  19. 1. What is SuperDIR 95?
  20.  
  21. SuperDIR 95 is a complete replacement for the MS-DOS "DIR" command. It
  22. has all the features of DOS's "DIR" command plus a huge array of other
  23. useful features. Moreover, it still remains extremely easy to use.
  24. SuperDIR 95 will operate under all major PC operating systems, however,
  25. long filename capability is only functional under Microsoft Windows 95.

  29. 2. Why use SuperDIR 95?
  30.  
  31. There are many of us who still prefer to use the command line to accomplish
  32. many day-to-day file management tasks. The file management facilities in
  33. operating systems such as Microsoft Windows 95 are often too slow and
  34. cumbersome. The most common command issued at the command line is the
  35. familiar DIR command which displays a directory of files according to the
  36. way in which it is invoked. There have been many DIR replacements in the
  37. past which usually display files in different colours according to their
  38. file extensions. However, with the inclusion of long filenames in Microsoft
  39. Windows 95, our favourite DIR replacement utilities are no longer
  40. functional. SuperDIR 95 is the only DIR replacement utility currently in
  41. existence which 'correctly' implements the new long filename system, which
  42. is known as VFAT. Of course, SuperDIR 95 still implements the older FAT
  43. system.

  72. 4. Installation
  73.  
  74. Copy SDIR.EXE to your DOS directory (usually C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND or C:\DOS)
  75. or another suitable directory and then simply type "SDIR" instead of "DIR".
  76. You may also like to rename SDIR.EXE to D.EXE and then type "D" instead of
  77. "DIR". Make sure that this directory is contained in your path.

  81. 5. De-installation
  82.  
  83. Simply erase SDIR.EXE from the directory you installed it to. SuperDIR 95
  84. does not modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI, system
  85. registry or any other files. It is entirely self contained.

  91. The following is a brief summary of the SuperDIR usage and command line
  92. options (taken from built in help):

  122. /A     Attribute specification
  123.          R Read only
  124.          H Hidden
  125.          S System
  126.          A Archive
  127.          D Directory
  128.        Limits the files displayed based on the attributes of the files.
  129.        One or more attributes can be specified.
  130. /B     Use bare mode (no header or summary information is displayed)
  131. /BYTE  Display file sizes in bytes rather than KB, MB, etc.
  132. /CLR   Clear screen before displaying anything
  133. /D     Disable colour
  134.          A Disable all colour
  135.          F Disable file colour
  136. /E     Use upper case characters for filename display
  137. /F     Display full path names for each filename
  138. /FREE  Display free space on drive at end of display (enabled by default)
  139. /H     Hide dots (. and ..) from display
  140. /J     Justify filenames (available for 8.3 filenames only)
  141. /L     Use lower case characters for filename display
  142. /M     Custom display format
  143.          N Filename
  144.          S File size
  145.          T File date/time

  149.          (N and D are mutually exclusive)
  150.        The order of the output is the same as the order of the parameters
  151.        you specify. One or more parameters can be specified.
  152. /O     Set sort order
  153.          N Sort by name
  154.          D Sort by date
  155.          E Sort by extension
  156.          S Sort by size
  157.          U Unsorted
  158.          G Group directories first
  159.        Multiple sorting criteria is not available.
  160. /ORIG  Restore original settings
  161. /P     Pause between screens (enabled by default)
  162. /Q     Quiet mode, i.e. don't display any output
  163. /REST  Restore default settings. If a SUPDIR.CFG file exists in the SuperDIR
  164.        directory, the settings contained in it will become the current
  165.        settings.
  166.        (Available in registered version only)
  167. /S     Recurse subdirectories. All directories below the current directory
  168.        will be displayed.
  169. /SAVE  Save default settings. A SUPDIR.CFG file is created in the same
  170.        directory as SuperDIR. This feature is used to move your settings
  171.        over to future versions of SuperDIR.
  172.        (Available in registered version only)
  173. /SET   Change default settings. This activates an interactive mode where
  174.        various settings can be changed.
  175. /T     Specify date/time display
  176.          A Last access time
  177.          C Creation time
  178.          W Last write time (default)
  179.        When a files date/time is displayed, this option selects which
  180.        date/time to display. Under exclusive DOS mode, this option is not
  181.        applicable.
  182. /TURBO Enable turbo scroll which results in much faster scrolling (enabled
  183.        by default)
  184. /U     Display only summary information
  185. /V     Verbose file display, i.e. display long filename, fat filename,
  186.        date, time, size, and attributes
  187. /W     Wide display format, i.e. display filenames only
  188. /X     Display 8.3 FAT aliases (only applicable under Windows 95)
  189. /Y     Vertical sorting direction as opposed to horizontal sorting
  190.        direction. The files displayed on each screen are sorted in
  191.        columns rather than rows.
  192. /Z     Display file descriptions if they exist (enabled by default)
  193. /7BIT  Use 7BIT ASCII (useful for outputting to a printer)
  194. /!     Allow SuperDIR output to be redirected, i.e. use DOS screen writes
  195. /[1234]Limit the minimum number of columns displayed. The output can contain
  196.        more than the number of columns you specify, but it can never contain
  197.        less.
  198. /?     Displays this help information
  199. NB: You can override preset switches by prefixing any switch with a - (hyphen)

  202. Here are some examples of SuperDIR uses:

  204. SDIR /A:H-S      Display all files which have the hidden attribute set and
  205.                  also do not have the system attribute set
  206. SDIR /Msna       Display the size, long filename and attribute properties
  207.                  of all the files (in that order)
  208. SDIR /O-S-G      Display all files sorted by decreasing size with directories
  209.                  not grouped first (i.e. directories are sorted with the
  210.                  files)
  211. SDIR /Md /TC     Display the long filename and creation date/time properties
  212.                  of all the files
  213. SDIR /X          Display the long filename, size and 8.3 FAT filename of all
  214.                  the files (i.e. standard format plus 8.3 VFAT filenames)
  215. SDIR /Z          Display the size, 8.3 FAT filename and description of all the
  216.                  files. The long filename of a file will be displayed instead
  217.                  of the description if no desctiption exists (default)
  218. SDIR /-W         Display all files in the standard format if /W is a preset
  219.                  switch
  220. SDIR /! > F.TXT  Re-direct output to F.TXT

  235. 8. Registering SuperDIR 95
  236.  
  237. The easiest way to register SuperDIR is to use the online registration form
  238. which can be accessed from the SuperDIR 95 home page. There are other ways
  239. to register too. You could fill out the registration form accessible using
  240. the /INFO option (i.e. SDIR /INFO) or by directly editing the ORDER.TXT
  241. file. You must then mail it to the given address. Alternatively, you can
  242. email it directly to sdir@ozemail.com.au

  247. I. Shareware Licence Grant
  248.  
  249. Please feel free to (a) upload SuperDIR to any Internet site or bulletin
  250. board, (b) demonstrate the software and its capabilities or (c) give copies
  251. to potential users, so that others may have the opportunity to obtain a
  252. copy for use in accordance with the following license terms.
  253.  
  254. SuperDIR is released for distribution as Shareware. You have 30 days to
  255. sample the full capability of SuperDIR - the Shareware version includes all
  256. the features of the registered version. After this period, if you find that
  257. SuperDIR is a valuable utility, then you must register your copy. Use the
  258. /INFO switch followed by the "R" key to register.
  259.  
  260. The cost of registering is a mere AUS$19.95 for home, business, institution
  261. or government users (quantity discounts available). Registered users will
  262. receive a registration key which will register their copy of SuperDIR
  263. (which will remove the nag screens) and receive notification of future
  264. updates.

  266. You may distribute this evaluation copy to others so that they may try it
  267. out as well, as long as you distribute it with all related files. You must
  268. not, however, sell or accept any money except a distribution fee charged by
  269. shareware distribution companies. In addition, you must not tamper with any
  270. of the files that come with SuperDIR. Doing so is illegal. Please note that
  271. you risk prosecution if you do not register SuperDIR after 30 days of use.
  272. Registration simply pays for continued development of this product. This
  273. will make SuperDIR an even better product in the future.

  279. You are authorised to make archival copies of this software for the sole
  280. purpose of backing up your investment from loss. Under no circumstances may
  281. you copy this software for the purposes of distribution to others. Unless
  282. additional copies were registered, this software can only be used on one
  283. computer at any one time, otherwise, it may be used on as many machines as
  284. registered. In addition, you must not tamper with any of the files that
  285. come with SuperDIR. Doing so is illegal.
