  4. COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GAME
  5.  
  6. Question:   Why is the resolution poor?
  7. Answer:     This is due to a number of reasons:
  8.             1.  The CD ROM cannot handle the data transfer rate needed to
  9.                 keep up a sharper image. 
  10.             2.  The computer has other tasks to perform during game play so
  11.                 it cannot dedicate itself to the video display.
  12.  
  13.             note: The pixel resolution inside the frame box is 
  14.                about 298 x 186.

  17. TROUBLE SHOOTING WHO SHOT JOHNNY ROCK FOR THE IBM PC AND COMPATIBLES:
  18.  
  19. Before you start:
  20.         Make sure your sound card is properly set up in Sound Blaster
  21.         mode or emulation by:
  22.              consulting your sound card installation manuals or
  23.              contacting the manufacturer of your sound card
  24.  
  25.         Unless you have a Sound Blaster card or KNOW for a FACT that
  26.         your sound card is set up properly, do not assume it is properly
  27.         configured just because 'everything else works on it.'
  28.  
  29.         Also, make sure that your CD ROM is meeting the minimum requirements
  30.         of the game. That is: a seek time of 380 ms and a data tranfer
  31.         rate of 150 kbs sustained or continuous.
  32.    
  33.    Available sound card setting:
  34.      These are the settings supported by Who Shot Johnny Rock:
  35.        Address':  no sound, 220, 240
  36.        IRQ:  2, 5, 7, 10
  37.        DMA:  0, 1, 3
  38.  
  39.      Note: Although Who Shot Johnny Rock supports these settings, your Sound Blaster 
  40.            compatible card may be restricted in its settings for sound blaster
  41.            support. Consult your sound card manual for further information.
  42.

  44.    SOUND CARDS:
  45.      Pro Audio Spectrum 16:
  46.          config.sys
  47.            1. look for the device line that specifies the 'mvsound' driver.
  48.            2. write down the Q value. the Q is the IRQ value.
  49.            3. see if there is a 's:' parameter.
  50.                if there is one, the order is:  s:T,Address,DMA,IRQ
  51.                The IRQ must be a different value than the 'Q' value.
  52.          
  53.          autoexec.bat
  54.            1. look for a SET BLASTER statement.
  55.               if not found, then put in the statement before your other
  56.               drivers:  SET BLASTER=A? I? D1 T1
  57.            2. set address (A) to the same value as the your pro audio card.
  58.               set the IRQ (I) to a different value than your pro audio card.
  59.               set the DMA (D) to 1 (one), this is the only DMA channel the 
  60.                 pro audio card will support Sound Blaster applications.
  61.               set the T to the same as the 's' parameter. if there was no
  62.                 's' parameter, then set it to one (1).

  64.          Who Shot Johnny Rock game
  65.            1. reboot computer
  66.            2. reinstall the Who Shot Johnny Rock game.
  67.      
  68.  A NOTE TO TANDY SENSATION USERS:
  69.      To get sound:  
  70.        1. go into windows
  71.        2. goto to the traditional MicroSoft windows screen
  72.        3. double click 'main' icon
  73.        4. double click 'ms dos prompt' icon
  74.        5. run game as if you were in DOS
  75.

  77.  A NOTE TO MICROSOFT WINDOWS USERS:
  78.      Who Shot Johnny Rock is designed strictly for the 
  79.        DOS operating system environment. 
  80.        DO NOT run the game in windows or from windows using the
  81.        MS DOS PROMPT.

  84. PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS:
  85.  
  86. Problem:   video stops and/or sound stops
  87. Solution: a) video and sound stop:
  88.            1.  Re-run the Who Shot Johnny Rock installation program.
  89.            2.  Click CANCEL on all options until no options are displayed.
  90.            3.  Select OPTIONS from the menu bar.
  91.            4.  Select SOUND from the sub-menu.
  92.            5.  In the dialog box, select the appropriate address, IRQ, and
  93.                DMA channels that concur with your sound card's Sound Blaster
  94.                mode or emulation settings.  Then click on the OK button.
  95.            6.  Then click OK to finish the installation, or click CANCEL, then
  96.                select FILE from the menu bar and click INSTALL. 
  97.           b) no sound only:
  98.            1. refere to problem:  no use of the mouse in Who Shot Johnny Rock game-play
  99.            2. there may not be enough conventianal memory available.
  100.               try to free up more conventional memory. you will need at
  101.               least 512 thousand bytes.

  104. Problem:   no video inside frame box
  105. Solution:  Sound card address, IRQ, and DMA values are of different values 
  106.            than the Who Shot Johnny Rock configuration file.  See above problem for 
  107.            solution:    video stops and/or no sound
  108.

  110. Problem:   video is slow and sound is choppy at the beginning of each scene
  111. Solution:  1. A memory manager can sometimes cause performance degradation
  112.             that can cause the sound to break up, so try removing it from
  113.             your config.sys.  Unfortunately, sometimes video cards and/or
  114.             CD ROM drives are not fast enough, and the game will break-up
  115.             the sound to keep the video in synchronization with the sound.
  116.            2. create a MS DOS boot disk.
  117.                1. put a new diskette into drive A.
  118.                2. at the C prompt, type:  FORMAT A: /S [ENTER]
  119.                3. after formating, copy your config.sys and autoexec.bat
  120.                   files to the boot disk in the drive A.
  121.                4. edit those files on the boot disk, deleting everything
  122.                   that is not necessary to run the game.
  123.                5. reboot the computer with the boot disk and play the game.

  126. Problem:   no use of the mouse in Who Shot Johnny Rock game-play or
  127.            the game locks up as soon as I touch the mouse
  128. Solution:  Your mouse driver is the probable cause.  For proper game play
  129.            operation, your mouse driver needs to be 100% Microsoft or
  130.            Logitec compatible.

  133. Problem:   error message when loading game:
  134.              scene data corrupt...
  135. Solution:  A bad Who Shot Johnny Rock CD ROM disk is the probable cause.
  136.            Return the disk at the purchased location for an exchange.

  139. Problem:   error message when loading game:
  140.              cannot open file \jrplay\blow.8b, sound file missing
  141. Solution:  This error message comes from running the game from the CD ROM.
  142.            The proper location to begin execution of the game is from
  143.            the johnroc subdirectory on your hard drive.
  144.            At the command prompt, type:
  145.                 [drive]:   [enter]
  146.                 cd johnroc [enter]
  147.                 johnroc    [enter]

  150. Problem:   I own a Sound Blaster ASP16 or 16 and there is a clicking sound in 
  151.            the background.
  152. Solution:  The wrong johnroc executible file is being accessed on your CD ROM.
  153.            1.  Re-run the Who Shot Johnny Rock installation program.
  154.            2.  Click CANCEL all options until no options are displayed.
  155.            3.  Select OPTIONS from the menu bar.
  156.            4.  Select SOUND from the sub-menu.
  157.            5.  In the dialog box, select the appropriate address, IRQ, and
  158.                DMA channels for your sound card, and select Sound Blaster 16
  159.                in the card type.  Then click on the OK button.
  160.            6.  Then click OK to finish the installation, or click CANCEL, then
  161.                select FILE from the menu bar and click INSTALL.

  164. Problem:   my problem isn't listed
  165. Solution:  give technical support a call.
  166.            before calling though, have the following information available:
  167.            1. printouts of your config.sys and autoexec.bat files
  168.            2. the brand of sound card, CD ROM, and mouse driver you have.
  169.            3. a list of other equipment on your computer: i.e. scanner,
  170.               modem, tape backup, etc.
  171.
