  8.                   Now, run any command when Windows exits...
  9.  
  10. As  always, my best ideas come from you, the readers. The latest evidence  of 
  11. this is a suggestion from reader Brian Wells, which I reported in my Oct.  10, 
  12. 1994, column, that Windows should have a ShutDown group in Program Manager, as 
  13. well as a StartUp group. Now, an enterprising developer has fulfilled  Wells' 
  14. idea and my request for just such a utility.
  15.  
  16. The StartUp group, as you know, automatically loads or runs any icons found in 
  17. that  group window every time Windows is launched. Each icon may contain  any 
  18. command line, including DOS programs, Windows programs, Windows batch language 
  19. commands (such as WinBatch, a shareware program found in Windows 3.1 Secrets), 
  20. and so on.

  22. Now, a new utility called WrapUp gives you the same ability when Windows heads 
  23. for the door.

  25. The  program's author, Gary Tessler of Tessler's Nifty Tools  (TNT),  suggests 
  26. many handy ways you can put this tool to work for you:
  27.  
  28.      *  You  can  start  a  program  to  back  up  your  hard  disk 
  29.      automatically,at a time when it can't interfere with any other 
  30.      running applications. 
  31.      *  You  can log out of your network.
  32.      *  You can synchronize your desktop PC's hard disk  with  your 
  33.      laptop  or  vice versa.
  34.      * You can run a stock-quote system and check on your  favorite 
  35.      stock  prices.
  36.      *  You  can  send E-mail messages to  one  person  or  several 
  37.      people.
  38.      *  You  can  use a communications program  to  auto-dial  your 
  39.      significant  other, saying that you're leaving the office  and 
  40.      will be home soon.

  42. Naturally,  you could run any of these programs  manually  whenever 
  43. you feel like it. But many people who use Windows like to automate 
  44. little  things  like  these whenever they can.  And  that's  where 
  45. WrapUp  comes  in. Whether it's one big task or a  lot  of  little 
  46. tasks  you wish to run at the end of every day, WrapUp makes it  as 
  47. easy to automate as dragging an icon into a Program Manager group.

  49. Using WrapUp involves only a few simple steps:
  50.      1. After installing WrapUp, drag the file wrapup.exe into  the 
  51.      StartUp  group of Program Manager to create an  icon.  (WrapUp 
  52.      also  works with other popular Windows shells, such as  Norton 
  53.      Desktop.)

  55.      2. Create a group window called ShutDown. If you want a  name 
  56.      other  than ShutDown, you may do so by adding that group  name 
  57.      as  a parameter to wrapup.exe. For example, you might use  the 
  58.      command line:  wrapup.exe /G"My WrapUp Group."
  59.      
  60.      3. Create an icon or icons in the ShutDown group for each task 
  61.      you  wish  to run automatically, just as you  would  with  the 
  62.      StartUp group.

  64. Once  you  restart  Windows,  do whatever you  do,  and  then  exit 
  65. Windows, you'll see WrapUp leap into action. After the normal "Are 
  66. you  sure you want to exit Windows?" messages, WrapUp asks  if  you 
  67. want  to  execute  the programs in your ShutDown  group.  You  can 
  68. answer  Yes  to do this, No to exit Windows without  executing  any 
  69. more programs, or Cancel to abort the exiting process. You have an 
  70. option  to  prevent this dialog box from appearing by using  an  /N 
  71. switch for No Dialog Box, as in wrapup.exe /N.

  73. If you answer Yes (or run WrapUp in /N mode), all programs in  your 
  74. ShutDown group are launched. When they are finished and you wish to 
  75. exit Windows normally, WrapUp allows the exit to proceed as usual.
