  80.               Introducing XWORD,  which allows  the entry, creation, and
  81.             working of  crossword puzzles  within the  Windows graphical
  82.             interface. Xword  does this  while maintaining  the look and
  83.             feel of the familiar crossword puzzle.

  85.               The look of a crossword puzzle is maintained by displaying
  86.             a puzzle  in a way that is familiar to anyone who has worked
  87.             a crossword  puzzle. Xword  displays the puzzle in black and
  88.             white and  shows the  numbers within  the squares. When most
  89.             people  work   a  crossword  they  jump  around  the  puzzle
  90.             answering questions  in several  areas of the puzzle. Xword,
  91.             with the  use of  the mouse, maintains this crossword puzzle
  92.             feel by  allowing the user to jump around the puzzle quickly
  93.             and easily.

  95.               Xword uses several other Windows features. For example the
  96.             ability to  work more  than one  puzzle  at  a  time.  Other
  97.             features include  the ability to enter or work a puzzle that
  98.             doesn't fit  on the  screen or  within a  window, by  use of
  99.             scroll bars.

  101.               All this  leads to  the fact  that crossword  puzzles on a
  102.             personal computer have never been easier or more fun.

  212.               While working  a crossword  puzzle in  XWORD  the  working
  213.             direction  is   very  important.   Obviously,  the   working
  214.             direction  can   be  either  across  or  down.  The  working
  215.             direction is  the  direction  in  which  answers  are  being
  216.             accepted.

  218.               Xword shows the current working direction in several ways.
  219.             If you  are using a mouse the simplest is that the cursor is
  220.             either a hand pointing across or down with the corresponding
  221.             letter "A" or "D" in the palm. The working direction is also
  222.             displayed in  the title  of the question window, for example
  223.             "33  Across"   would  be  displayed.  The  last  method  for
  224.             displaying the  working direction  is on  the menu  bar. The
  225.             menu bar  has both  Across and  Down, whichever is greyed is
  226.             the current working direction.

  228.               The working direction can be changed by using the menu bar
  229.             with either the mouse or the keyboard. With the mouse simply
  230.             click the  non-greyed direction  on the  menu  bar  and  the
  231.             direction will  change. From  the keyboard  use the  alt key
  232.             with the first letter of the direction.

  237.               The Question  window displays the current question number,
  238.             working direction, and the current question for this number.
  239.             The window  can be  moved anywhere on the screen with either
  240.             mouse or the question window's system menu.

  245.               When the  puzzle window  is active  a flashing square will
  246.             appear in  the puzzle.  This flashing  square  is  called  a
  247.             caret.  The  caret  location  is  where  answers  are  being
  248.             accepted.  If  moving  changes  the  current  question,  the
  249.             question box is updated with the new question.

  251.               Moving the  caret within  a puzzle can be done either with
  252.             the mouse or with the cursor keys. Using the cursor keys the
  253.             caret will  move to  the next  available non-black square in
  254.             the direction  of the cursor key. To move the caret with the
  255.             mouse, click a square with the mouse and the caret will move
  256.             to that square.

  271.               There are  options on  the menu bar that will allow you to
  272.             move to  the next or previous question. By clicking the Next
  273.             or Previous  options with  the mouse or using the alt "N" or
  274.             the "P"  from the keyboard, the caret will move to the first
  275.             square of the next or previous question.

  277.               If the  puzzle doesn't fit in the window, scroll bars will
  278.             appear that  will allow the puzzle to be scrolled within the
  279.             window. The  scroll bars  can  be  used  by  the  mouse  but
  280.             scrolling can  also be  done from the keyboard. Scrolling is
  281.             done from  the keyboard by using the pageup, pagedown, home,
  282.             and end keys.

  287.               Entering answers  to a puzzle is done by simply typing the
  288.             letters of  the  answer  starting  at  the  current  square.
  289.             Answers are  accepted only in the current working direction.
  290.             The backspace  key may  be used  to remove  an entry  in the
  291.             square prior  to the  current square.  The space  bar can be
  292.             used to remove an entry in the current square.

  297.               Xword allows  the saving  of puzzles  so that  they may be
  298.             recalled later.  Puzzle are  saved within a filename with an
  299.             extension of  ".PZL". To save a puzzle, the menu item "File"
  300.             is  selected.   Within  this  selection  there  are  further
  301.             selections, two  of which  are used  for saving puzzles. The
  302.             "Save" item will save a puzzle that already has a file name.
  303.             The "Save  As..." selection  will display  a dialog box that
  304.             will accept  a new  file name  or  allow  the  changing  the
  305.             current file  name.  The  dialog  box  will  also  accept  a
  306.             directory name  under which  the puzzle will be saved. If no
  307.             directory is  specified the  puzzle will  be  saved  in  the
  308.             current directory.  All answers will be saved along with the
  309.             puzzle, so  a puzzle may be started and completed at a later
  310.             time.

  315.               To recall  a previously saved puzzle, select the 'Open..."
  316.             option from  the "File"  menu item.  A dialog  box  will  be
  317.             displayed that  will allow  the opening  of  a  puzzle.  The
  318.             dialog box  will display all puzzles that are on the current
  319.             directory, along  with  the  other  directories  and  drives
  320.             available. Once  a file  has been chosen or entered the "OK"
  321.             button will load the puzzle.

  339.               To  clear   the  answers   entered,  select   the   'Clear
  340.             Answers...' option  from the  "Puzzle" menu item. Once Xword
  341.             has verified  that the  selection was  correct it will clear
  342.             the answers.

  347.               Crossword puzzles  may at  times have titles. The title is
  348.             usually a  clue to  several questions  in the puzzle. Within
  349.             Xword if  there is  a title  it appears in the windows title
  350.             bar. If there is no title, the filename appears in the title
  351.             bar of  the window. Within Xword the title can be entered or
  352.             changed in  two places.  The title  is entered  as  part  of
  353.             creating a new puzzle. The title can be changed by selecting
  354.             the  'Title'  option  from  the  'Puzzle'  menu  item.  This
  355.             selection will  display a  dialog box  that will  allow  the
  356.             title to be changed.

  361.               While working  a crossword puzzle there may come a time in
  362.             which the  remaining questions  cannot be  answered, and the
  363.             user wants  to see  the solution. (I know this never happens
  364.             to most  of you.)  At  this  point  Xword  can  display  the
  365.             solutions to  the puzzle.  This, of course, is assuming that
  366.             there are  solutions to the puzzle. To show solutions to the
  367.             puzzle, select the 'Show Solutions' option from the 'Puzzle'
  368.             menu item.

  370.               Xword will  show solutions  to the  puzzle and  show which
  371.             entered  answers   are  correct.  Xword  will  show  letters
  372.             answered correctly by displaying them in upper case letters.
  373.             Incorrect answers show the current letter in upper case with
  374.             a slash  through the  letter. If  there was  no answer or no
  375.             solution  the  correct  letter  or  the  letter  entered  is
  376.             displayed in  lower case.  If there  is  no  answer  and  no
  377.             solution the square is left blank.

  382.               While working  a crossword  puzzle, Xword  is  capable  of
  383.             giving clues  to the  solution of the questions. These clues
  384.             are of  two types,  either letter  clues or  word clues.  To
  385.             setup Xword  to give  clues select  the 'Clues'  menu  item.
  386.             Within this  menu item  there are three possible selections,
  387.             'No Clues',  'Letter Clues',  or 'Word  Clues'. The  current
  388.             selection has a check mark next to it.

  403.               Clues are  given by  notifying the  user that an incorrect
  404.             letter or  word has been entered. This is done by sounding a
  405.             beep if  the letter  or word is incorrect. Letter clues will
  406.             notify the  user as  the letter  is being  typed. Word clues
  407.             will notify  the user  when a complete word has been entered

  476.               Xword will  allow the  entry of puzzles. These puzzles may
  477.             be  puzzles  that  are  found  in  the  newspaper  or  other
  478.             publications, or they may be puzzles created from scratch.

  480.               To start a new puzzle, select the 'New...' option from the
  481.             'File' menu  item. Xword will display a dialog box that asks
  482.             for the  number of  squares across,  the number  of  squares
  483.             down, and  the title  of the new puzzle. Once the dialog box
  484.             has been  completed correctly,  Xword will  display a  blank
  485.             puzzle ready for entry.

  490.               In the previous section a new puzzle was created. The next
  491.             step is  to fill in the black squares. The black squares can
  492.             be filled  in with  either the  mouse, or from the keyboard.
  493.             Xword will only allow puzzles built that follow rules set by
  494.             The Crossword Puzzle Federation.

  496.               Filling in  in the  black squares  with the  mouse is very
  497.             simple. By  double clicking  a square, it changes from white
  498.             to black, or visa vera. The puzzle will renumber itself.

  500.               Filling in  the black  squares using the keyboard requires
  501.             that  the  build  mode  be  activated.  The  build  mode  is
  502.             activated by  selecting the  'Build Mode'  option  from  the
  503.             'Puzzle' menu  item. Once  in build  mode, move the caret to
  504.             the square  you wish to change, and press the space bar. The
  505.             square will change from white to black or visa vera. To exit
  506.             build mode  again, select the 'Build Mode' from the 'Puzzle'
  507.             menu item.  When in build mode the question box displays the
  508.             fact that  the build  mode is  activated. As  with using the
  509.             mouse the puzzle will renumber itself.

  514.               Once the  black and white squares are setup, the questions
  515.             can be  entered. At  this point  the build  mode must not be
  516.             active. To  enter questions  move the  caret to  one of  the
  517.             squares within  the question to be entered or changed. Next,
  518.             activate the  question box.  This is done by either clicking
  519.             the box  with the  mouse or  using  the  alt  F6  keys.  The
  520.             question box is a standard Windows edit box.

  535.               The method  above is  useful for  changing questions. But,
  536.             for a  faster  method  the  following  can  be  used.  First
  537.             activate the  question dialog  box. Next, use the alt 'P' or
  538.             the alt  'N' keys  to get to the question you wish to enter,
  539.             and enter  the question. From this point the alt 'N' and 'P'
  540.             keys can  again be  used to  get to  the  next  or  previous
  541.             question. At  this point  you can  also change  the  working
  542.             direction by  using the  alt 'A'  or the alt 'D' keys. Using
  543.             these alted  keys will  leave  the  question  box  activated
  544.             allowing the questions to be entered very quickly.

  549.               Once a  puzzle has  been created and the questions entered
  550.             the answers  can be  entered. The answers can be entered can
  551.             be entered  by simply  coping them  in to  the puzzle, or by
  552.             working the  puzzle normally.  Once the  answers are entered
  553.             and assuming  that they are all correct, (I'm sure they are)
  554.             the answers  can be  made into  the solutions.  To make  the
  555.             answers the  solutions select  the 'Make  Solutions' options
  556.             from the  'Puzzle' menu item. Xword will verify that this is
  557.             what is  to be  done and  proceeds to  make the  answers the
  558.             solutions.

  560.               Once solutions  are entered,  the next  person to work the
  561.             puzzle can get clues and solutions to this puzzle.

  566.               To protect  a puzzle  and its  solutions from  accidentlly
  567.             being changed  a puzzle can be set to not allow any changes.
  568.             This state  is set  by selecting the 'No Change' option from
  569.             the 'Puzzle'  menu item.  Once set  questions,  squares,  or
  570.             solutions cannot be changed.
