Novell Expands Availability of NetWare Connectivity Toolkit, NCPs and
Source Code Through NetWare Technology Licensing Program
PROVO, Utah--July 6, 1992--Novell today announced the NetWare Technology
Licensing Program to make its NetWare connectivity toolkit, NetWare Core
Protocols (NCPs) and NetWare source code more generally available to
interested developers. Previously, the connectivity toolkit and source
code were available through separate programs.
"The goal of this program is to give developers access to NetWare at all
levels," said Raymond J. Noorda, Novell's president and chief executive
officer. "This will help to grow the network computing market by speeding
the development of products that are tightly integrated with NetWare."
NetWare Connectivity Toolkit
The NetWare connectivity toolkit consists of documentation and software
programs that help developers provide new and innovative solutions to the
industry's largest installed base of network customers.
The toolkit is available two ways. The first option allows developers to
redistribute native NetWare client software, including IPX/SPX, with their
network applications and hardware products. This gives users products
that are easier to install and integrate into a NetWare network because
the task of installing the protocols is done by the developer, not the
customer.
The second option allows developers to obtain documentation and
source-code modules including IPX, SPX, NetBIOS, Service Advertising
Protocol (SAP), and NetWare Virtual Terminal (NVT). This option is for
third parties developing new networking solutions that use Novell's
protocol stacks.
NetWare Core Protocols
NCPs are a documented set of procedures used by NetWare to accept and
respond to requests by workstations on the network. Under the new
program, licensees can develop NCP compatible Service Requesters and/or
Service Providers. A Service Requester initiates requests for network
services while a Service Provider controls physical hardware resources and
provides network services to Service Requesters.
NetWare Source Code
NetWare source code has been available to interested developers since 1988
under the NetWare for Unix Systems program. NetWare for Unix Systems is
a source code product that provides NetWare services such as file, print,
communications, and messaging to customers using general-purpose operating
systems like Unix, VMS and MPE. NetWare for Unix Systems allows customers
to extend access from their business-critical applications running on Unix
or other general purpose operating systems to their desktop PCs.
Product Certification
Product certification is available from Novell Labs to confirm
interoperability with NetWare networks and compliance with Novell's
networking standards. Certification by Novell Labs assures customers that
approved products will perform as advertised and will not harm or
interrupt their existing network. For more information on product
certification, developers should call Novell Labs at (801) 429-5713.
Availability and Pricing
All of the licensing options are currently available. For pricing or more
information about the NetWare Technology Licensing Program, developers in
the U.S. and Canada should contact Novell Developer Relations in Austin,
Texas at (800) 733-9673. Developers outside the U.S. and Canada should
contact their local Novell sales office.
