  1.                      NOVELL NETWARE AND THE IBM AS/400
  2.  
  3. A few tweaks is all it takes to run concurrent NetWare and AS/4000 sessions
  4. on a Token Ring LAN
  5.  
  6. By using IBM's PC Support AS/4000 program, PC users can run a NetWare
  7. session at the same time as an AS/400 session.  To make it work, though,
  8. users must modify their CONFIG.SYS files prior to running the PC Support
  9. program.
  10.  
  11. The two main steps consist of adding several device drivers to your
  12. CONFIG.SYS file, then installing the PC Support program on your PC.  Two
  13. files are created when you run the installation routine:a CONFIG.PCS file
  14. and a STARTPCS.BAT file.  You'll need to obtain the appropriate
  15. configuration information from the AS/400 administrator in order to
  16. complete these steps.
  17.  
  18. GATHERING AS/400 INFORMATION
  19. Before you do anything, you need to get four pieces of information from the
  20. AS/400 administrator:
  21. -The remote network identifier
  22. -The remote control point name
  23. -The remote adapter address
  24. -The local adapter address
  25.  
  26. The first three come from the Advanced Program to Program Communications
  27. (APPC) Communication Controller Description screens; the last one comes
  28. from the Token Ring Line Description screens.  These screens are viewed on
  29. the AS/4000.
  30.  
  31. APPC CONTROLLER DESCRIPTION
  32. Figure 1 shows an example of the APPC Controller Description screens on the
  33. AS/400.  Three seperate screens are shown together in the figure.
  34.  
  35. Take a look at the values shown for the "Remote network identifier"
  36. (RMTNETID) and the "Remote control point name" (RMTCPNAME) on the second
  37. screen.  In the figure, they are the character strings "APPN" and "TOKEN".
  38. These values must match the RTLN parameters in your CONFIG.PCS file.  You
  39. will be prompted to enter these values when you run the PC Support
  40. installation program on your PC.  (This program creates the CONFIG.PCS
  41. file.)

  43. Note also the value displayed on the third APPC Controller Description
  44. screen for the "TRLAN remote adapter address" (ADP-TADR).  In the figure,
  45. this address is 400044440001.  You will need to specify the remote adapter
  46. adapter as a parameter for the DXMCOMOD.SYS driver in your CONFIG.SYS file.

  105. TOKEN RING LINE DESCRIPTION
  106. Figure 2 shows an example of the Token Ring Line Description screens on the
  107. AS/400.  You need to define your Token Ring Line Description on the AS/400
  108. if it's not already defined.

  110. As you can see in the figure, the value of the "Local adapter address"
  111. (ADPTADR) is 400003190001.  You will be prompted to enter this value when
  112. you install the PC Support program.  It must match the information
  113. parameter of the TRLI line specified in CONFIG.PCS.

  151. MODIFYING CONFIG.SYS
  152. Figure 3 lists a sample CONFIG.SYS file showing the modifications that must
  153. be made.  The device drivers come on the "LAN Support" diskette that
  154. accompanies each Token Ring adapter.  Your CONFIG.SYS must include all of
  155. the drivers shown.  The parameters that follow some of the drivers are
  156. explained below.  The "001" after the DXMAOMOD.SYS driver indicates that
  157. the Token Ring adapter installed in the PC is a Primary Adapter.

  159. The number after the DXMCOMOD.SYS driver (400044440001) is the "TRLAN
  160. remote adapter address" from the AS/400 APPC Controller Description screen. 
  161. This address will overide the default address encoded on your PC's Token
  162. Ring adapter.
  163.  
  164. The DXMTOMOD.SYS driver has five parameters, which are listed below:
  165. > ES=2 indicates how many additional SAPs (Service Access Points) can be
  166. requested by the NetBios Interface Device Driver when it implicity opens
  167. the Token Ring adapter.  Both NetWare and the PC Support program uses one
  168. SAP each, so you need at least SAPs to run these two concurrently.
  169. > EST=6 indicates the number of additional kink stations requested by the
  170. NetBios Interface Device Driver when it implicity opens the Token Ring
  171. adapter.
  172. > S=8 indicates the number of NetBios Interface sessions that may be
  173. defined.
  174. > C=18 indicates the number of NetBios Interface Commands (NCBs) that may
  175. be outstanding at one time.
  176. > DS=2048 indicates the size of the Token Ring adapter transmit buffers
  177. (DHBs) in bytes.

  179. Note that the above information applies only to version 1.2 ofg the AS/400
  180. Operating System.  With version 2.0 you don't need to specify any
  181. parameters following the DXMTOMOD.SYS driver.  (For more information on
  182. configuring the DXMTOMOD.SYS driver, consult your IBM Local Area Network
  183. Support Program documentation.)

  185. The "drives=" parameter for the ECYDDX.SYS driver indicates the number of
  186. drives to be allocated to shared folders.  This is a key value because, by
  187. default, eight driver (drives D through K) are allocated to shared folders. 
  188. If you don't change the default, NetWare drive F will be shifted to drive
  189. L.  By changing this value to "drives=2," only drives D and E are allocated
  190. to shared folders.  NetWare will be able to use from drive F on as it
  191. normally does.

  203. INSTALLING PC SUPPORT AS/400
  204. Next, you need to install the PC Support AS/400 application on a PC
  205. connected to a NetWare LAN via a Token Ring adapter. (PC Support software
  206. can run independent of a NetWare LAN).
  207.  
  208. Consult your "PC Support AS/400 User's guide" on how to run the INSTALL
  209. command.  The INSTALL routine creates a CONFIG.PCS file and places it in
  210. the subdirectory C:\PCS (or in another subdirectory if you so specify).
  211.  
  212. Figure 4 shows a sample CONFIG.PCS file.  You will be prompted for the
  213. RTYP, RTLN, and TRLI parameters  when you run the PC Support INSTALL
  214. program.  RTYP should always be "ITRN" for Token Ring Interface.  The two
  215. RTLN paqrameters should match the RMTNETID and RMTCPNAME values shown on
  216. the AS/400.  In our example, these "APPN" and "TOKEN".

  218. The "400003190001" parameter shown for TRLI is the AS/4000 Token Ring LIne
  219. address on the AS/400.  All PCs on the LAN should use this line address
  220. when they run a NetWare session.

  227. RUNNING THE PC SUPPORT PROGRAM
  228. A batch file STARTPCS.BAT is  created as part of the INSTALL process. (see
  229. Figure 5).
  230.  
  231. Since with NetWare we are using only two drives (drives D and E) dor AS/400
  232. shared folders, chheck your STARTPCS.BAT file and change any reference to
  233. Drive I to drive D or E.  (All such references in the sample batch file
  234. have been modified to drive E).
  235.  
  236. Once you've made these changes to your batch file, type "STARTPCS" at your
  237. PC to start the PC Support AS/400 program.  For more information on the
  238. STARTPCS.BAT file, consult your "PC Support AS/400 User's Guide".
