New Generation Software (NGS)
Presents...
W i n R o a c h 2.0
An Entertaining Windows 3.0 program that delivers just what you would
expect:
Roaches, Roaches, everywhere... They scurry across the screen and hide
under windows. When they get in your way, use the mouse to "squash"
and "exterminate" those pesky roaches.
**************************************************************
* New To WinRoach 2.0 *
* *
* WinRoach 2.0 has an option to have Wandering Roaches. *
* Now roaches will wander out from behind windows. Now you *
* can just sit back and watch!!! *
**************************************************************
OVERVIEW
--------
This entertaining program will make closing and moving your windows a
treat. Why? Because every time you close or move a window, roaches
may become exposed, and just like real roaches, they'll want to run
and hide. When exposed, our roaches will immediately scurry to hide
behind the next active window. If they find another window to hide
under on the way to the active window, they'll hide under it.
As an added treat, our roaches will wander out from behind the windows
they are hiding. They will run out to the edge of the desktop, and
then they'll scurry back under a window. If the desktop is completely
covered with windows, the roaches will not be able to wander.
Just like real roaches, they vulnerable to being stepped on. Just
position the mouse pointer over the roach (if you can catch one) and
use the mouse button 1. If you hit one, you'll know it!
When the roaches are hidden there is no impact on system performance,
so you can afford to have this program up at all times to keep things
exciting when you close or move windows. If wandering roaches start
to impact system performance, simply increase the frequency to have
the roaches wander less frequently.
PACKAGE CONTENTS
----------------
WINROACH.ZIP contains the following files:
WINROACH.DOC Installation & User's Guide
WINROACH.EXE WinRoach Program
REGISTER.EXE Registration Program called by WINROACH.EXE
1
FEATURES
--------
* Ability to add up to 10 roaches that'll scurry under the active
window when exposed.
* Ability to set the default number of roaches that are created
at startup time.
* Ability to control the speed of the roaches via the Options
dialog.
* Ability to control how often roaches wander. To prevent the
roaches from wandering, just set the Wander Frequency to 0 in
the Option's dialog box.
* Ability to squash the pesky roaches using mouse button 1! By
placing the cursor over the roach and pressing mouse button 1,
"splat" goes the roach.
INSTALLATION
------------
WinRoach is easy to install. First, you will need to unzip the
WINROACH.ZIP file into a subdirectory (i.e. C:\WINDOWS). You will
need an unzipping utility, like PKUNZIP, to do this.
Once unzipped, you have two choices to get WinRoach up and running.
1. To allow WinRoach to run automatically every time you start
Windows, you will need to modify the WIN.INI file found in the
Windows subdirectory. By editing the line containing the LOAD
keyword, append the program name WINROACH.EXE.
For example: LOAD=C:\WINDOWS\WINROACH.EXE
The next time you start Windows, WinRoach will be started for you
automatically.
2. If you wish to start WinRoach manually, it would be best to
install WinRoach into a group menu of the Program Manager.
Choose 'New' off the 'File' Menu of the Program Manager (Refer to
the Windows' documentation on how to install programs within a
Group of the Program Manager).
2

USING WINROACH
--------------
What you will see...
When WinRoach is started, you will first see the WinRoach icon.
There is no window associated with this program. Shortly there
after, you may notice a number of roaches (four is the default)
have been placed randomly on the desktop.
If any of the roaches are exposed, they will immediately scurry
to hide behind the active window or icon. As time goes on, you
will notice some roaches wandering among the desktop.
WinRoach has a few menu items that will allow you change various
parameters. The WinRoach menu items have been placed in the
standard system menu. To bring up this menu, just position the
mouse pointer over the WinRoach icon and press the mouse
button 1.
WinRoach Menu Items
When you bring up WinRoach's system menu, you will notice a few
more items included with in the standard menu. Below is a
summary of what each new menu item performs.
The current WinRoach menu items are:
Add Roach This options creates another roach and places
it randomly upon the desktop (up to 10
roaches).
Delete Roach This option will delete a roach from the
desktop. It randomly picks which roach to
delete.
Options... This will bring up WinRoach's dialog box that
allows you set its various options. These
options include:
* The number of roaches that will appear when
WinRoach is started
* How fast the roaches will scurry
* How often the roaches will try to wander.
The options will be kept within WinRoach's
own WINROACH.INI file.
ReScatter This options rescatters all of the roaches
over the desktop. You can use this option if
you want to find the roaches without closing
or moving your windows.
About... This option brings up the About Box dialog
for WinRoach.
4
Setting WinRoach Options
WinRoach's Options dialog will allow you to set various
parameters that are used during the startup of WinRoach and while
it is running. These options will be kept in a file created
within you Windows subdirectory named WINROACH.INI.
WinRoach Options dialog is divided into two groups. The first
deals with the number of roaches that are created at startup
time, and the other deals with the roach's characteristics.
Default Number of Roaches: Initially, WinRoach is setup to
create four roaches. You can set the default startup count up to
ten roaches. The value will only take affect upon the next time
you startup WinRoach.
Roach Speed: This value indicates how fast the roaches will
scurry along the desktop. The value is in milliseconds which
means that the smaller the number the faster the roaches will
move. If you use the spin buttons next to the entry field, they
will increment or decrement the value in the entry field by 10
milliseconds.
Roach Wander Frequency: This value indicates how frequently the
roaches will wander from behind the window they are hiding. The
initial value is set to 15000 milliseconds which means that about
every 15 seconds, a roach has a chance of wandering. If you
would like to increase the chance of a roach wandering, decrease
this number. If you would like to prevent the roaches from
wandering, then simply set this number to 0 and the roaches will
stay put.
Killing a roach
As an added feature, we've added the ability to "squash" out
those pesky critters. If you position the mouse pointer over a
roach and press the mouse button 1, just be prepared if you hit
one. Remember, the faster they move, the faster it is to catch
them.
5
LICENSING AND DISTRIBUTION
--------------------------
WinRoach is copyright and has been released for distribution as
SHAREWARE. Please note that a great deal of effort and time has been
invested in the development of this program. You are granted a
license to try WinRoach for a reasonable trial period without risk.
If, after this time, you find this program useful and intend to use
it, you are expected to register. The base registration fee is
$12.95.
You will find a registration form at the end of this user's manual
that outlines the procedures for registering your copy of the program.
Please keep in mind that NGS must have a registration form on file for
you before any product support can be offered.
Operators of electronic bulletin boards (Sysops) are encouraged to
post WinRoach for downloading by their users. WinRoach may be
uploaded to and downloaded from commercial systems such as CompuServe,
the Source, and BIX. The only charge paid by the subscriber is for
on-line time and there is no charge for the program. Those copying,
sharing, or electronically transmitting the program are required not
to delete or modify the copyright notice and restrictive notices from
the program or documentation; anyone doing so will be treated as a
contributory copyright violator.
If you are passing this program on to others, uploading it to a
bulletin board system, or including it in a user's group library, do
not separate the files contained in the distribution archive - pass
the entire archive on to the intended party. This ensures that those
who receive the program will have all the correct configuration
utilities and documentation necessary to get WinRoach up and running
quickly. A listing of the files you should have and a description of
each is listed in a previous section of this document.
The WinRoach documentation may not be modified by users. The program
may not be separated from the documentation when distributed. Printed
or Photocopies ("Xeroxed") copies of the WinRoach documentation (i.e.,
this manual) may not be distributed or sold without the written
permission of the New Generation Software.
No other person other than NGS, may accept payment or royalties for
this program. This license to use WinRoach does NOT include the right
to distribute or sell WinRoach. Distribution terms are detailed on
the next page.
6
PUBLIC DOMAIN AND SHAREWARE
---------------------------
Distributors of "public domain" or user-supported software libraries
must obtain written permission to distribute copies of WinRoach. No
one may use WinRoach as a promotion for any commercial venture or as
an enticement for the user to pay for any program, product, or service
unless they have received the express written permission of NGS.
In order to distribute WinRoach, a dealer or disk vendor must comply
with the following conditions:
1. You must obtain written permission from NGS to distribute WinRoach.
Please use the vendor application supplied near the end of this user
manual. If you receive no reply, write again: Silence does NOT
constitute permission, and you may not distribute "pending" receipt of
permission.
2. A maximum disk fee as set by NGS in the vendor contract must not be
exceeded. WinRoach may not be included on any disk sold for more than
this maximum. Major CD-ROM or optical disk libraries are exempt from
this restriction, provided that they have NGS's permission to
distribute WinRoach.
3. Vendors may not modify or delete ANY files on the disk. Vendors may
add a "GO" program, or a reasonable number of small text files
designed to assist or provide a service to the user, but these added
files must be easily identifiable and end-users must be allowed to
delete the added files.
4. Vendors must make a reasonable effort to distribute only the
most recent versions of WinRoach. All vendors who have requested
and received written permission to distribute WinRoach will receive
new MAJOR releases as they are issued.
5. All disk vendors must comply with any and all vendor guidelines
vendor requirements set forth by the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP); for more information about ASP, contact its
chairman, Jim Button, at Buttonware in Seattle. Violation of any ASP
guideline or requirement automatically revokes permission to
distribute WinRoach.
Until formal requirements are adopted by the ASP, you must comply
with the following guidelines: Vendors must make an attempt to
educate users on the nature of Shareware. Catalogs,
advertisements, order forms, and all disks sold should contain
ASP-approved or recommended wording describing the nature of
shareware, and should explicitly state that no part of disk sale
revenues are paid to the programs' authors. When vendor catalogs
or advertisements carry both Shareware and PD programs, the
Shareware programs must be differentiated from the public domain
programs in some way (in the description, with an asterisk, by
listing the registration fee, etc.).

--------------------------------
In order that We can verify that you are a legitimate shareware vendor, We
request that you include a copy of your product catalog with this

approved, you will receive written permission from NGS to include WinRoach
in your library for distribution. Additionally, you will receive your
