  14. <h1>Using the Adaptec Storage Manager in bootable-CD mode</h1>
  15. <p>The Adaptec Storage Manager program operates in two ways: </p>
  16. <ul>
  17.   <li>bootable-CD mode </li>
  18.   <li>As an installed software program.</li>
  19. </ul>
  20. <p>When you run the Adaptec Storage Manager program from the startable  <i> Adaptec RAID Installation</i> CD,
  21.   you are using bootable-CD mode. bootable-CD mode enables you to configure
  22.   your controller <i>before</i> you install your operating system. After
  23.   you have configured the controller and installed the operating system,
  24.   you also can use bootable-CD mode to <a href="cfintune.htm">fine-tune specific
  25.   controller settings</a>.
  26. <p>To run the Adaptec Storage Manager program in bootable-CD mode, turn on the %SERVER%;
  27.   then, insert the <cite></cite><i> Adaptec RAID Installation</i> CD
  28.   (or the CD that contains the Adaptec Storage Manager program that came with your %SERVER%)
  29.   into the CD-ROM drive.
  30. <p>If the Adaptec Storage Manager program detects unconfigured controllers
  31.   and ready drives, the program automatically starts the <a href="ccfgstep.htm">Configuration
  32.   wizard</a>.
