  25. What is Informant?
  26. ------------------
  27. Informant is a MS-Windows performance meter that displays the load on your 
  28. system by way of a 3D-graph.  It's crammed with features and is simple to 
  29. use.  This document is meant to provide you with an understanding of some 
  30. of the key concepts behind Informant.  Since Informant is so easy to use,
  31. I will just cover how to get it up and running along with some things that
  32. might not be completely intuitive.

  35. Getting it running
  36. ------------------s
  37. There are many ways to get informant running:
  38.     Putting informant in Program Manager
  39.     1. Select a program group where you would like to place Informant.
  40.     2. Select "File" from the Program Manager menu.
  41.     3. Now choose "New..."
  42.     4. When the dialog box comes up select "OK" to create a new program
  43.        item.
  44.     5. Now you should see the "Program Item Properties" dialog box.
  45.     6. Fill in the information such as:
  46.        Description:       Informant
  47.        Command Line:      INFORM.EXE
  48.        Working Directory: DRIVE:\PATH (i.e: C:\WINDOWS)
  49.     7. Once you're done, select "OK."
  50.     8. Now you're all set!  Just double click on the icon!
  51.     9. If you want Informant to run when you enter Windows just drag 
  52.        the icon into the "Startup" program group.

  55. What it displays
  56. ----------------
  57. Informant displays, in graph form, the amount of work your computer is 
  58. doing.  When you see the graph go up, your computer is working hard to do 
  59. something.  You will notice that when your computer is sluggish the graph 
  60. will climb.  Below is a simple explanation:
  61.  
  62. High load: This is when your computer is doing something which causes 
  63.            it to feel sluggish. For example: you save a file, calculate 
  64.        something in a spread sheet program or print a document like
  65.        this one.
  66. Low load:  When your computer is running at this level, it is very 
  67.            responsive to your commands.

  70. Why use Informant
  71. -----------------
  72. Informant can be useful in a lot of ways.  Informant allows you to monitor 
  73. exactly how hard your computer is working.  This can be helpful for 
  74. evaluating programs and how much load they put on the system.  For example: 
  75. If you run Terminal, you will notice a fairly high load. Given this
  76. information, you may decide not to print a document because it could take 
  77. longer than without Terminal running.  Besides, Informant is nice to look at!

  80. Things to know
  81. --------------
  82. Changing the window style (with and without borders/title)
  83.         Beside selecting what you want in the configuration dialog box 
  84.         you can:
  85.         - Press the "ESC" key to cycle through the different window styles.
  86.         - Double click with the left mouse button on the graph to cycle 
  87.           through the different window styles.
  88. Getting the configuration box
  89.         Beside selecting "Preferences..." from the system menu you can also 
  90.         double click with the right mouse button on the graph to get the 
  91.         configuration dialog box. This is handy when you have the window 
  92.         title off.
  93. Moving the window
  94.         Informant can be moved simply by holding the mouse anywhere on the
  95.         graph and dragging it to the desired position.

  98. Registering
  99. -----------
  100. This program is POSTCARD-WARE.  Yup, that's right you gotta send me a
  101. postcard (or a letter or even e-mail) to the address above.  I have spent a 
  102. lot of time on this program and I would really like to know whether people 
  103. enjoy using it. Even if you don't like what I've done, let me know why.

  106. Version history

  108. * Version 1.00 (BETA 1)
  109.         The first public release to get ideas and comments.

  112.         Many people sent me feedback (only e-mail though) about what they 
  113.         wanted Informant to have.  This version includes most of their 
  114.         suggestions and desires, as well as some bug fixes and a few ideas 
  115.         I had.

  117.         Bugs that were fixed:
  118.                 - Informant couldn't be restored from an icon when put on 
  119.                   the load line.
  120.                 - When minimized, if you dragged the icon you got a blank 
  121.                   cursor.
  122.                 - Stopped dialogs from maxing out the graph. (Except for 
  123.                   the color selection box, sorry...)

  125.         New Features:
  126.                 - Changed the logo screen (nicer picture).
  127.                 - Allowed the user to stop the logo from coming up at 
  128.                   startup.
  129.                 - Added a completely new look to the dialog boxes.
  130.                 - Added the ability to calibrate the graph to the speed of 
  131.                   the computer.
  132.                 - Improved overall accuracy.
  133.                 - Improved the efficiency of graphing.
  134.                 - Window position is saved when program is closed (if you 
  135.                   what it to be).
  136.                 - Added some sample colors in the select colors dialog box.
  137.                 - Added another window style "No caption and no borders."
  138.                 - Update color changes to the graph from inside the config 
  139.                   box.
  140.                 - When moving the window, you can see it literally move with
  141.                   the mouse. (Instead of moving the frame around, you 
  142.                   actually move the window around.)  Nothing earth shattering
  143.                   but kinda neat.  Thanks goes out to my boss for 
  144.                   implementing this first in one of his programs.

  146. * Version 1.00 (the real thing)
  147.         Since I only have one more semester of school, I better hit the 
  148.         books a little more, not to mention work more (Chistmas is coming).
  149.         So, in other words, I have to finish this thing!

  151.         Bugs that were fixed:
  152.                 - Lotus Notes doesn't seem to like informant.  (I heard 
  153.                   this but could not reproduce it)  I think I solved the 
  154.                   problem, though.

  156.         Changes:
  157.                 - Some features that were grayed out in the dialog boxes
  158.                   were removed due to the amount of work I have in school.

  161.         Oops! I made a very little change to the code before releasing it. 
  162.         ("Why bother testing, It's such a small change." WRONG!)

  165.                 - Fixed a bug that caused the calibration dialog box from comming up.

  188. Just because I have decided to finish this program doesn't mean I'm just 
  189. going to drop it! Maintaining a program is a very important thing.  If you 
  190. find a bug (of any degree!) PLEASE let me know as soon as possible, and I 
  191. will fix it!
