time each week, or the same time each month. Not all tasks can
  28.   be recurring tasks. For example, a logical device migration cannot be a recurring
  29.   task. </p>
  30. <p>The <a href="mtskmain.htm">Task Manager</a> is a tool that you can use to manage
  31.   scheduled tasks. It allows you to:</p>

  33.   <li><a href="atskmod.htm">Modify a task's schedule</a></li>
  34.   <li><a href="atskdel.htm">Delete a scheduled task</a></li>
  35.   <li><a href="atskprop.htm">View task properties</a></li>

  37. <h2>Start time validation</h2>
  38. <p>When you schedule a task, it executes on the agent machine which may be a remote
  39.   machine in a different time zone. To prevent scheduling problems due to time
  40.   differences between the agent and client machines, the Task Scheduler performs
  41.   the following checks: </p>
  42. <ul>
  43.   <li>To accommodate differences in times zones, you can schedule a task up to
  44.     23 hours in the past, pending approval by the agent.<br>
  45.   </li>
  46.   <li> If the agent determines that the task is scheduled in the past (based on
  47.     the local time on the agent machine), it will reject the task and you will
  48.     be prompted to select a different date and time.</li>
  49. </ul>
  50. <h2>Missed start times</h2>
  51. <p>If a non-recurring task misses its start time, the Task Manager flags it with
  52.   an error. You must <a href="atskmod.htm">modify the task schedule</a> if you
  53.   want to run it at another time. </p>
  54. <p>If a <a href="grecur.htm">recurring task</a> misses its start time, it is rescheduled
  55.   to run at the next scheduled interval. Example: a recurring task runs every
  56.   Monday at 1:00 AM. The agent machine is powered off at that time. When you restart
  57.   the agent machine, the missed task is rescheduled to run the following Monday
  58.   at 1:00 AM.</p>
  59. <p><img src="images/note.gif" width="15" height="17"><b> Note:</b> To accommodate
  60.   temporary or brief interruptions on the agent machine, each task has a 30-minute
  61.   grace period built into its start time. Example: a task is scheduled to run
  62.   at 10:00 PM. A power outage lasts 20 minutes, from 9:55 PM to 10:15 PM. The
  63.   task runs at 10:15 PM. </p>
  64. <h2>Error conditions</h2>
  65. <p>When a scheduled task does not run successfully, the Task Manager displays
  66.   an error icon and updates the "Status" column with an Error. If a
  67.   task misses its start time, it is flagged with a warning error condition. You
  68.   must <a href="atskmod.htm">reschedule</a> the task to clear the error. If the
  69.   error is non-recoverable it is considered critical. You must <a href="atskdel.htm">delete
  70.   the task</a> from the Task Manager; to reschedule it, you must create a new
  71.   task. To see details about the error, use <a href="atskprop.htm">View task properties</a>;
  72.   examine the Error Description field for a description of what went wrong and
  73.   what caused the task to fail.</p>
