  19.  I. Installing to Windows 95
  20.  
  21.    A.Run Install from DISK1
  22.  
  23.     1.Standard Installation assumes that you are installing the AppleTalk
  24.           stack to connect to an Ethernet or Token-Ring network.
  25.  
  26.     2.To install Personal MACLAN Connect onto a LocalTalk network,
  27.       select Custom Installation and check the Network Transport option.
  28.       This will give you the opportunity to add an ODI adapter.
  29.  
  30.     3.After installing Personal MACLAN Connect, the AppleTalk protocol
  31.           stack needs to be entered into the Windows 95 registry.  The
  32.           installer will do this for you.  Do not reboot your system until
  33.           after this has been accomplished.
  34.  
  35.    B.If the protocol and client get removed from the Network Control Panel
  36.      applet follow the steps listed below to setup the AppleTalk protocol
  37.          and client for Ethernet or Token-ring networks:
  38.  
  39.     1.Select the CONTROL PANEL from your computer
  40.  
  41.     2.Select the Network ICON
  42.     
  43.     3.Select the ADD button
  44.  
  45.     4.Select Adapter (if there is one previously installed skip to #9)
  46.  
  47.     5.From the manufacturer list choose your ethernet card's maker
  48.  
  49.     6.From the list of adapters select the adapter you installed
  50.  
  51.     7.Select OK
  52.  
  53.     8.If you do not wish to connect to other PCs, remove the two Microsoft
  54.       clients and the IPX/SPX protocol and the NETBEUI protocol
  55.  
  56.     9.Select Add
  57.  
  58.     10.Select Protocol 
  59.  
  60.     11.Select ADD 
  61.  
  62.     12.Under Manufacturers List box choose Miramar Systems, Inc.
  63.  
  64.     13.Select the Miramar Systems AppleTalk v6.0 using NDIS3 protocol and
  65.        press OK

  67.     14.Select the ADD button

  69.     15.Select Client

  104.     11.Under Manufacturers List box choose Miramar Systems, Inc.

  106.     12.Select the Miramar Systems AppleTalk v6.0 using ODI protocol and

  124.  IIa. Upgrading from Personal MACLAN v5.5x to v6.1
  125.  
  126.  Please remove the File Server and Print Server from the Start-up Group prior
  127.  to upgrading.
  128.  
  129.  You do not need to uninstall v5.5x from Windows 95 prior to installing.
  130.  
  131.  The File Server database in Personal MACLAN version 5.5x for Windows 95 is
  132.  not compatible with version 6.1.  During installation the installer will
  133.  detect the location of the previous version and will create backup files
  134.  (extension .BAK).  The first time the File Server is run, these .BAK files
  135.  will be converted to the new database format which supports Long File Names.
  136.  
  137.  IIb. Upgrading from PC MACLAN v6.0x to v6.1
  138.  
  139.  Please remove the File Server and Print Server from the Start-up Group prior
  140.  to upgrading.
  141.  
  142.  You do not need to uninstall v6.0 from Windows 95 prior to re-installing.
  143.  
  144.  You will need to run the backup utility on the File server to prevent the
  145.  loss of Longname and resource information on Macintosh files stored on PC
  146.  volumes. Before performing the upgrade, if you use the File Server to save 
  147.  Macintosh files on your PC, you must backup the server system files.  From
  148.  the Server menu, select Backup System files and change the destination
  149.  directory to any directory other than "." or "MACLAN6."  After completing
  150.  the upgrade, copy the .BAK files to the MACLAN6 directory and change the
  151.  extension to .DAT.  The next time the server is run the system files will
  152.  be reported as corrupt and a rebuild will be requested.  This is normal.
  153.  
  154.  If you are upgrading from a beta release of PC MACLAN v6.0, due to changes
  155.  to the UNC path structure, you must delete your AppleTalk network printers
  156.  before attempting to print.  Re-establish your printers by double clicking
  157.  the printer from the Network Neighborhood or by browsing in the Add Printer
  158.  wizard.

  160. =============================================================================
  161.  III. Unlisted Adapters information
  162.  
  163.   If you have a Network adapter that was not listed during Install then 
  164.   you will need to determine whether it came with NDIS or ODI drivers.
  165.  
  166.   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  167.   A.For ODI unlisted adapters
  168.  
  169.   If you cannot locate your specific network adapter from the Install 
  170.   "Adapter selection list" perform the following STEPS:
  171.  
  172.     1.Locate the ODI driver on the disk that came with your adapter.
  173.       (XXXXXXXX.COM)
  174.  
  175.     2.Copy the ODI driver file into the PC MACLAN Installation
  176.       directory.
  177.             Ex: Copy A:\ODI\XXXXXXXX.COM C:\MACLAN6
  178.     
  179.     3.Run INSTALL, select Custom install and check the Network Transport
  180.        checkbox. From the Select Network Adapters and select UNLISTED
  181.        adapter from the NET CARD list.
  182.  
  183.     4.After INSTALL  use a text editor like NOTEPAD and edit the NET.CFG
  184.        file located in the PC MACLAN Installation directory and change all
  185.        XXXXX text to the name of your ODI driver.
  186.  
  187.     5.Using a text editor, edit the ATDRIVER.BAT file located in the PC
  188.        MACLAN Installation directory & change XXXXX text to the name of
  189.        your ODI driver.
  190.  
  191.   If your adapter has settings such as different interrupts, DMA, Memory 
  192.   Address, Port Address than those presented during installation it maybe
  193.   necessary to edit the NET.CFG file located in the PMACLAN5 directory.

  216.   For Token-ring, change all "ETHERNET..." text to "TOKEN-RING..." for example:
  217.   instead of "FRAME ETHERNET_SNAP" enter "FRAME TOKEN-RING_SNAP"

  219.   B.For NDIS3 unlisted adapters. 
  220.   
  221.     1.Run the Network Applet from Windows 95 Control Panel. 
  222.  
  223.     2.Select Add 
  224.  
  225.     3.Select Add adapter to see if your Network adapter is listed. If it's
  226.       unlisted follow the manufacturers' directions on installing NDIS3 
  227.       drivers for Windows95.
  228.  
  229.     4.If you find your adapter, select it.
  230.            
  231.     5.If you do not need to connect to other PCs or to Netware servers,
  232.       remove the Netbeui and IPX/SPX protocols.
  233.  
  234.         Be sure to check your Windows 95 documentation for details.
  235.  
  236. =============================================================================
  237. IV. ERRORS during INSTALLATION
  238.  
  239.   1.Personal MACLAN may have detected incompatible AppleTalk drivers on    your
  240.     system.  Please remove all items as listed below from your system
  241.     files.
  242.  
  243.     Install reports "Found Farallon"
  244.  
  245.     IN AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  246.             "aboth.bat"  may appear as "call ABOTH.BAT"
  247.             "aprint.bat" may appear as "call APRINT.BAT"
  248.             "afiles.bat" may appear as "call AFILES.BAT"
  249.             "aarp.com"
  250.             "atalk.com"
  251.             "pntvdd.exe"
  252.   
  253.     IN FILE DIRECTORIES
  254.     Locate your "c:\phonenet" directory and rename "net.cfg" to "net.xxx".
  255.  
  256.     IN SYSTEM.INI
  257.     Edit & remove: "PhoneNETMemoryPool" statement from the "386Enh" section
  258.  
  259.   2. Personal MACLAN has detected a previous installation. Drivers are
  260.     incompatible with version 6.0
  261.  
  262.     Found earlier version MACLAN Connect/Personal MACLAN
  263.     IN AUTOEXEC.BAT
  264.                      ATDRIVER.BAT        
  265.                      MLDRIVER.BAT
  266.                      LMSTART.BAT
  267.  
  268.   3. Personal MACLAN has detected AppleShare for Windows installation. This 
  269.         is compatible with Personal MACLAN versions 6.0
  270.  
  271.     Found AppleShare
  272.     IN AUTOEXEC.BAT            "ATDRIVER.BAT"
  273.                     
  274.   4. Norton Navigator
  275.     Disable Norton Navigator before installing as it will prevent
  276.         installation.  You can enable it after Install has completed.
  277.  
  278.   5. The AppleTalk driver was not found.
  279.     The file server or print server are in the start-up group.  These must
  280.     be removed before upgrading to PC MACLAN v6.1.
  281.  
  282. =============================================================================
  283. V. ERRORS during system OPERATION
  284.   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  285.   1. "Need to run LSL.COM"
  286.     This error will occur if you are running Novell Netware and Install
  287.     detected LSL.COM in system memory.
  288.  
  289.     FIX:  Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT and move the "CALL <path>\ATDRIVER.BAT" 
  290.     statement AFTER the line(s) that execute the LSL and MLID 
  291.     statements.
  292.  
  293.     Example:
  294.         Before  CALL ATDRIVER.BAT
  295.             PATH C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS
  296.             C:\NETWARE\LSL
  297.             C:\NETWARE\3C5X9
  298.             etc....
  299.  
  300.         After   PATH C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS
  301.             C:\NETWARE\LSL
  302.             C:\NETWARE\3C5X9
  303.             CALL ATDRIVER.BAT
  304.             etc....
  305.     
  306.     NOTE:All network device drivers are provided for the exclusive use of
  307.     Personal MACLAN Connect using the manufacturer's proprietary network 
  308.     adapters. Using a manufacturer's network drivers with another manufac-
  309.     turers' network adapter is strictly prohibited.
  310.  
  311.   2. "Access Denied"
  312.         This error may occur when a file is copied to a "Drop Box" from a DOS
  313.     box.  The operating system attempts to set the time/date of the file
  314.     to its original value after the file has been successfully copied.
  315.     This operation fails and the system returns the error condition.  The
  316.     file has been copied to the "Drop Box" but has the current time/date.
  317.  
  318.   3.    To browse for network printers from within the Add Printer wizard 
  319.         you'll need to get and install the Win 95 Service Pack.
  320.  
  321.   4.    "File not found" errors:
  322.         Macintosh folders containing a '\' (i.e. backslash) cannot be  accessed
  323.         correctly.
  324.  
  325. ==============================================================================
  326.  
  327. VI. Incompatible Adapters (ODI & NDIS3)
  328.  
  329.   Some older adapters have not had their ODI driver updated by the manufacturer
  330.   and have become out of spec to the current requirements of ODI and NDIS3.
  331.   The following list contains the adapter, the problem you may experience and
  332.   a possible workaround.
  333.  
  334.   NE1000                  
  335.   Problem:    Incompatible, obsolete drivers.
  336.   solution:   None
  337.  
  338.   INTEL ETHER EXPRESS PRO  
  339.   Problem:    Windows freezes at splash/intro screen
  340.           Windows freezes on re-entry after closing
  341.  
  342.   Solution:  1.If running Windows for WorkGroups select the ODI protocol
  343.              2.Obtain the latest NDIS3 driver. 
  344.  
  345.   APPLE LOCALTALK
  346.   Problem:   Incompatible, obsolete drivers.
  347.   Solution:  Use an Apexx PCTALK adapter instead.
  348.  
  349.   TOPS/SITKA CARDS
  350.   Problem:   Incompatible, obsolete drivers.
  351.   solution:  Use an Apexx PCTALK adapter instead.
  352.  
  353.   SMC 8216
  354.   Problem:   Can cause a Page Fault (Blank screen with flashing cursor) if
  355.                  the cable is disconnected from adapter during a file copy.
  356.   Solution:  Obtain the latest NDIS3 drivers from SMC. ODI does not have
  357.                  this problem.

  359. =============================================================================
  360. VII. Performance Issues
  361.  
  362.   Some network adapters drivers may not perform to your expectations.  Miramar 
  363.   recommends that you always use the latest drivers available from the 
  364.   manufacturer.
  365.  
  366.   Make sure that there are no conlicts with Memory, Interrupts, DMA etc... 
  367.   as this can also cause poor performance.  The higher the CPU power the 
  368.   better Personal MACLAN will perform.
  369.

  371. VIII.Uninstalling from Windows 95
  372.  
  373.    To Uninstall from Windows 95:
  374.  
  375.    1.Throw away any shortcuts to PC MACLAN executables.
  376.  
  377.    2.Delete any network printers connected via AppleTalk 
  378.  
  379.    3.Run the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel, select
  380.          PC MACLAN v6.1 and press the Add/Remove button.  When requested,
  381.          place disk 1 into the specified drive and select Uninstall.
  382.  
  383.    4.When asked to restart your computer, select "Yes" then remove disk 1.
  384.  
  385.    5.When "Starting Windows95 ..." is seen on the monitor, re-insert disk 1
