  95.  This package contains Quiz Machine 2.5 (C) by Pepys Ltd. 1994 together
  96.  with its own sophisticated installation and distribution program.

  98.  This section of the document contains only a brief description of the
  99.  package and its features, along with instructions for its installation.

  101.  If you've ever wished you could play one of those General Knowledge
  102.  Quiz Machines found in Pubs, Clubs and Bars the world over without
  103.  losing a dime then this is the program for you...
  104.  
  105.  Quiz Machine is designed to emulate such a typical quiz machine found
  106.  in a Pubs and Bars.  The advantage is that this one does not gobble
  107.  your money!  It is a Windows program requiring Version 3.1.
  108.  
  109.  Use of the program should be intuitive to existing Windows users.
  110.  Quite detailed help is contained within the program.  Further
  111.  information can be found in the section labelled:

  116.  Quiz Machine is a shareware program released with demonstration
  117.  question files.  This evaluation version includes all features of the
  118.  program, and is not crippled in any way.  You may use it for as long as
  119.  you wish without charge.  If you like the program, you will soon learn
  120.  the answers to all the 320 questions included in the demonstration!
  121.  You are then welcome to order a registered version which comes complete
  122.  with a large question file of your choice containing 1500-2000
  123.  questions, which will be much more difficult to master!

  125.  Any fee you may have paid to others (disk vendors, dealers, etc.) to
  126.  obtain this evaluation version was a fee for their copying and
  127.  distribution services, rather than a payment for continued use of the
  128.  program.

  130. THE INSTALLATION PROGRAM
  131.  
  132.  The package also contains our own FREEWARE installation program:

  136.  This is a generic Windows installation program which can install any of
  137.  our packages (and those of any other author, vendor or distributor who
  138.  wishes to purchase it).  It can also be used to create a distribution
  139.  diskette from your hard disk, and is self-propogating, working
  140.  alongside VENDINFO.DIZ.

  142.  The install program is self-documenting: see the installation
  143.  instructions section below on how to use it.

  145.  PEPYIN30.EXE is documented in its own VENDINFO.DIZ file; however, to
  146.  avoid conflict with QUIZ MACHINE's own file, it may be temporarily

  182. ===== Installation =====================================
  183.  
  184.  The installation procedure for Quiz Machine is very simple.  The
  185.  package includes a program, "PEPYIN30.EXE", which automates the entire
  186.  process.  You will need about 700K of available disk space on the hard
  187.  drive on which you plan to install Quiz Machine.  If the Visual Basic 3
  188.  DLL: VBRUN300.DLL is already installed on your system then this
  189.  requirement reduces to 300K.
  190.  
  191.  The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received Quiz
  192.  Machine.
  193.  
  194. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
  195.  
  196.  To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
  197.  
  198.    1  Place the Quiz Machine distribution diskette in the appropriate
  199.       diskette drive.
  200.  
  201.    2  Load Windows and go to File Manager
  202.  
  203.    3  Run the "PEPYIN30.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
  204.       For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A then
  205.       issue the following command:  FILE, RUN, a:pepyin30, or double
  206.       click on the program in the a: drive directory listing.
  207.  
  208.    4  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  209.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  210.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.  The program
  211.       will ask you for a destination drive and directory (after
  212.       suggesting defaults) and will copy the Quiz Machine files to that
  213.       directory.  If you so direct it, the installation program
  214.       will install Quiz Machine in other drives\directories of your
  215.       choice.  It will make no other changes; specifically, it will not
  216.       modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
  217.  
  218. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  219.  
  220.  If you downloaded <product> from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  221.  archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  222.  following steps.
  223.  
  224.    1  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  225.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  226.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  227.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  228.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  229.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  230.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  231.       the package.
  232.  
  233.    2  Load Windows and go to File Manager
  234.  
  235.    3  Execute the "PEPYIN30.EXE" program which you have extracted.
  236.       For example, if the temporary directory into which you have
  237.       extracted the Quiz Machine is C:\TEMPDIR, you would issue the
  238.       following command in File Manager: FILE, RUN,
  239.       "c:\tempdir\pepyin30" or to double click on the filename
  240.       "pepyin30.exe" in the c:\tempdir directory listing.

  242.    4  Follow Step 4 as for INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES above

  244.    5  When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you
  245.       should delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed
  246.       Quiz Machine (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all
  247.       its contents.

  249. YOU'RE READY TO GO
  250.  
  251.  Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the other
  252.  sections of VENDINFO.DIZ, which contains all relevant documentation .
  253.  In particular, read at least the "Quick Start" and "Using Quiz
  254.  Machine" headings of the 'OTHER INFORMATION' partition of VENDINFO
  255.  That documentation will tell you how to invoke the program, and will

  286.  To use the installed program run the quizmc25.exe on your hard disk
  287.  from either Program or File Manager, using the Run command.

  289.  To make it easier to access you can set up a program item icon for it.
  290.  To do this choose 'New' from under the Program Manager 'File' menu
  291.  heading, press OK for Program Item, and then use the Browse facility to
  292.  find quizmc25.exe in the directory you have installed it to.  Add a
  293.  description (eg, Quiz Machine) and press OK.

  298.  Use of the program should be intuitive to existing Windows users. After
  299.  the welcome window the main window allows the user to:

  310.  ** STARTING A QUIZ **

  313.  In order to successfully start a quiz, you must first select a quiz and
  314.  a player in the selection boxes at the top of the window.  You do not
  315.  have have to accept the default player names: you may add your own
  316.  and other peoples' names.
  317.

  319.  ** DOING A QUIZ **
  320.  ******************

  322.  Having selected to start a quiz, the main QUIZ window then comes up.
  323.  This comprises 4 main elements:
  324.  
  325.  *    The quiz topic 'route' box at the bottom - You have control over
  326.       the categories of question you have to answer.
  327.  
  328.  *    Quiz information on scores and level of difficulty in the bottom
  329.       left hand corner
  330.  
  331.  *    Timing bar on the top left - only a limited amount of time is
  332.       allowed to answer each question.
  333.  
  334. *     The main question and answer box.  Once a question category has
  335.       been selected, a question with 3 to 5 multiple choice answers
  336.       appear. Each multiple choice answer has a button beside it to be
  337.       pressed to select the chosen answer.
  338.  
  339.  As you play the game you will find that you are allowed a given number
  340.  of attempts (and time) at answering each question - the number of tries
  341.  depends on the number of multiple choices and the level of difficulty.
  342.  
  343.  Your score will increment as you correctly answer questions.   You will
  344.  find that the fewer the number of incorrect attempts and the quicker
  345.  you answer the questions the greater the score you will get.
  346.  
  347.  The game continues without interruption providing that you answer
  348.  questions correctly.  However, if you answer a given number of
  349.  consecutive questions incorrectly then the game ends.
  350.  
  351.  Also, you will find that at certain break points, your playing level of
  352.  difficulty will get harder as follows:
  353.  
  354.  *    2000 points - advance to Testing
  355.  *    4000 points - advance to Challenging
  356.  *    6000 points - advance to Deadly
  357.  
  358.  This means that:
  359.  
  360.  *    Questions print out quicker
  361.  *    Less time is allowed to answer
  362.  *    Less wrong attempts at answering each question are allowed
  363.       (Dependent on the number of multiple choices offered)
  364.  *    Less questions can be answered incorrectly before the game ends.
  365.       Kindergarten - 4 wrong questions
  366.       Testing      - 3 wrong questions
  367.       Challenging  - 2 wrong questions
  368.       Deadly       - One Wrong and You're Out !

  370.  You may quit a quiz at any time; this takes you back to the main window.

  372.  You can then choose to do another quiz, or to Quit Quiz Machine.

  469.  tabulated paper format in exchange for your questions typed in the
  470.  specified format. Any number of questions from between 100 and 1000
  471.  would be interesting.

  485.  Whilst Quiz Machine is a literally a piece of 'Trivia' (pun!), we think
  486.  that authors, vendors and distributors of Windows software should look
  487.  at our installation program.  This is a generic piece of Windows
  488.  software which can be used to install any application.  It has the
  489.  added advantage of also being used to create a distribution diskette
  490.  from a hard disk installation.
