Subject: Business CD Market
To: CDPub@knex.via.mind.ORG
Where has there been published a breakdown by market-sector (i.e.,
general publishers, medical & scientific imaging specialists, etc.)
of businesses who produce optical-media product?
Also, does anybody know of published market-data which may reflect
typical selling-prices for CDROM discs (OTHER THAN application soft-
ware and such things as games, targeted only for retail markets)?
Thiugh I would prefer citations of published reports, I would welcome
anecdotal information as well.
If possible, please respond via email. Thanks!

The original article posted was indeed from the list, so I don't think
he was wanting to know how to subscribe to CDPub!
As the subject matter says, he was referring to the Usenet newsgroups
comp.cdrom.pub.*
Is such a thing as gatewaying regular usenet newsgroups to mailing
lists? I know that some mailing lists gets gatewayed to alt newsgroups -
e.g. CDROM-L is alt.cd-rom. But I have heard that such things are
frowned upon where mainstream newsgroups like comp.* are concerned.
For people who do get the comp.cdrom.pub newsgroups, here is the question.
How is the traffic? And the nature of discussions??

I am forwarding you a recent guide to Internet services that I have.
There are a couple of places that provide Usenet newsreading via
telnet. Scan the text below for "Usenet".
Have fun,
Brad

There is only one multisession at the physical, i.e. "orange book" lay, layer.
As has been pointed out by several people, there is not yet a standard file
structure for multisession. It is a software issue, not a drive issue.
ISO/IEC DIS 13490, the vote on which closes 11 September 1993, was intended
to establish such a standard, however, it is not possible to implement the
proposed standard as written so it is difficult to determine when such a
standard will be ready.
A revision to ISO 9660 to handle multisession could be achieved by mid to
late next year, if the correct people are involved.

Subject: Warning...Multisession disc
To: CDPub@knex.via.mind.org (CDPub)
Here come some messy details...
I have a CDD 521 (Kodak version, contains the barcode stuff) sitting on
my desk and assure you that at least one other drive can read multiple
sessions - I've used a Toshiba 3401.
I'm not familiar with the CD-GEN software, but I imagine that what its
doing is writing each session as a separate "logical" volume i.e. each
session is entirely self-contained and only refers to data recorded in
that session.
With Photo CD, data is not only physically added, but is also added
logically. Under DOS and OS/2 (and probably just about anywhere else
there is a file system driver) the device driver must get the starting
sector of the last session. It then remaps reads of the volume descriptor
sequence to come from that last session.
For example suppose we insert a disc with three sessions. Session 1
starts at sector 0 (this is true for all discs). Session 2 starts at
sector 5000 and session three starts at sector 9000. The FSD comes down
and wants to read sector 16, typically the Primary Volume Descriptor
(PVD). The device driver detects that there is a new disc in the drive
and gets various kinds of information including the starting sector of
the last session and the length of the volume descriptor sequence in the
last session (with photo CD you can cheat and really just remap sector 16
- there is only a PVD, no real need to remap the terminating volume
descriptor). After doing this it goes on to process the read request.
The driver sees that it needs to remap the request so it adds the address
of the last session to the read and actually reads sector 9016. This new
PVD will point to a root directory and path tables written in the last
session (any change in the file system, even just adding a new file at
the bottom of the directory tree will cascade up and cause a new root
directory and new path table). Other than remapping the VDS nothing else
special is needed.
Doug>> "I still find it hard to accept that a driver can't be written to
follow the pointers of one physical session to the next on a disc which
is created by the Philips recorder."
While the CDD 521 does allow you to get the starting address of each
session, other drives such as the 3401 do not. The 3401 only allows for
getting the starting address of the last session.

To: CDPub@knex.via.mind.ORG
I use the CD-GEN premastering and mastering software to create discs on
the Philips CDD521 Recorder and recently I discovered that multisession
discs that I have created cannot be read by any other reader on the market
except the CDD521 Recorder/Reader itself. Apparently the new breed of
multisession Kodak Photo CD compliant readers emerging everywhere on the
market today, eg. Sony CDU31A will not read and CANNOT be made to read
true multisession discs, i.e, where each session is a separate CD-ROM
image with its own lead-in, data section, lead-out and TOC. As I
understand it, the Kodak multisession format is such that all of the CD's
contents are accessible, as if a single session, even though its contents
have been created as a series of updates to the disc, hence their term,
multisession Photo CD.
Perhaps an enlightened techy would like to provide all the messy details
on this subject. I know I'd like to read it. I still find it hard to
accept that a driver can't be written to follow the pointers of one
physical session to the next on a disc which is created by the Philips
recorder.

Well, this is an important point, to say the least. We are on the verge of
purchasing a CDR maker, and never got the hint from anywhere else that
there are two different kinds of "mulitsession", and totally incompatible
to boot. Could someone please confirm or deny the existence of this new
migrane with some certainty.
Sorry to waste bandwidth asking for an expeditious response, but my sanity
obviously hangs in the balance.

Hmm. This is what I'm also being told about any multi-session CD except
PhotoCD.
So can anyone tell me what is the use of having the capability to write
multi-session discs if no CD-ROM drives out there can read them? (even the
newer double-speed drives that are called "multi-session" capable drives?)
Is the answer that we're just waiting for driver software to read the
aforesaid? I desperately need to read multi-session CDs on the Mac
platform in my case.

First off, each session on _any_ multisession disc, including Photo CD,
has by definition "its own lead-in, data section, lead-out and TOC." That's
what "session" means. This is _physical_ level stuff: i.e., it's defined by the
Orange Book. I suspect that the confusion lies at the _logical_, i.e.
ISO 9660 level. The problem is that there is no standard way of doing
multisession ISO 9660 discs. (This may change if ISO 9660 is revised. The
first meeting on that subject is scheduled for November.) A Kodak Photo CD's
sessions are additive: the directory in the last session includes the files
in every other session. So the whole disc is a single logical entity. Other
vendors use a multisession scheme where each session contains a complete
ISO 9660 file system which is independent of the file system in any other
session. This isn't "wrong". (Remember, there's no standard.) It's just
different from Kodak's scheme.
The CD-ROM drive doesn't know anything about ISO 9660 structures. It just
knows about the physical level stuff: lead-in, lead-out, TOC, etc. It's the
file system code (MSCDEX on the PC) which knows about the ISO 9660 structures.
In order to read any kind of multisession disc, it's necessary to use file
system code which knows how to understand the multisession format which is
on the disc. I would think that the vendor of the premastering software
would provide his own version of MSCDEX, or a TSR interceptor for MSCDEX,
to allow his multisession format discs to be read. (Of course, that won't
help you much if you're not on a PC!)

The way Photo CD works is the way consumers would expect it to work: when
you add more pictures to your disc, you see all the old pictures as well
as the new ones, and you don't have to know about sessions. Remember that
Photo CDs are designed to be played in a consumer player, as well as a
CD-ROM drive.
One other point: a session on a CD cannot be read by most CD-ROM drives unless
that session has been fixated. (That's when the lead-in and lead-out are
written.) But the writer CAN read a disc which hasn't been fixated. Are
you sure you fixated the disc?

I have used a -31A and multisession discs from Kodak, and they worked together.
Please ensure that you have the latest drivers from Sony Corporation.

Subject: What's the word on MiniDiscs?
To: CDPub@knex.via.mind.org
So many formats out there! Which ones will go the way
of Beta? I am curious about the Sony MiniDisc medium
which does not appear to be taking the public by
storm.
I am wondering how it will do in the computer industry,
especially compared to MO discs, which appear to be
gaining acceptance. Also how they will stack up next
to CDs and CD-R technology.
Anyone out there with thoughts or info on this technology,
please write. I have looked all over the Net, but can't find
out much about minidiscs.
Thanks in advance,
joe alvarez

Sony moves on data MiniDisc.
Sony is set to release a data version of its 2.5in MiniDisc,
which could revolutionise removable storage for PC and Mac. At
an expected price of around 10 and a capacity of 140Mb the new
disks, called MD Data, will provide 100 times the capacity of
existing high density floppies at only ten times the cost.
Although no products are available yet, in announcing standards
for MD Data, Sony is effectively stating its intention to sell
MD disks and drives in the future. The MD Data follows on from
MD Audio released in November of last year and uses
magnetooptical technology to provide read/write storage. MD Data
and MD Audio disks will not be interchangeable. MD Data data
transfer rate, at 150K per second, will be equivalent to
single-speed CD-ROM. The disks are expected to cost slightly
more than the current 8.99 for MD Audio and are reportedly
manufactured to higher tolerances. They will come in three
types: pre-mastered MD ROM, read/write MD and a hybrid
ROM-rewriteable. The hybrid combines ROM tracks with rewriteable
tracks. The MD Data file structure will be platform independent
and require the installation of Sony interface software; PC MD
Data disks will thus be interchangeable with Mac MD Data disks.
Shipping dates and prices have not yet been announced.
Perhaps someone from Sony would like to comment?

Perhaps these new formats are now in a state, the CD itself had when it
appeared. High player prices, not many titles...
MiniDisc is battling with the Philips DCC currently. According to a
recent Wall Street Journal article, Sony is reportedly ahead of Philips
and by coming with a portable player for a reasonable price, supposedly
has better retailer support than the DCC.
For MiniDisc to appear as a data storage device, it may first have to
prove itself in the consumer audio market a la CD-Rom. But there are
rumblings that Sony is going to introduce some data minidisc drives
real soon now.
I myself hope that the MiniDisc wins the war, due to its applications
for data storage, random access (even for audio applications) as opposed
to the DCC, which is a sequential tape device.
MiniDisc/DCC battle will probably be fought by Sony and Philips/Matsushita
and I hope that it won't go the way VHS/Beta went. :-)

Subject: Will CD-i get popular?
There was a story in Wall Street Journal about four companies
announcing a new video format based on the 5" CD. This video format
is supposed to be for movies, karaoke, music videos and educational
material. This format is called Video CD and the spec appears to be
that of Philips CD-i
The companies concerned are: Matsushita, Sony, JVC and Philips.
Players which can deal with this format will be: Video CD players,
Cd-I playersm, PCs with CD-Rom drives and audio CD players with
digital outputs and add-on video adapter. I suppose players from
3DO (Matsushita) will play Video CD too.
The CDs will have 74 minute capacity. Sony with its Columbia unit
and Matsushita with its MCA unit may start distributing movies
in this format and start pushing players....Sony supposedly will
release first VideoCD products by mid 1994.
The CD-i fmv quality has not been impressive (at least when compared
with Laserdisc and perhaps even VHS tape) and I am wondering if
this format will fly. Anyone have any additional information on these?
I wonder what will be required to play the Video CDs on PCs using
CD-Roms.
