  14. <h1>Understanding unattended mode </h1>
  15. <p>Unattended mode is a setting that alters how the Adaptec Storage Manager startup code (that
  16.   is, BIOS) handles failures during a system startup. Examples of possible failures
  17.   during the startup are the following:</p>
  18. <ul>
  19.   <li>The BIOS cannot communicate with the controller.</li>
  20.   <li>A physical drive state has changed.</li>
  21.   <li>A logical device state has changed. </li>
  22. </ul>
  23. <p>You can set unattended mode: either Disabled or Enabled. The default is Disabled.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>When unattended mode is disabled and the BIOS detects a failure, the system
  26.   remains at the recovery option screen and waits for the user to respond. </p>
  27. <p>When unattended mode is enabled and the BIOS detects a failure, the system
  28.   waits for 30 seconds for the user to respond to the recovery options screen.
  29.   If no user responds, the BIOS automatically selects the first recovery option
  30.   in the list and continues the system startup process. This mode is useful for
  31.   remote systems where a user is not present for system startups. </p>
  32. <p>Consider carefully whether to enable unattended mode. Depending on how you
  33.   use the system, unattended mode might be undesirable. </p>
  34. <p>For example, consider a system that includes an enclosure of multiple physical
  35.   drives. If the enclosure is turned off when you
  36.   start the system, the BIOS reports a drive failure. If unattended mode is enabled,
  37.   the BIOS accepts a recovery option that changes the configuration. When the
  38.   system restarts with the enclosure turned on, the configuration is no longer
  39.   correct and the system no longer works as originally configured.</p>
  40. <p>You can change unattended mode with the Adaptec Storage Manager in bootable-CD mode
  41.   only. </p>
