  22. <p>The Notification Manager is a tool that you can use to notify other systems
  23.   running the Adaptec Storage Manager of all events that occur on this (that is, the
  24.   local) system. The user of the system types system names in the notification
  25.   list. Each system in the list is notified of all events that occur on the local
  26.   system.</p>
  27. <p>You can use the Notification Manager to:</p>
  28. <ul>
  29.   <li><a href="anmadd.htm">Add a system to the notification list</a></li>
  30.   <li><a href="anmdel.htm">Delete a system from the notification list</a></li>
  31.   <li><a href="anmmod.htm">Modify system properties in the notification list</a></li>
  32.   <li><a href="anmtest.htm">Send a test event to a system in the notification
  33.     list</a></li>
  34.   <li><a href="anmevent.htm">Monitor events sent from the Notification Manager</a></li>

  36. <p>The Notification Manager is enabled by default. To disable the Notification
  37.   Manager, click <b> <b>Actions</b> <img src="images/menuarow.gif" width="32" height="10" align="absbottom" border="0">
  38.   Disable notifications</b>. If you disable the Notification Manager, the
  39.   events are generated, but not dispatched to remote systems.
  40. <h2>An example</h2>
  41. <p>You install SystemA in a lab with a Adaptec Storage Manager subsystem. You run the Adaptec Storage Manager on SystemA to monitor for events and problems, but you want to monitor
  42.   from your workstation and not from SystemA. You open the SystemA Notification
  43.   Manager from the Adaptec Storage Manager and define your workstation in the notification
  44.   list. When running the Adaptec Storage Manager from your workstation, you are notified
  45.   of all problems and events that occur on SystemA. </p>
  46. <p><b><img src="images/note.gif" width="15" height="17"> Note:</b> You can use
  47.   the <a href="msmtpmai.htm">Email Notification Manager</a> to notify users of
  48.   events by email. This allows you to notify users who have not installed or are
  49.   not currently running Adaptec Storage Manager.</p>
  50. <h2>The Notification Manager and its events</h2>
  51. <p>Events generated by the Notification Manager include the following: </p>
  52. <ul>
  53.   <li>Progress information, such as rebuilds, synchronizations, and migrations.
  54.   </li>
  55.   <li>Problems, such as failed physical drives and <a href="gpfa.htm">S.M.A.R.T.
  56.     errors</a>. </li>
  57.   <li>Changes to the local configuration, such as creating a hot-spare drive or
  58.     defining a logical device.</li>
  59. </ul>
  60. <p>When an event is generated on a system, the Notification Manager connects with
  61.   each system in the notification list and relays the event to these systems'
  62.   Adaptec Storage Manager. If the Notification Manager successfully connects and sends
  63.   the event, the notification list updates its "<a href="anmevent.htm">Last
  64.   event sent</a>" column. If the Notification Manager does not successfully
  65.   connect or send the event, the Notification Manager:</p>

  67.   <li>Updates the "Last event sent" column with a <img src="images/s_error.gif" width="16" height="16" alt="Red X icon">
  68.     notifying you of a problem. </li>
  69.   <li>Logs an event in the Notification Manager event viewer detailing why the
  70.     event could not be sent.</li>

  72. <h2>The Notification Manager interface</h2>
  73. <p>The Notification Manager consists of the following:</p>
  74. <dl>
  75.   <dt>Toolbar</dt>
  76.   <dd>Provides quick-path icons for common tasks.</dd>
  77.   <dt>Notification list</dt>
  78.   <dd>Displays the remote systems configured to receive event notification.</dd>
  79.   <dt>Notification event viewer</dt>
  80.   <dd>Displays status information for the Notification Manager.
  81.     <p>In addition to displaying the events in the event viewer, the Notification
  82.       Manager appends each event to a logging file, RAIDNOT.LOG. If this file
  83.       exceeds 200 KB, the Adaptec Storage Manager copies the file to RAIDNOT.OLD and
  84.       creates a new RAIDNOT.LOG. If there is a RAIDNOT.OLD already, the Adaptec Storage Manager
  85.       overwrites it.</p>
