  17. REQUIREMENTS:
  18. =============
  19.     Windows 3.1, windows compatible PC computer, windows compatible
  20.     display with 640x480 resolution or higher, 1 Meg RAM, 2 Meg free on hard disk.

  22.     Recommended:
  23.         Windows 3.1, 386 or 486+ CPU running at 25mhz+, VGA monitor,
  24.         640x480 resolution or higher, 2 Meg RAM+, 2 Meg free hard disk.

  26. INSTALLATION:
  27. =============
  28.     To install this blackjack game from the Beta Test Version found 
  29.     on Compuserve, simply copy the file "ULTIMA.EXE" file to the desired
  30.     directory ("\ULTIMA21" suggested) on your hard disk and run the program. 
  31.  
  32.     This is a self-extracting packed file and running it will unpack all the
  33.     needed files and programs. Once this self-extraction is complete, this 
  34.     file can be removed. However, you should always retain a copy of this 
  35.     file on diskette or tape just in case you to reload it in the future.
  36.  
  37.     To start the blackack game, run the file ULTIMA21.EXE from file manager.
  38.  
  39.     The icon file ULTIMA21.ICO contains the icon for you to use if you wish 
  40.     to add ULTIMA 21 DELUXE FOR WINDOWS to your Games program group or set
  41.     one up just for this blackjack game. Please see the Windows Users Manual
  42.     for instructions on adding Program Items or setting up Program Groups.

  44.     This program was written in Visual Basic V3.0 and requires the file
  45.     VBRUN300.DLL (included), the file QCARD.DLL (included) and the file
  46.     MHAS200.VBX (included).

  71. ON-LINE HELP
  72. ============
  73.     The help file for ULTIMA 21 DELUXE FOR WINDOWS is being created and will
  74.     be available with the release of the final version.
  75.  
  76. BASIC OPERATION:
  77. ===============
  78.     ULTIMA 21 DELUXE is a true windows application which can be run and 
  79.     controlled by you just like any other windows application.
  80.  
  81.     When first loaded, ULTIMA 21 DELUXE will display its opening window 
  82.     while it initializes itself. Next a photo of the Casino will appear. 
  83.  
  84.     Shortly after that, the Casino's Manager will appear and ask you to 
  85.     enter your name and then he will take you to a blackjack table. 
  86.  
  87.     When ULTIMA 21 DELUXE starts, it will load a file called "ULTIMA21.DEF" 
  88.     as the default table rules, player names, playing strategy, and other 
  89.     environment variables. If it cannot find this file, it will use its
  90.     own default settings. See the next section for information regarding 
  91.     saving/restoring games and the default settings.
  92.  
  93.     When the blackjack table is first displayed, you will notice several
  94.     buttons    at the bottom of the screen. Some of which will be disabled
  95.     (grayed out) and some of which will be enabled. At the start of a
  96.     new hand, the DEAL button will be the default button and should be
  97.     used to deal the next hand. To deal, move the mouse pointer to the
  98.     DEAL button and press the left mouse button.
  99.     
  100.     The other buttons will be enabled/disabled depending on what is
  101.     happening at the table. For example: the DOUBLE button will only be 
  102.     enabled when a player's hand is such that a double down is allowed. 
  103.     The same is true for the SPLIT and SURRENDER buttons as well. The
  104.     status of these two buttons is determined based on the double down 
  105.     and split rules for the table and one the cards currently dealt to
  106.     the player.
  107.  
  108.     The HIT and STAND buttons are always enabled during a hand. The HIT
  109.     button will deal one card to the player. The STAND button will tell 
  110.     the dealer this    player is done and play will transfer to the next
  111.     player's hand. 
  112.  
  113.     The DOUBLE button will allow the player to double his/her bet and 
  114.     receive one card, and only one card. Play will then transfer to
  115.     the next player's hand.
  116.  
  117.     The SPLIT button will break a pair up into two hands. This is normally
  118.     allowed    on like pairs (8 and 8) or a pair of face cards (J and Q). 
  119.     When a hand is split, one card is moved to second hand (split hand) 
  120.     and the player must match the bet of the original hand. ULTIMA 21 
  121.     DELUXE handles all this for you automatically. 
  122.  
  123.     The other buttons on the screen and their functions are:
  124.  
  125.         BETS:    will prompt you for each player's bet and is available
  126.             only at the start of a new hand.
  127.  
  128.         SHUFFLE: will reshuffle the deck before the next hand. 
  129.  
  130.         PEEK:   will allow you to cheat and peek at the deck and see 
  131.             the next few cards to be dealt.
  132.  
  133.         STRATEGY: will access the playing strategy window where you may 
  134.             view, change, save, or load the playing strategy for
  135.             this table. The playing strategy is used in conjunction
  136.             with the automatic decision help. 
  137.  
  138.             A playing strategy consists of hit, stand, double, and
  139.             split rules for a player's hand based on what the 
  140.             dealer is showing in his hand. 
  141.  
  142.         EXIT:   will allow you quit playing ULTIMA 21 DELUXE.
  143.  
  144.         SPEED:  will access the set game speed window which allows you
  145.             to control how fast the cards are dealt by the dealer.
  146.  
  147.         STATS:  will display the current playing statistics for    each
  148.             player and for the dealer.
  149.  
  150.         COUNT:  will display the current card counts. This shows the
  151.             number of cards dealt (ace, two, three...) as well as 
  152.             other card counting information.
  153.  
  154.         SAVE:   will save the current game to disk.
  155.  
  156. SAVING & USING THE GAMES DEFAULT SETTINGS:
  157. =========================================
  158.     ULTIMA 21 DELUXE allows you to customize the table rules, number of 
  159.     players, bank balances, playing strategy, etc... Once you have the game
  160.     set up how you like to play, you may save these settings as the default 
  161.     for a new game. 
  162.  
  163.     To do so, click on the FILE menu & select the SAVE SETTINGS AS DEFAULT
  164.     option.    This will save the current settings into a disk file called 
  165.     "ULTIMA21.DEF". Each time a new game is started, ULTIMA 21 DELUXE will
  166.     read this file and set itself up according to what was saved in this 
  167.     file. 
  168.  
  169.     If ULTIMA 21 DELUXE cannot find this file, it will revert back to its
  170.     "factory" or internal settings.
  171.  
  172. ERRORS AT STARTUP
  173. =================
  174.     If you encounter either of the following two errors at startup:
  175.  
  176.         1) "OVERFLOW"
  177.         2) "Invalid Control Index"
  178.  
  179.     then the startup default game settings file ULTIMA21.DEF may be
  180.     corrupted or may be the wrong version. Try renaming this file to
  181.     something else and restarting ULTIMA 21. Ultima 21 will use its
  182.     own internal game settings since it will not be able to find this
  183.     file. 
  184.  
  185.     Once the game has started successfully, use the FILE MENU and select 
  186.     the option to save the current settings as the default for a new game.
  187.     This will create a valid (new) ULTIMA21.DEF file on disk.
  188.  
  189.     If you still have problems after trying this procedure, please contact

  193. SAVING AND RESUMING A GAME
  194. ===========================
  195.     ULTIMA 21 DELUXE allows you to save a game and resume playing it at a 
  196.     later time. This should not be confused with the saving of default 
  197.     settings explained above.
  198.     
  199.     Saving a game saves everything about the current game so you may 
  200.     resume playing where you left off at a later time. When you save a
  201.     game, it is normally stored in a disk file called "ULTIMA21.SAV".
  202.     However, ULTIMA 21 DELUXE allows you to save multiple games by 
  203.     allowing you to specify the save file name. 
  204.  
  205.     To save a game, click on the FILE menu and select either the SAVE 
  206.     or the SAVE AS option. The SAVE option will just save the current
  207.     game to the current game's save file name. Normally this is a file
  208.     called "ULTIMA21.SAV".
  209.  
  210.     If you choose the SAVE AS option, a file name prompt window will 
  211.     appear and you may select a file name you prefer. You will always be
  212.     required to enter a file extension of ".SAV".
  213.  
  214.     At any time, ULTIMA 21 DELUXE allows you to resume a previously saved
  215.     game by clicking on the FILE menu and selecting the RESUME GAME option.
  216.     ULTIMA 21 DELUXE will prompt you for the name of the save file you wish
  217.     to resume. The default is "ULTIMA21.SAV" but you select another save
  218.     file from the file list displayed. 
  219.  
  220. CHANGING PLAYING OPTIONS
  221. ========================
  222.     ULTIMA 21 DELUXE menu system (located at the top of the playing table)
  223.     allows you to change every aspect about the casino options, rules, 
  224.     table limits, player names, bank balances, card deck picture, playing
  225.     strategy, etc...
  226.  
  227.     The following items can be accessed from the FILE menu:
  228.  
  229.         a) Start a new game
  230.         b) Resume a previously saved game
  231.         c) Save the current game to disk in the default save file name.
  232.         d) Save the current game to disk in a selected save file name.
  233.         e) Save the current playing settings as the default for a new
  234.            game.
  235.         f) Exit the game.
  236.  
  237.     The following items can be accessed from the VIEW menu:
  238.  
  239.         a) View the players statistics
  240.         b) View the card count statistics
  241.         c) Peek at the next few cards to be dealt
  242.         
  243.     The following items can be changed from the OPTIONS menu:
  244.  
  245.         a) Double down rules
  246.         b) Surrender rules
  247.         c) Splitting pairs rules
  248.         d) Splitting aces rules
  249.         e) Dealer hitting soft 17 rules
  250.         f) Insurance options
  251.         g) Six card hand winner options
  252.         h) Hand totals display options
  253.         i) Dealer hole card display options
  254.         j) Speed of the game
  255.         k) Automatic decision help
  256.  
  257.     The following items can be changed from the SET menu:
  258.  
  259.         a) Table limits
  260.         b) Table color
  261.         c) Payoff amount for a blackjack 
  262.         d) Number of decks in play
  263.         e) Number of players at this table
  264.         f) Each player's name
  265.         g) Each player's bank balance
  266.         h) Card deck picture
  267.         i) Shuffle point
  268.         j) Number of cards to bury
  269.         k) Dealer first two cards each hand
  270.         l) player's first two cards each hand
  271.         m) playing strategy 
  272.  
  273.     In addition to using the menu system, you may also access and change 
  274.     most of these items by using the mouse and clicking on certain items
  275.     on the table. 
  276.  
  277.     Examples:
  278.         Clicking on a player's name, will display the change a player's 
  279.         window. 
  280.     
  281.         Clicking on a player's bet will access the Change Bet Window for
  282.         that player.
  283.  
  284.         Clicking on the "table limits" text in the game stats window 
  285.         will display the set table limits window.
  286.  
  287. AUTO DECISION HELP AND CUSTOM PLAYING STRATEGIES
  288. ================================================
  289.     When this feature is active (see the OPTIONS menu), the dealer will
  290.     help you make playing decisions. That is, the dealer will tell you 
  291.     whether you should hit, stand, double down, or split your hand. 
  292.  
  293.     These are only suggestions from the dealer and you may play your hand
  294.     anyway you would like. This feature is for practicing a strategy or 
  295.     designing and testing a new one. 
  296.  
  297.     Playing strategies are stored in disk files and are identified with 
  298.     the file extension ".SGY". The default strategy is located in the file
  299.     "ULTIMA21.SGY" and is found on the master diskettes you received. 
  300.  
  301.     When ULTIMA 21 DELUXE first starts, it attempts to load the default 
  302.     playing strategy from file "ULTIMA21.SGY". If it cannot this file, you
  303.     will have to access and set the playing strategy by clicking on the 
  304.     STRATEGY button    or using the SET menu and selecting the PLAYING 
  305.     STRATEGY option.
  306.  
  307.     The Set Playing Strategy Window allows you to view and change the 
  308.     current    playing strategy for this table. You can save the playing 
  309.     strategy changes to disk or you may load a previously save playing 
  310.     strategy from disk. Both the save and load features allow you specify
  311.     a file name.
  312.  
  313.     ULTIMA 21 DELUXE is very flexible and can help you build a winning 
  314.     strategy or practice your blackjack skills. 
  315.  
  316. GAME SPEED
  317. ==========
  318.     As with all windows applications, the faster your CPU and video card
  319.     are, the better the performance will be.
  320.  
  321.     ULTIMA 21 DELUXE's default game speed is designed to run on a 486-33
  322.     CPU with a VGA display. If you experience slow card dealing or slow
  323.     video performance, try changing the game speed to "medium" or "fast". 
  324.     This will improve the card dealing speed and improve some of the 
  325.     game's video performance. 
  326.  
  327.     This game is written in Visual Basic for Windows by Microsoft Version
  328.     3.0 and we have taken great care to get the maximum performance from
  329.     Visual Basic. However, some areas of Visual Basic, such as graphics 
  330.     display, are inherently slow, and our hands are tied (for now). 
  331.  
  332.     However, if the game is still too slow when you set the game speed to
  333.     "fast", contact us to see if we may have a faster version (If Visual
  334.     Basic has been upgraded and made faster by Microsoft). 
  335.

  338.     This windows game is the culmination of hundreds of suggestions and
  339.     comments from our very popular DOS version of ULTIMA 21 DELUXE. As you
  340.     can see, we have listened to those suggestions and implemented almost
  341.     every single one of them in this version for windows.
