  97.    - The Adaptec SATA and SCSI RAID Controllers Installation and 
  98.      User's Guide contains complete installation information for the
  99.      controllers and drivers, as well as complete instructions for 
  100.      all utilities and Adaptec Storage Manager software.

  104. 3. General Cautions and Notes
  105.  
  106.    3.1 General Cautions
  107.  
  108.    - While an array is being built or cleared, DO NOT remove and 
  109.      reinsert any drive from that array. Doing so may cause 
  110.      unpredictable results for any of the controller's arrays.
  111.      
  112.    - While a drive is being cleared, DO NOT try to include it in a
  113.      new array. Doing so may cause unpredictable results.
  114.  
  115.    - DO NOT move drives containing an array or volume from one 
  116.      controller to another while the power is on. Doing so could 
  117.      cause the loss of the array configuration or data, or both. 
  118.      Instead, power off both affected controllers, move the drives, 
  119.      and then restart.
  120.  
  121.    3.2 General Notes
  122.  
  123.    - When displaying information on a physical device, the device, 
  124.      vendor and model information may be displayed incorrectly.
  125.  
  126.    - During array migration from a RAID 1 or RAID 5 to a RAID 0, if 
  127.      the original array had a spare drive attached, the resulting 
  128.      RAID 0 retains the spare drive.
  129.  
  130.    - After building or verifying a leg of a second-level array, the 
  131.      status of the second-level array is displayed as a "Quick 
  132.      Initialized" array.
  133.  
  134.    - The Adaptec controller supports only new drives or drives 
  135.      that have been initialized or low-level formatted. 
  136.      Attaching used drives could cause problems, including:
  137.      ° Existing/rebuilding arrays may go off line
  138.      ° Interrupted rebuilds may continue on the wrong drive
  139.  
  140.    - On motherboard BIOSes supporting BBS, BBS support is usually 
  141.      enabled on the Adaptec controller. This can cause problems 
  142.      during restart. WORKAROUND: Disable BBS.
  143.  
  144.    - After using a hot spare to successfully rebuild a redundant 
  145.      array, information about the hot spare drive may not display 
  146.      as expected. Adaptec Storage Manager may continue to display 
  147.      it as a global hot spare. CLI may continue to display it as 
  148.      a global spare, but the array will not have a spare attached. 
  149.      ARC (the BIOS utility) displays the spare attached to the 
  150.      array as expected.

  154. 4. Array Level-Specific Notes
  155.  
  156.    4.1 RAID 10 Notes
  157.  
  158.    - If a RAID-10 is degraded, the BIOS reports a degraded RAID-0
  159.      and a degraded RAID-1 instead of degraded RAID-10. 
  160.  
  161.    - You cannot change the priority of a RAID-10 verify. Setting
  162.      the priority at the start of a verify has no effect. The
  163.      priority is still shown as high. Changing the priority of
  164.      a running verify on a raid-10 changes the displayed priority
  165.      until a rescan is done, then the priority shows as high again.
  166.  
  167.    - A RAID 10 created using the ACU using the CLEAR method shows as
  168.      "UNPROTECTED" until the CLEAR operation is complete. Also, the 
  169.      drives' statuses are reported as Not Busy, even though the drives 
  170.      are clearing.
  171.  
  172.    - Performing a Verify and Verify/Fix on an RAID 10 displays the 
  173.      same message text in the event log, "Build/Verify started on 
  174.      second level array of array 'Array_0.'" You may see the message 
  175.      three times for a Verify, but only once for a Verify/Fix.
  176.  
  177.    - During a migration from a RAID 0 to any redundant array like 
  178.      RAID 1, 5, or 10, Storage Manager shows the status as "Degraded 
  179.      Reconfiguring" for a moment, then the status changes to 
  180.      "Reconfiguring." The "Degraded" status does not appear in the 
  181.      event log.
  182.  
  183.    - Adaptec 2020ZCR/2120S/2200S only -- RAID 10 arrays with greater
  184.      than 20 drives support the Build/Verify command, but not the 
  185.      Clear command.

  187.    4.2 RAID 50 Notes
  188.  
  189.    - Adaptec 2020ZCR/2120S/2200S only -- RAID 50 arrays with greater 
  190.      than 18 drives support the Build/Verify command, but not the 
  191.      Clear command.

  195. 5. Controller-Specific Compatibility Issues
  196.  
  197.    5.1 SATA Controllers
  198.  
  199.    - These SATA RAID controllers support the importation of legacy 
  200.      arrays or volumes created using earlier Adaptec SATA RAID 
  201.      controllers.
  202.  
  203.    - A Clear operation on an array causes a severe performance impact 
  204.      to other processes, such as Build/Verify processes, involving the 
  205.      same array members. Therefore, Adaptec recommends that you NOT 
  206.      attempt any other operations while performing a Clear operation 
  207.      on a SATA array.
  208.    
  209.    - SATA events are displayed with SCSI nomenclature.
  210.  
  211.    - Adaptec 2810SA/21610SA only -- ACU is not supported on these 
  212.      controllers when installed in the following motherboards:
  213.      ° SuperMicro P40C6+/P4DCE Server Board, 512 MB DDR RAM 
  214.      ° Intel Xeon x 2 System BIOS rev: 1.26
  215.      WORKAROUND: Use Adaptec Storage Manager on the bootable CD to 
  216.      create arrays.
  217.  
  218.    5.2 SCSI Controllers
  219.  
  220.    - In Linux, the controller does not support attached CD drives 
  221.      during OS installation.
  222.  
  223.    - Adaptec 2020ZCR/2120S/2200S only -- RAID 10 arrays with greater 
  224.      than 20 drives and RAID 50 arrays with greater than 18 drives 
  225.      support the Build/Verify command, but not the Clear command.
  226.  
  227.    - Adaptec 2120S only -- When you flash this controller, the 
  228.      confirmation message says "Writing 2200S firmware (4MB) to the 
  229.      Controller..." The model number and size are incorrect. (The 
  230.      message should say "Writing 2120S firmware (2MB) to the 
  231.      Controller...") However, the flash process is successful.

  235. 6. Adaptec Bootable CD Usability Issue
  236.   
  237.    - If you experience problems with your video display or mouse when 
  238.      you boot from the Adaptec CD, specify your hardware by typing the 
  239.      following at the command prompt:
  240.  
  241.      bootcd [options] <Enter> or lowres [options] <Enter>
  242.  
  243.      lowres -Forces the Adaptec CD to use a generic framebuffer of 
  244.              640x480.
  245.      fbdev  -Forces the Adaptec CD to use a generic framebuffer of 
  246.              800x600.
  247.  
  248.      options:
  249.      ° m=<mouse type>
  250.      ° s=<video server type>
  251.      ° mon=<monitor value>

  283.      ° <port> is a number from 1 to 4 representing com1..com4

  288. 7. Adaptec Storage Manager Cautions and Notes
  289.  
  290.    7.1 Caution
  291.  
  292.    - DO NOT run Adaptec Storage Manager concurrently with the CLI. Doing 
  293.      so may cause unpredictable results.
  294.  
  295.    7.2 Notes
  296.  
  297.    - Storage Manager requires that the following range of ports 
  298.      be open for remote access: 34571 - 34575.
  299.  
  300.    - You can run Storage Manager from a browser only under Windows 
  301.      operating systems using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and 
  302.      later. The standalone GUI is supported under all supported 
  303.      operating systems.
  304.  
  305.    - To run Storage Manager in a browser, your network's DNS 
  306.      configuration must have matching forward and reverse lookups.   
  307.      Point your browser to http://yourcomputername:34572.
  308.  
  309.    - The blink LED feature is supported only in SAF-TE enabled 
  310.      enclosures.
  311.    
  312.    - Performing a Verify and Verify/Fix on an RAID 10 displays the same 
  313.      message text in the event log, something like, "Build/Verify 
  314.      started on second level array of array 'Array_0.'" You may see the 
  315.      message three times for a Verify, but only once for a Verify/Fix.
  316.  
  317.    - Task priority is not retained after rebooting. If you change
  318.      a priority to LOW or MEDIUM, and reboot, the controller resets the
  319.      priority to the default (HIGH).
  320.  
  321.    - When an array fails, the array name returns to its default name.
  322.  
  323.    - SCO OpenSever 5.06 and 5.07 only -- Storage Manager continues 
  324.      to display arrays after they have been deleted. WORKAROUND: Perform
  325.      a View > Refresh command to update the display.
  326.  
  327.  
  328. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  329. 8. RAID Utility-Specific Compatibility Issues
  330.  
  331.    8.1 ACU (Adaptec Configuration Utility)
  332.  
  333.    - A RAID 10 created using the ACU using the CLEAR method shows as
  334.      "UNPROTECTED" until the CLEAR operation is complete. Also, the 
  335.      drives' statuses are reported as Not Busy, even though the drives 
  336.      are clearing.

  338.    - Adaptec 2020ZCR only -- The ACU GUI cannot be used to change the
  339.      controller ID. Also, in ACU for DOS, the ControllerID channel 
  340.      definition keyword is not functional. 
  341.  
  342.    - Adaptec 2810SA/21610SA only -- ACU is not supported on these 
  343.      controllers when installed in the following motherboards:
  344.      ° SuperMicro P40C6+/P4DCE Server Board, 512 MB DDR RAM 
  345.      ° Intel Xeon x 2 System BIOS rev: 1.26
  346.      WORKAROUND: Use Adaptec Storage Manager on the bootable CD to 
  347.      create arrays.
  348.  
  349.    8.2 AFU (Adaptec Flash Utility)
  350.  
  351.    - Caution: If the disk does not have enough space to save the flash 
  352.      image, an error message informs you that an error occurred while 
  353.      saving the image, and AFU saves an unusable image file.
  354.  
  355.    - When you use the Save command, you are prompted to insert 
  356.      the disk labeled AA2161 firmware. Insert a blank, formatted disk 
  357.      and label it "AA2161 Firmware Disk 1." If the disk is not 
  358.      formatted, you will receive an error message telling you that 
  359.      the disk cannot be opened. 
  360.  
  361.    - Adaptec 2120S only -- When you flash this controller, the 
  362.      confirmation message says "Writing 2200S firmware (4MB) to the 
  363.      Controller..." The model number and size are incorrect. (The 
  364.      message should say "Writing 2120S firmware (2MB) to the 
  365.      Controller...") However, the flash process is successful. 
  366.  
  367.    8.3 CLI (Command Line Interface)
  368.  
  369.    - DO NOT run concurrently with Adaptec Storage Manager. Doing so
  370.      may cause unpredictable results.

  374. 9. Operating System-Specific Compatibility Issues
  375.  
  376.    9.1 Windows - All
  377.   
  378.      - Formatting a logical volume using the My Computer function 
  379.        may result in an incomplete format which would necessitate
  380.        a reformat. WORKAROUND: Use Windows Disk Management/Manager.
  381.           
  382.      - PCI hotplug is not supported.
  383.  
  384.      - To run Storage Manager in a browser, your network's DNS 
  385.        configuration must have matching forward and reverse lookups.  
  386.  
  387.    9.2 Windows 2000
  388.  
  389.      - Verify that you have installed the most recent service pack.  
  390.        You should use Service Pack 4 or later.
  391.  
  392.      - More event notifications are generated than arrays degraded. 
  393.        For example, in a configuration with four RAID 5s sharing 
  394.        three drives, one failed drive causes six notifications--one for 
  395.        each of the arrays affected, plus two extra for the second array.
  396.  
  397.    9.3 Linux
  398.  
  399.      - This release supports the following Linux distributions:
  400.        ° Red Hat 9.0
  401.        ° Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1
  402.        ° SuSE 8.1 and 8.2
  403.        ° SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8
  404.  
  405.      - In Linux, when you delete an array, the operating system can 
  406.        no longer see the last array either. WORKAROUND: To allow 
  407.        Linux to see the last array, restart your system.
  408.  
  409.      - In Linux, the controller does not support attached CD drives 
  410.        during OS installation.
  411.  
  412.    9.4 SCO OpenServer 5.06 and 5.07
  413.         
  414.      - Adaptec 2810SA/21610SA controllers are supported as secondary 
  415.        controllers, but not as bootable controllers on these operating 
  416.        systems.
  417.  
  418.      - Storage Manager continues to display arrays after they have 
  419.        been deleted. WORKAROUND: Perform a View > Refresh command to 
  420.        update the display.
  421.  
  422.    9.5 NetWare
  423.  
  424.        NetWare supports only a single DOS partition.
  425.  
  426.

  428. 10. Motherboards and System-Specific Compatibility Issues
  429.  
  430.  10.1  BBS (BIOS Boot Specification) 
  431.  
  432.      - On motherboard BIOSes supporting BBS, BBS support is usually
  433.        enabled on the Adaptec controller and could cause problems 
  434.        during restart. WORKAROUND: Disable BBS.
  435.  
  436.  10.2  ASUS P3C-2000 and P2B 
  437.  
  438.      - The Adaptec RAID controllers are not supported in these 
  439.        motherboards. 
  440.  
  441.  10.3  ASUS P4PE 
  442.  
  443.      - The system generates many Event 15's even though the system 
  444.        continues to operate normally. WORKAROUND: To avoid filling up 
  445.        the event log, delete these events periodically.
  446.  
  447.  10.4  IBM E-Server XSeries 220 
  448.  
  449.      - If you install the Adaptec controller in a 64-bit slot and the 
  450.        on-board SCSI controller is enabled, the system scans the 
  451.        controller, displays the controller's banner immediately 
  452.        followed by BIOS NOT INSTALLED, and then freezes. 
  453.        WORKAROUND: Use a 32-bit slot or disable the on-board SCSI 
  454.        controller.
  455.  
  456.  10.5  IBM Netfinity 5000 
  457.  
  458.      - The system generates many Event 9's even though the system 
  459.        continues to operate normally. WORKAROUND: To avoid filling up 
  460.        the event log, delete these events periodically.
  461.         
  462.  10.6  Intel Xeon (x 2 System BIOS rev: 1.26)
  463.        
  464.      - Adaptec 2810SA/21610SA only -- ACU is not supported on this 
  465.        motherboard. WORKAROUND: Use Adaptec Storage Manager on the 
  466.        bootable CD to create arrays.
  467.  
  468.  10.7  Microstar MS-6321 
  469.  
  470.      - The Adaptec RAID controllers are not supported in Slot 5.
  471.        WORKAROUND: Use a different slot.
  472.  
  473.  10.8  SOYO KT333 Dragon Ultra 
  474.  
  475.      - The Adaptec controller cannot coexist with the sound driver 
  476.        (system's on-board C-Media 8738). The system reboots, then 
  477.        locks up, when the OS is started. WORKAROUND: Either do not 
  478.        install the sound driver or disable sound hardware in the 
  479.        system BIOS.
  480.  
  481.  10.9  SuperMicro P3T-DDE 
  482.  
  483.      - Mode 0 flash is not supported with the Adaptec RAID controllers. 
  484.  
  485.  10.10 SuperMicro P40C6+/P4DCE (512 MB DDR RAM) 
  486.        
  487.      - Adaptec 2810SA/21610SA only -- ACU is not supported on this 
  488.        motherboard. WORKAROUND: Use Adaptec Storage Manager on the 
  489.        bootable CD to create arrays.
  490.  
  491.  10.11 Tyan Trinity 400 
  492.  
  493.      - When running Windows Server 2003 (and possibly other Windows 
  494.        systems), the Adaptec RAID controllers are not supported in 
  495.        Slot 5 or 6. WORKAROUND: Use a different slot.
  496.  
  497.  10.12 Tyan S2460 
  498.  
  499.      - The Adaptec RAID controllers are not supported in 32-bit slots 
  500.        in these motherboards. WORKAROUND: Use a 64-bit slot.
  501.   
  502.
