  19. <h1>Understanding when RAID level-x0 logical devices change state</h1>
  20. <p>Start with four physical drives.</p>
  21. <p>Use two physical drives to create disk group A and two physical drives to create
  22.   disk group B.</p>
  23. <p>Use arrays A and B to create spanned disk group 1. As part of a spanned disk group, disk groups
  24.   A and B are now called "subarrays."</p>
  25. <p>A sub-logical device is created in disk group A and another sub-logical device is
  26.   created in disk group B.</p>
  27. <p>Then, create a logical device in spanned disk group 1.</p>
  28. <p>If the sub-logical device in subarray A is in the optimal state and the sub-logical device in subarray B is in the optimal state, then the logical device in spanned
  29.   disk group 1 is in the optimal state.</p>
  30. <p>If a physical drive fails in subarray A, then the sub-logical device in subarray
  31.   A changes to the degraded state. Subarray B is still in the optimal state. The
  32.   logical device in spanned disk group 1 changes to the degraded state.</p>
  33. <p>If the second physical drive fails in subarray A, then the sub-logical device
  34.   in subarray A changes to the failed state. Subarray B remains in the optimal state.
  35.   The logical device in spanned disk group 1 changes to the failed state.</p>
  36. <p>If the sub-logical device in subarray A is in the degraded state and a physical
  37.   drive fails in subarray B, then the sub-logical device in subarray B changes
  38.   to the degraded state. With both sub-logical devices in the degraded state, the
  39.   logical device in spanned disk group 1 remains in the degraded state.</p>
