  8. <P>With RAID technology, data is <B>striped</B> across a group of physical
  9. drives. This data-distribution scheme complements the way the operating system
  10. requests data.
  11. <P>The granularity at which data is stored on one drive of the disk group before
  12. subsequent data is stored on the next drive of the disk group is called the
  13. <B>stripe size</B><I>.</I>
  14. <P>You can set the stripe size to 16 KB, 32 KB, or 64 KB.
  15. You can maximize the performance of your controller by setting the
  16. stripe size to a value that is close to the size of the system I/O
  17. requests. For example, performance in transaction-based environments, which
  18. typically involve large blocks of data, might be optimal when the stripe
  19. size is set to 32 KB or 64 KB. However, performance in file and print
  20. environments, which typically involve multiple small blocks of data, might be
  21. optimal when the stripe size is set to 16 KB.
  22. <P>The collection of stripe units, from the first drive of the disk group to the last
  23. drive of the disk group, is called a <B>stripe</B><I>.</I>
  24. <P><B><IMG height=15 src="images/attentio.gif" width=22>Attention:</B> After you
  25. configure a disk group and store data on the logical devices, you cannot change the
  26. stripe size without destroying data in the logical devices. </P>
  27. <P>You can set the stripe size to 16 KB, 32 KB, or 64 KB. The default
  28. setting is 16 KB data bytes. </P>
