Novell Introduces NetWare MHS v2.0
Messaging Server Gains Directory Synchronization, Third-Generation
Interface Support, and Other Enhancements
SAN JOSE, Calif -- August 3, 1992 -- Novell today announced a new version
of its popular DOS-based NetWare MHS messaging server. The enhanced
version answers customers requests for directory synchronization, support
for longer user names, enhanced asynchronous communications, and a better
administration interface. NetWare MHS v2.0 is a complete store-and-forward
messaging server designed to meet the needs of small businesses,
professional offices, workgroups and departments.
NetWare MHS v2.0 is fully compatible with NetWare Global Messaging, a
powerful multi-protocol messaging integration platform implemented as a
set of NetWare Loadable Modules on the NetWare v3.11 network operating
system. Customers will be able to use NetWare MHS v2.0 servers alone to
contruct reliable, flexible messaging systems for smaller, less complex
networks, or together with NetWare Global Messaging servers to build a
corporate-wide messaging infrastructure.
"An important part of the NetWare Messaging Environment, NetWare MHS is
the network messaging industry's most popular network messaging server
with more than 2,500,000 mailboxes and more application support than any
other network-based messaging system," said Carey Heckman, director of
messaging products marketing for Novell, Inc.
Like the NetWare Global Messaging server, NetWare MHS v2.0 can receive,
route, transport, and deliver ASCII or formatted text, database entries or
entire databases, executable program code, digitized voice or other sound,
and graphics data, supporting a wide array of messaging applications such
as workflow automation, electronic data interchange, electronic mail and
groupware.
NetWare MHS v2.0 new features include:
Directory synchronization: NetWare MHS v2.0 supports the same directory
synchronization as NetWare Global Messaging. The NetWare MHS v2.0
directory database is both distributed and replicated across multiple
servers, and is updated when participating servers send directory update
messages to each other. The updates can be triggered automatically or
manually, and can consist of a complete reconciliation of the database or
only changes that have occurred since the last update.
Third-generation NetWare SMF support: NetWare MHS v2.0 uses the NetWare
SMF v71 application programming interface (API). Now in its third
generation, NetWare SMF has added support for long names, hierarchical
naming schemes and directory synchronization. For backward compatibility
with older applications, NetWare MHS v2.0 also supports the
first-generation (NetWare SMF v64) and second-generation (NetWare SMF v70)
APIs. NetWare MHS v2.0 preserves the customer's current investment by
supporting any applications, utilities or gateways written to these
versions of NetWare SMF.
Administration interface: Incorporating the same user interface as
Novell's NetWare network operating systems to deliver a consistent
look-and-feel, NetWare MHS v2.0 provides an interactive administration
program which simplifies server configuration and maintenance.
Asynchronous communications support: Store-and-forward messaging requires
transmitting messages beyond the local area network to servers at remote
sites. The NetWare MHS v2.0 server's asynchronous communications features
include support for multiple transmission media, simplified modem
definition, public data network support, and communications through both
the link protocol supported by NetWare MHS v1.5 and the faster B+ link
protocol which uses sliding windows.
NetWare MHS v2.0 also takes advantage of the advanced data compression and
dynamic error detection and correction features offered by modern modems.
Sender validation and password validation provide improved security for
connections and message submissions. NetWare MHS v2.0 supports up to
sixteen asynchronous connections.
In addition to NetWare MHS v2.0, the NetWare Messaging Environment
includes Novell's NetWare Global Messaging server, a powerful
multi-protocol messaging integration platform implemented as a set of
NetWare Loadable Modules on the NetWare v3.11 network operating system,
NetWare MHS Standalone Edition (previously called Personal MHS) for
multi-user messaging with NetWare Lite and other DOS-based peer-to-peer
networks, NetWare Messaging CONNECT for interoperability between MHS and
SNADS environments, and more than 140 compatible third-party commercial
applications and gateways.
Pricing and Availability
NetWare MHS v2.0 will be available by mid October, 1992. NetWare MHS v2.0
will be sold through Novell authorized resellers. The suggested list
price is (U.S. Dollars) $295 for 10 users, $695 for 50 users, $995 for 100
users, and $1,595 for 250 users. Each user is a message box where NetWare
MHS v2.0 directly delivers messages. For pricing outside of North America
and Canada, customers should contact their local Novell authorized
resellers. For information regarding upgrades, contact 1-800-NETWARE.
